PREP NEWS THE WEEKLY BULLETIN OF TRINITY GRAMMAR SCHOOL PREPARATORY SCHOOL MICHAELMAS TERM | BULLETIN I FRIDAY 10TH OCTOBER 2014 FROM THE MASTER OF THE PREPARATORY SCHOOL And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:9 – 11 Welcome back after what I hope has been an enjoyable holiday break. Term 4 is always busy with lots of activities. I encourage you to keep your eyes on the calendar and Record Book to make a note of significant events and dates. In particular, I draw your attention to the end of year dates. The Years 3 – 6 Annual Prizegiving and Speech Day Ceremony will be held on Thursday 4th December at 2:30pm at Summer Hill. This is a new time slot for this ceremony. Boys do not come to Strathfield on this day. All boys in Years 3 – 6 report to Summer Hill at 1:30pm. This event is compulsory for all boys in Years 3 – 6. Boys in K – Year 2 finish their year with the Final Assembly and Chapel Service on Wednesday 3rd December. Boys arrive at School at the appointed time and leave at the end of their assembly with their parents. There is no school for the boys after the assemblies and morning tea, which finish at approximately 11:00am. This week we welcomed back Miss Brown from long service leave. We hope that she enjoyed some relaxing and refreshing time travelling and spending time with family and friends. We also welcome Mrs Emma Macrae back to the Preparatory School for Term 4. Mrs Macrae has been on a period of maternity leave following a stint at the Summer Hill campus after her last maternity leave. Mrs Macrae re-joins the Music department and will work on Monday and Wednesday. Mrs Knight will work Tuesday and Friday and Ms Smeulders will continue on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. For any enquiries regarding Music, please contact Ms Smeulders (nsmeulders@trinity.nsw.edu.au). Ms Sinory Nheng began this week as my interim Personal assistant replacing Mrs Calautti. Ms Nheng will be with us next week prior to the permanent replacement commencing on Monday 20th October. We welcome Ms Nheng to the Preparatory School. She can be contacted on Mrs Calautti’s email address fcalautti@ trinity.nsw.edu.au On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, the Preparatory School and Junior School staff members were fortunate to be involved in Professional Development and planning activities on the incoming new Mathematics and Science curriculums that need to be implemented from the beginning of 2015. As a school, we need to take the curriculums and build them into the PYP framework. This is quite a process and I thank the staff for their dedication and commitment to this task. On Thursday, I represented the Preparatory School at the Middle and Senior School Speech Days at the Town Hall. It was most pleasing to note the number of former Preparatory School boys who received recognition for their achievements in 2014. Of particular note was the performance in Year 12, where 18 former Prep boys received an award including the Dux of the School (HSC Candidature), David Ibrahim. In addition, The Year 11 Dux (IB Candidature) was Alexander Connolly, the Year 10 Dux was Michael Pahos, and the Year 7 co-duces were Nick Bouletos and Isaiah Tambyrajah, were all former Preparatory School boys. Alexander Connolly was announced as a School Vice-Captain and it was also pleasing to see the Middle School Report so confidently delivered by former Prep student Samuel Otton. As you would be aware, the School has been involved in a trial of Google HP Chromebooks with Year 6 this term. As a result, it has been determined that we will move down the path of incorporating Chromebooks across Years 3 – 9. This will begin from this term with Year 3 and 4 classes being provided with enough Chromebooks for one to one access in each classroom. These 1300 788 477 TGS MULTI-CAMPUS INFO LINE WET WEATHER DETAILS | SPECIAL EVENTS | CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES | SPORT INFORMATION devices will remain at school with boys having access to the devices throughout the day as directed by their classroom teachers. From 2015, all boys in Years 5 – 7 will be required to provide their own Chromebook in the initial delivery of a one to one programme. These Chromebooks will be specified by the School and parents will purchase the devices via an online portal created through the School at a cost of approximately $300 per device. The devices will be used at home and at school to assist and enhance learning activities and opportunities. Two Parent Information sessions have been organised for all parents currently with a boy in Years 4, 5 and 6 next week to further explain the programme and to talk about the process of ordering the devices. One will be held in the Junior School on Monday evening and the second will be held in the Prep School Chapel on Tuesday evening. These sessions will both begin at 6:00pm. Parents of boys in Year 6 have already had one opportunity to hear about Chromebooks at the Exhibition information evening last term and this night will add to that information. I encourage all parents in these year groups to attend one of these sessions. all parents and a summary appears below. These changes have been necessitated by the changes to supervision as a result of outsourcing Out of Hours Care. Previously, supervision had been provided by our own Before School Care staff. However, under the NQF guidelines staff employed by the Out of Hours Care provider can only supervise students signed into the authorised service. I thank families for their understanding in regards to these changes. Summer Sport begins this Saturday and this will be the first opportunity for the Year 4 boys to be involved in the summer programmes. I remind all boys that they need to ensure that they are in the correct sports uniform for their games to represent the School. Non Trinity items of clothing are not to be worn at any time. This is a further reminder to all parents about some minor changes to the before school arrangements in regards supervision. The details of these changes have been emailed to Martin Lubrano | The Master of the Preparatory School Please ensure that all portfolios have been returned so that staff can start preparation for the final portfolio which comes home at the end of term. I encourage any parent who would like to discuss the progress of their son to make contact with the classroom teacher to set up an appointment. This session will introduce parents to these core strengths as part of a “mindfulness” parenting approach to adolescent boys. Of these core strengths, a key focus will be on “self-regulation.” Self-regulation is often equated to self-discipline and is extensively researched in Australian youth psychoeducation. Parenting strategies that empower self-regulation can improve your son’s selfdiscipline and the development of independent learning. In addition, we will also look at boys’ “stress response system” and its optimal development involving repetitive exposure to controllable challenges. Moderating predictable stress in a responsive controllable environment leads to the strengthening of resilience in our adolescent boys. WHAT IS TRIPLE P? The Triple P-Positive Parenting Programme is a multi-level, parenting and family support strategy. Triple P aims to prevent behavioural, emotional and developmental problems in children by enhancing the knowledge, skills and confidence of parents. TRIPLE P PRESENTER? Mr Peter Tryon is a former School counsellor at Trinity and is currently one of the leading Triple P presenters in Australia. IS THE SEMINAR APPROPRIATE FOR ALL PARENTS? Yes. Even though the focus is on adolescent boys, all parents of boys in Primary through to Year 12 are invited. IS THERE A COST AND HOW DO I RSVP? There is a small charge of $5. To RSVP and make your payment for this session, please click here. HOW DO I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE TRIPLE P PROGRAMME? Please refer to the Triple P website at http://www.triplep.net You can also contact our TESS Department on 9581 6035 for more information. FINALLY … As one of the only evidence-based parenting programs available, with over 30 years of proven clinical research to back it up, we are sure this Triple P session can be of valuable assistance to many Trinity parents and families. We hope you consider taking up this opportunity as part of Pastoral Care Week. 6 > Prep School News | 19 September 2014 www.trinity.nsw.edu.au www.trinity.nsw.edu.au SUMMER SPORT - Saturday, 11 October 2014 IF YOUR SON IS SICK OR UNABLE TO ATTEND, PLEASE RING 0414 747 396 BEFORE 7:30 AM If there is wet weather leading up to, or on, the day, boys should ring the Wet Weather Number 1300 788 477 AFTER 7:15 am.
