C A N D L E S
It's still mild at the end of a September with little rain. Rowan berries are red already and hazel
nuts prolific, but trees slow to show their autumn tints. For once I'm picking ripe tomatoes in the
greenhouse. Hopefully, the bees have enough stores to see them through winter. I only took a few
pounds of honey from the strongest colony, but got punished for feeding the bees sugar wearing shorts!
Since the equinox nights seem to be drawing in faster, but it may be only the passing of another summer,
with time speeding up as I age, and possibly the disappointment of the vote in Scotland, that I thought
might galvanise radical change to a fairer society south of the border. The enthusiasm of youth and 85%
turnout was amazing, but they do already have PR for the Scottish Parliament.
Now Westminster, with its old Etonian echoes of lost empire, has voted for open ended commitment
to air strikes on IS in Iraq. This on the coat tails of the USA, with a cautious Obama pushed by the military
industrial complex and up-coming elections, having to show muscle and act aggressively. With Saudi
Arabia having armed IS with some of the weapons we sell to them, our Oil Sheik allies are now allegedly
on board a coalition, but continue to carry out their own be-headings, 64 this year. Very few of us in
the west understand the Sunni Shia schism in Islam, or the persecution of minorities, of tribes who have
lived peacefully together for centuries, and the brutal treatment of women. Palestinians and Kurds cry out for their own independent
states. Heads need to be banged together. Borders drawn up to suit Britain and France as colonial powers are no longer valid. Pouring
more fuel on the conflicts (WE ARE STILL AFTER THE OIL!) only fans the flames. Are these horror show be-headings any worse than
obliterating life from 33,000 feet? Never mind the deficit, there is always money to wage war!
I went up to Scotland, doing candle and puppet workshops, and enjoying a couple of little festivals with friends, at 'Doune
the rabbit hole 'near Stirling, and then at Non Stuff by Tinto, on the weekend before the referendum. Most folk I met there, mainly
musicians and artists, were romantically dreaming of a free Scotland Then, I doubt anyone would dare admit to a negative vote! On the
Sunday Mike Hastings and other musicians trekked up the bare 2200 foot Tinto hill with their instruments, and played tunes around the
Cairn at the top. I was busy with workshops then, but my aching knees wouldn't have made the climb anyhow. So I sweated it out in
the wood-fired Sauna to end another lovely event, where I missed out on a hugging workshop, but did hug a 'Greenpeace' polar bear!
Greenpeace is known as Purple Anarchy by T-pot who came with me, and was, as ever, drumming through the night.
We have now got new crop Yorkshire beeswax from John Whient. Demand for beeswax candles is still growing.. We were
asked recently to make beeswax candles and flares for use in a re-enactment of the christening of Edward VI at Hampton Court ,
part of the 500th anniversary celebration of the construction of Cardinal Wolseys palace. We had a
crew from BBC Bristol filming me dipping jute chord in the dark, which rather disrupted our morning,
with Rory and Sue spending more than an hour outside the workshop, while the crew went through a
number of takes. Six tapers were to wax together to make a torch around a pole, to resemble a sketch
of one being carried in Elizabethan times. I'd cut down some saplings for the purpose, but Bianca, the
producer, wasn't impressed and wanted poles dead straight and fit for a King, so it had to be broom
handles from the hardware shop. The ceremony takes place this month, and the documentary should
be screened next January . Mr. Turner, the much lauded film on the artist, which used our candles
for back-lighting, has been kept from general release until after the London Film Festival this month.
After a summer when most activity at the Globe Theatre takes place in the open air arena, the Sam
Wannamaker indoor Theatre resumes productions this month with 'Tis a pity she's a Whore' followed
by 'The Knight of the Burning Pestle' and 'The Changeling.' Meanwhile the Globe Theatre are touring
Hamlet to every country in the World some of it on a sailing ship.. It must be good to get away from
London, which seems to suck in all the assets from the rest of the UK and beyond, a bit like ancient
SUE WITH PROCESSIONAL
Rome or an enormous sponge!
TORCHES
This month there is a modest annual increase some of our candle prices, as costs increase, and we
try to keep the business in the black. We have ordered a limited number of conical candleholders made
by Mary Chappelhow, illustrated on page 5, which will take both standard and stumpie size candles, and will be available at the end of
the month. A customer suggested it would be helpful if we carried a list of retail outlets on our web-site and we'll look into it. Rory
has just returned from a much needed weeks break from candle and music making in Mallorca with his partner Joanne. She returned
from sunny climes wearing a ring. Let's congratulate them on their engagement!
