The Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity commonly called CHRIST CHURCH DUBLIN THE CATHEDRAL EUCHARIST SUNDAY 12 OCTOBER 2014 THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY 11.00 CELEBRANT: THE VERY REVD DPM DUNNE PREACHER: THE REVD CANON P COMERFORD SETTING: GIOVANNI DA PALESTRINA, (C.1525–1594), MISSA BREVIS SUNG BY THE CATHEDRAL CONSORT The Gathering of God’s People Please stand for the procession of choir and clergy and for the singing of the hymn Processional Hymn New every morning is the love Our wakening and uprising prove; Through sleep and darkness safety brought, Restored to life, and power, and thought. New mercies, each returning day, Hover around us while we pray; New perils past, new sins forgiven, New thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven. If on our daily course our mind Be set to hallow all we find, New treasures still, of countless price, God will provide for sacrifice. The trivial round, the common task, Would furnish all we ought to ask, Room to deny ourselves, a road To bring us daily nearer God. Only, O Lord, in thy dear love Fit us for perfect rest above; And help us this and every day To live more nearly as we pray. The Collect of the Day Almighty God, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you: Teach us to offer ourselves to your service, that here we may have your peace, and in the world to come may see you face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please sit Proclaiming and Receiving the Word The First Reading Isaiah 25: 1-9 25 O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you, I will praise your name; for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure. 2 For you have made the city a heap, the fortified city a ruin; the palace of aliens is a city no more, it will never be rebuilt. 3 Therefore strong peoples will glorify you; cities of ruthless nations will fear you. 4 For you have been a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the needy in their distress, a shelter from the rainstorm and a shade from the heat. When the blast of the ruthless was like a winter rainstorm, 5 the noise of aliens like heat in a dry place, you subdued the heat with the shade of clouds; the song of the ruthless was stilled. 6 On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear. 7 And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; 8 he will swallow up death for ever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. 9 It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Psalm Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing. He shall feed me in a green pasture: and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort. He shall convert my soul: and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness for his Name's sake. Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil: for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff comfort me. Thou shalt prepare a table before me against them that trouble me: thou hast anointed my head with oil and my cup shall be full. But thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. The Second Reading Philippians 4: 1-9 4 1Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. 2 I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.3Yes, and I ask you also, my loyal companion, help these women, for they have struggled beside me in the work of the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life. 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Please stand for the Gospel Procession as the Acclamation is sung by the choir The Gospel Reading Matthew 22: 1-14 Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St N. Response All turn to face the reader 22 Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: 2‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. 3He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. 4Again he sent other slaves, saying, “Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.” 5But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, 6while the rest seized his slaves, maltreated them, and killed them. 7The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. 8Then he said to his slaves, “The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.” 10Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11 ‘But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, 12and he said to him, “Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?” And he was speechless.13Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 14For many are called, but few are chosen.’ This is the gospel of the Lord Response The Sermon The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; please stand he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People All sit or kneel Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer Merciful Father accept these our prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. please stand The Peace The priest introduces the peace with these words Blessed are the peacemakers: they shall be called children of God. We meet in the name of Christ and share his peace. The priest says The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Those present may offer one another a sign of peace cf Matthew 5.19 Celebrating at the Lord’s Table Offertory Hymn during which a collection will be taken up O Thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray That all thy Church might be for ever one, Grant us at every Eucharist to say With longing heart and soul, ‘Thy will be done.’ Oh, may we all one Bread, one Body be, One through this Sacrament of unity. For all thy Church, O Lord, we intercede; Make thou our sad divisions soon to cease; Draw us the nearer each to each, we plead, By drawing all to thee, O Prince of Peace; Thus may we all one Bread, one Body be, One through this Sacrament of unity. We pray thee too for wanderers from thy fold; O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep, Back to the faith which saints believed of old, Back to the Church which still that faith doth keep: Soon may we all one Bread, one Body be, One through this Sacrament of unity. So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease, May we be one with all thy Church above, One with thy saints in one unbroken peace, One with thy saints in one unbounded love: More blessèd still, in peace and love to be One with the Trinity in Unity. Tune: Song 1 Orlando Gibbons (1583–1625) William H. Turton (1856–1938) The Taking of the Bread and Wine at the taking of the bread the priest says Blessed are you Lord, God of all creation, through your goodness we have this bread to offer which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life. Blessed be God for ever at the taking of the wine the priest says Blessed are you Lord, God of all creation, through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Blessed be God for ever The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. and also with you Lift up your hearts. we lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. it is right to give our thanks and praise. Father, almighty and everliving God, at all times and in all places it is right to give you thanks and praise: And so with all your people, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying: The choir sings Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, Father, All remain standing the creator and sustainer of all things; you made us in your own image, male and female you created us; even when we turned away from you, you never ceased to care for us, but in your love and mercy you freed us from the slavery of sin, giving your only begotten Son to become man and suffer death on the cross to redeem us: he made there the one complete and all-sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world: he instituted, and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. Holy Spirit, giver of life come upon us now May this bread and wine be to us the body and blood of our saviour Jesus Christ. On the night that he was betrayed he took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. The choir sings and all repeat each line Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us we are bold to say Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The priest breaks the consecrated bread for communion and says The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We being many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Communion Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, who has taken away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Just as I am, thou wilt receive, Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve: Because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am, though tossed about With many a conflict, many a doubt, Fightings within, and fears without, O Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am (thy love unknown Has broken every barrier down), Now to be thine, yea thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am, poor, wretched ,blind; Sight, riches, healing of the mind, Yea all I need, in thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am, of that free love The breadth, length, depth and height to prove, Here for a season, then above, O Lamb of God, I come. Tune: Saffron Walden Arthur Henry Brown (1830–1926) Charlotte Elliott (1789–1871) Communion Motet O nata lux de lumine, O Light of light, by love inclined, Jesu redemptor saeculi, Jesu, redeemer of mankind, Dignare clemens supplicum With loving-kindness deign to hear, Laudes precesque sumere. And deign to raise our souls from hell, Nos membra confer effici, Vouchsafe us when our race is run, Tui beati corporis. In thy fair Body to be one. Thomas Tallis (c. 1505–1585) 14th century Latin hymn The Great Silence The silence is broken by the post-communion prayer. Going Out as God’s People Prayer after Communion God our guide, you feed us with bread from heaven as you fed your people Israel. May we who have been inwardly nourished be ready to follow you all the days of our pilgrimage on earth, until we come to your kingdom in heaven. Amen. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. All say: May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Post-communion Hymn Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim, And publish abroad his wonderful Name: The name all-victorious of Jesus extol; His kingdom is glorious, and rules over all. God ruleth on high, almighty to save; And still he is nigh, his presence we have; The great congregation his triumph shall sing, Ascribing salvation to Jesus our King. Salvation to God, who sits on the throne! Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son; The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, Fall down on their faces and worship the Lamb. Then let us adore, and give him his right: All glory and power, all wisdom and might, All honour and blessing, with angels above, And thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love. Tune: Paderborn Paderborn Gesangbuch, 1765 Charles Wesley (1707–88) The Blessing & Dismissal The priest blesses the people with these words The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be with you and remain with you always.
