COELIAC AUSTRALIA SEED FUNDING
GUIDELINES FOR APPLICANTS
COELIAC AUSTRALIA – INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Coeliac Australia (CA) is a national not-for-profit association, comprising five state organisations
supporting people with coeliac disease. Coeliac Australia provides a framework for the states to
work together, share resources and fulfil its vision - To enhance the quality of life of people with
coeliac disease and those medically diagnosed as requiring a gluten free diet for life and to support
research towards a cure or other ethical forms of treatment.
Seed funding is intended to support preliminary research projects that will be developed into larger
scale projects for which funding will be sought from an external funding source or partnership.
Research is a core activity for CA. CA seeks to support innovative research projects that may lead to
improvements in our understanding of coeliac disease, its diagnosis, its clinical manifestations, its
complications, its therapy and its pathogenesis.
CA has a commitment to achieving the best possible clinical outcomes through high quality basic and
clinical research. CA supports three research areas as listed below; they are relevant to three
population groups at different stages of the coeliac disease journey:
1. Those diagnosed with coeliac disease
a. To cure coeliac disease
b. To improve current diet therapy
c. To improve coeliac disease management, including better control of associated
conditions and complications
2. Those who have coeliac disease but are not diagnosed
a. To improve health professional awareness of coeliac disease
b. To improve diagnostic tests and pathways
c. To define disease prevalence and the health burden of coeliac disease
3. Those at risk of developing coeliac disease
a. Ability to predict susceptibility
b. Prevention of coeliac disease
