The Chronicle October 2014 United Church of Christ (Congregational) 46 Stam Street, Williams Bay, WI 53191 Dear Friends in Faith In April of 2010, I was elected to serve on the Southeast Association Church & Ministry Team (C&M). The C&M is a group of clergy and laity of the Southeast Association of the WI Conference –UCC who are responsible for authorizing and overseeing ministry and for the care and well being of our churches and clergy. The range of the C&M ‘s work includes: • Working with Members in Discernment on their journey towards ordination, commissioning, licensure, or other service in the church. • Planning Installation and Ordination services for clergy and churches. • Performing Fitness Reviews for clergy who may have committed an ethical violation. • Performing Situational Support Consultations for clergy and/or churches who are experiencing difficulty in their ministry together Among other items. It is important ministry on behalf of the wider United Church of Christ. Since October of 2011 I have been the chair of the SEA C&M Team. In that position I have had the joy of working with our Interim Associate Conference Minister for the Support of Pastors & Care of Churches for the Southeast and Southwest Associations – The Rev. Dr. Kent Ulery. Kent's role is to work with Church and Ministry committees in both Associations; coordinate pastoral response to both clergy and congregations; and to be the lead staff for Search and Call work when there are pastoral vacancies. As a member of the Conference staff, Kent also has a variety of duties one is to be available to preach in churches in response to requests and as his schedule allows. Before coming to WI Conference Kent was the President and Professor of Pastoral Leadership at Bangor Theological Seminary, one of the 7 closely-related seminaries of the UCC. Prior to that, Kent was the Conference Minister of the Michigan Conference. He has also served local church pastorates in Midland, MI, East Peoria, IL, and Vera Cruz/Decatur, IN. He is a graduate of DePauw University (B.A.), Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and McCormick Theological Seminary (D.Min.). Inside this issue: Kent authored the book entitled No Longer at Ease: Revelation's Seven Churches and 1-Minister’s Letter the Empire which explores the biblical Book of Revelation and the Seven Churches that 2-Lectionary play an important role in the themes of that portion of scripture. Kent is married to Meg, 2-Prayers they live in Arlington Heights, IL and enjoy their grandchildren. 2-Birthdays & Anniversaries 3-Annual Budget Meeting Knowing that Kent is available to preach in churches in response to requests, and after 3-Spiritual Life three years of working together on C&M, I have asked Kent to join me in our pulpit here 3-Thank You! n UCC- WB. We begin this update with a “snapshot” of our 2014 Year-To-Date (YTD) expenses and receipts through August 31, 2014. Our YTD expense are $83,209 and our receipts are $81,260, resulting in a deficit of $1,949 through August 31. Thanks to the vigilance of the committees and congregants expenses are actually almost $2,800 below what we budgeted for in 2014. The receipt side of the ledger reflects the faithful manner in which we fulfill our Faith Promises, the generosity of the non-promised giving by those members, guests, and visitors who do not make Faith Promises, and the success of our fund raising efforts – thank you to all who were involved most recently in our Art By the Bay and Rummage Sale events this summer! The Committee is grateful for your generous giving so far this year, especially to those who have already responded by being “Happy to Help”. However, while expenses are less than we budgeted for and promised giving is right on target for the year, as in years past the Committee anticipates a shortfall of several thousand dollars in balancing our budget by the end of the year. The Committee’s charge is to keep our beloved church on solid financial ground, so it is time once again for our annual appeal to consider augmenting your Faith Promise or non-promised giving. You should be receiving your third quarter statements shortly. As you review them, please give prayerful consideration to making an additional gift to help cover the operational expenses required for the church’s local ministry and our wider mission, and use the Happy to Help envelopes provided in the back of the pews to designate your special offering. Again thank you for your generous gifts and your faithful giving. The Search Committee has completed its year-long effort and recommended a candidate to the Board of Directors at its September meeting. The Board affirmed this recommendation and is pleased to nominate The Reverend Franz S. Rigert for Conference Minister. Reverend Rigert brings great skills in leading transformative change in a collaborative and considerate manner. As one of his references stated, "Franz exhibits a strong, collaborative leadership style. He sets the course, inspires others to join and still embraces all visions and differences.” Visionary and compassionate, Franz is spiritually grounded in the United Church of Christ and committed to the health and welfare of our beloved Conference. He is a most faithful, gifted and creative pastor who has served the Conference well in both the local church and community, and in the wider church. Since 1995 Franz has served as pastor of Pilgrim UCC in Grafton, during which time the congregation more than doubled in active members. A congregation member commented, "Franz has a rare ability to address tough congregational life and development issues while embracing multi-diverse perspectives and keeping people together and moving forward. He has a tireless ability to be everywhere at once, yet 'present' and an ability to connect deeply on an interpersonal level." Franz holds a Master of Divinity degree from Garret-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. Please read his bio for additional information. You are invited to meet Franz in October at one of these open houses around the Conference: October 4, 2014 11:00 – 12:00 Salem UCC, Verona October 4, 2014 2:00 – 3:00 Waukesha Evangelical and Reformed October 11, 2014 11:00 – 12:00 First Congregational UCC, Sheboygan October 18, 2014 11:00 – 12:00 Moon Beach Camp, St. Germain October 18, 2014 4:00 – 5:00 First Congregational UCC, Eau Claire There’s no need to RSVP for these events. We are eager for you to attend a session and get to know Franz. A special meeting of the Wisconsin Conference is being called on Saturday, November 1 at 11:00a.m. for the election, to be held at First Congregational UCC in Wisconsin Rapids. All church delegates and clergy are asked to attend this important meeting in our common life as we engage Rev. Rigert in discerning our future together. Churches should follow the same guidelines for number of delegates that apply for Annual Meeting (two delegates per church plus an additional delegate for each 500 members over 499). We ask that all attending please register online through the Conference web site at wcucc.org. God is already alive in our bright path to the future. God is still speaking! We invite you to pray, sing, work, and walk together in our mutual journey. Blessings to all, Steve Hirby, Chair of the Wisconsin Conference Board of Directors Rev.
