WEST ALABAMA TIGERS (3-2, 0-1 GSC)
THE GAME
After suffering a 58-20 defeat to No. 11 Delta State last Thursday, Florida Tech travels to Livingston, Alabama to do battle with the West Alabama Tigers at Tiger Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Mark Cato has quickly shown he’s one of the top passers in the
Gulf South Conference. The redshirt freshman has tallied 1,313 yards and 14 touchdowns passing on
the year, ranking second and first in the GSC, respectively. Xavier Milton leads the GSC in receiving
yards with 512, while Aaron George is tied for the GSC lead in receiving touchdowns with seven.
Trevor Sand is the GSC’s leading rusher with 415 yards. Linebacker Chris Stapleton tops the conference in total tackles with 36, while cornerback Manny Abad’s nine pass breakups are most of anyone
in the conference.
West Alabama enters the game coming off its first loss to a DII opponent this season after
falling to No. 21 West Georgia, 26-17. The Tigers boast the second-best rushing attack in the GSC,
averaging 263.0 yards per game on the ground. The conference’s top pass rushing group resides in
Livingston as UWA leads the GSC with 18 sacks on the year.
In last season’s contest, the Tigers thoroughly controlled the game, leaving Melbourne with
a 45-3 victory. UWA racked up 637 yards of total offense in the game, while holding the first-year
Panthers to just 299 total yards.
COACH ENGLEHART’S THOUGHTS
“This is a big test, it’s a nice long trip. We haven’t had a long bus trip like this yet this season.
That in and of itself is a challenge. We haven’t played there before so it’ll be something new for our
guys. Besides that, they’re a good football team. They were very good last year and have shown that
they can be as good this year. Their defense flies around and they have big play potential on offense.
Their quarterback has been a staple in this conference for a couple of years now, he makes a lot of
plays with his feet and gets the ball down the field. The biggest challenge for us is going to be lining
up against all of their formations. There are a lot of different things that our defense is going to have
to be ready for. We’re looking forward to playing them again.”

THE CAPTAINS
Florida Tech will be represented this season by two returning captains
in Collin O’Neal and Ramsey Sellers. Chris Stapleton was selected a new
captain by his teammates. The fourth captain will be announced Friday
night.
FAR FROM HOME
The trip from Melbourne to Livingston is the longest bus trip ever
taken by the Panthers at 650 miles. Previously, the longest trip lasted 502
miles, as Florida Tech traveled to Newberry, South Carolina to face Newberry College last season.
PANTHERS BY THE NUMBERS
FIT has a number of players putting up big numbers this season. The
Panthers garner the Gulf South Conference’s leading rusher in Trevor Sand,
who has tallied 415 yards on the ground this season. The Seminole, Florida
native is also tied for second in the conference in rushing scores with four.
Xavier Milton tops the GSC in receiving yards with 512, while Aaron George
is currently tied for the conference lead with seven touchdown catches.
Quarterback Mark Cato’s 1,313 passing yards rank second in the GSC. The
redshirt freshman leads the Gulf South in passing touchdowns with 14.
On defense, linebacker Chris Stapleton tops the conference in tackles
with 36. Cornerback Manny Abad has the most pass breakups of any GSC
defender with nine, while his two interceptions is tied for second in the
conference.
The Panthers team statistics matchup well in the conference as well.
FIT is currently second in passing and total yards offensively with 301.4 and
467.6, respectively. The Panthers also rank second in the GSC in red zone
offense, scoring 89.5 percent of the time.
There are also a few areas where FIT’s statistics lack from a conference
standpoint. Despite having the conference’s leading rusher, the Panthers
rank last in the GSC in rushing offense, recording just 166.2 yards per
game. FIT also gives up an average of 28.2 points per game, most of any
GSC member. The Panthers’ 1.60 sacks per game and 2.40 sacks allowed
per game are also the lowest marks in the conference. While FIT’s offense
flourishes in the red zone, the Panther defense has struggled this season,
surrendering points a GSC-high 78.6 percent of the time.
LOOKING TO TURN THE TIDE
Florida Tech has had a rough go of things through its first seven Gulf
South Conference games. The Panthers currently hold a 1-6 (.143) record in
GSC games. FIT has been outscored by a total of 314-134 over the course
of its first seven conference games. With a squad that seems markedly
improved from a year ago, the Panthers will look to get things turned back
in a positive direction against the Tigers.
ROAD GAME WOES
When it comes to games played away from Pirate Stadium in Melbourne, Florida, Florida Tech has struggled during its first two years of
football competition.
The Panthers hold a 2-6 (.250) record in away games over the past two
seasons. FIT garnered its first road victory in team-history in last season’s
finale, defeating Alderson Broaddus in the ECAC Division II Futures Bowl in
Phillipi, West Virginia. The Panthers kicked off the 2014 season with their
second road victory in team history, topping Division I FCS opponent Stetson 54-12 in DeLand, Florida.
The Panthers have seen much greater success at home and in contests
played at neutral sites. FIT is currently 5-3 (.625) in home games and 1-0
(1.000) in neutral games all-time. This season has seen the Panthers go 1-1
at Pirate Stadium. FIT overpowered Ave Maria in the home opener, 42-6,
but then dropped last week’s game against No. 11 Delta State, 58-20. Earlier this season, FIT earned its first victory at a neutral site when the Panthers
recorded their first-ever win over a ranked opponent, taking down No. 12
Tarleton State at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

MILTON ON A MISSION
Redshirt senior wide out Xavier Milton has been on a tear to start the
the 2014 season. The Alameda, California native has surpassed the century
mark in four of the Panthers’ five games this season, including threestraight.
On the season, Milton has notched 512 yards and four touchdowns
receiving. In his two years with Florida Tech, the former Laney College
standout has recorded 1,450 receiving yards and 15 scores, both of which
are FIT records.
Milton was named to the 2013 Don Hansen NCAA DII All-Super
Region Two Team following his tremendous first season in Crimson and
Gray. Additionally, Milton received All-Gulf South Conference honors after
leading the conference in receptions per game with 11.2.

he joins junior tight end Gabe Hughes.
Alba played in 12 games as a freshman in 2012 and 11 as a sophomore in 2013. Surprisingly, he played only one season of high school
football partially due to injury.
Alba is from Pembroke Pines, Florida, while Hughes is from Lighthouse Point. Although he was bitten by the injury bug for a significant
part of 2013, Hughes was impressive. Standing at six-foot, four-inches
and 235 pounds, he caught nine passes for 186 yards and one touchdown.
SOLID PRESEASON CONFERENCE RECOGNITION...
Six Panthers earned Preseason All-Gulf South Conference recognition in wide receiver Xavier Milton, tight end Gabe Hughes, offensive
lineman Stephen Castin, linebackers Justin Arcune and Chris Stapleton,
and defensive back Manny Abad.
The Panthers’ six tied for the second-most honorees in the GSC.
Three Panthers were also named to the all-newcomer team, in running back Gary Holmes, wide receiver Terrance Bynum and defensive
back Leo Alba II.

Manny Abad has made a habit of leading Florida Tech’s football team
in community service hours in his first two years as a Panther. In July, he was
listed as a nominee for the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, viewed
as one of the most coveted and prestigious off-the-field honors in college
football.
Abad, a redshirt sophomore defensive back, was the only nominee from
a Gulf South Conference school. He is among 92 nominees in the award’s
combined divisions category, which includes student-athletes from the Football Championship Subdivision, NCAA Division II, Division III and the NAIA.
He is also one of five nominees from a Florida school. The other
nominees from the Sunshine State include UCF’s Joey Grant, Florida’s Mark
Herndon, Miami’s Dallas Crawford and USF’s Thor Jozwiak.
An all-GSC second-team selection last season, Abad has volunteered
over 56 hours in the community in two years. Most of his time has been spent
as a mentor at nearby University Park Elementary School, helping children
with homework, reading and talking to them about the importance of education. Along with his teammates, he has also put on camps for children at The
Scott Center for Autism Treatment.
Abad was one of 20 Panthers named to the GSC Commissioner’s Honor
Roll in February. At the time, he held the second-highest grade point average
on the team. He enters his junior year academically this fall with a 3.79 GPA as
an accounting major.

WATCH THE PANTHERS LIVE
FLORIDA TECH’S RECORD WHEN...
FIT’s first appearance on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app this season will be at home this Thursday, Oct. 2 as Delta State will travel to Palm Bay High School for the first time with kickoff scheduled
for 7 p.m. The Panthers’ game on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at West Georgia will also be broadcasted.
The Panthers appeared on TV twice in their inaugural season last fall. They hosted West Alabama
in their first-ever Gulf South Conference game on CBS Sports Network and then played West Georgia
on Halloween as part of the GSC-TV package.
GSC SOLIDIFIES ESPN DEAL
The Gulf South Conference’s television package has a new home for 2014 after the league
officially announced an exclusive agreement with ESPN to broadcast its GSC-TV content.
The agreement marks the fourth consecutive year that the GSC and ESPN have collaborated to bring GSC-TV to fans around the globe, but this year the parties signed their first-ever
exclusive agreement. ESPN3 and live access on WatchESPN will host every contest with no
blackout restrictions.
STARTS AT THE TOP
Florida Tech President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony J. Catanese has successfully
started football at two NCAA schools, Division I Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and FIT.
Catanese, now in his 12th year in Melbourne, has more than doubled the athletics landscape to 22 varsity sports since he arrived in 2002. He has added men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and
women’s track & field, football, and women’s lacrosse will officially begin play in spring 2015.
TO BE THE BEST, YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE BEST
The Gulf South Conference has produced 11 national championships in football. Three of
those titles have come in the last 10 years, including the 2012 NCAA Division II National Champion Valdosta State. The Blazers have won three national championships since 2004 and were
the runners-up in 2002.
North Alabama won the title three straight years from 1993-95 after finishing second in
1985. Delta State hoisted the trophy in 2000 and finished second in 2010.
HOME SWEET HOME
For the second year, FIT will play its home games at Palm Bay High School’s Pirate Stadium
in Melbourne. The 4,980-seat facility is comprised of synthetic turf. It features two press boxes,
one on the home side, or east stands, and a new box on the west side.
