SMOLINSKI - Gail Denise Marie
Smolinski of Yorkton, beloved wife
of Paul died in Christ Jesus, on
October 1, 2014 at 62 years of
age. She was born in Winnipeg,
MB on April 29, 1952. She met
Paul while working as a car-hop at
the Redtop Drive-In Restaurant in
Winnipeg. They were later married
on June 11, 1971. Gail was a
wonderful mother to four children:
Christine, Benjamin and twins
Jessica and Jacqueline. She was
always supportive in their endeavors,
encouraging them to expand
their horizons and comfort zones.
She was always proud of her
children’s accomplishments and
encouraged independence. A passion
for natural heath medicine led
her to pursue years of studying
that resulted in over a dozen
designations and culminated in
September 2013, where she earned a
Doctorate in Natural Medicine. She
always got straight A’s, no matter
what she studied! She opened a
natural health clinic in 1999 and
called it An Ounce of Prevention Natural Health Center. As well, she
assisted in the family business, Kings Sport Leisure & Marine. She enjoyed
scrapbooking, often doing so long after everyone else went to bed! Gail
occasionally hunted, bringing home bear and deer for the family’s freezer.
She also was involved with the Yorkton Toastmasters Club and often did
public speaking to various groups in the Yorkton area. Gail was a very
warm-hearted person who always put others first, touching the lives of
everyone that knew her. She always had the passion to help others
spiritually, physically and mentally. She was a woman of unshakeable faith,
never missing an opportunity to share Christ. Even her license plate on
her car was “REPENT”! We rejoice with her as she goes on to eternal life
with Christ Jesus, where she’ll meet with daughter Christine who went on
ahead in 1997. She is survived by numerous relatives and many dear
friends. A visitation for family and friends was held on Sunday evening
from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family. Funeral Services were held
on Monday, October 6, 2014 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre
with Lincoln Gagnon of Miracle Temple Ministry officiating. Musical
selections were provided by Laurie Ann Cooper. Paul Smolinski shared a
tribute and words of inspiration. The interment followed in the Yorkton City
Cemetery with Nancy Allard, Diane Schellenberg, Joe Smolinski, Charlie
Smolinski, Ben Smolinski and Laurie Ann Cooper serving as the
pallbearers. Memorials honouring Gail’s life may be made to Saskatchewan
Abilities Council - Yorkton Branch, 162 Ball Rd. Yorkton, SK S0A 3N0.

LESON - Alexandra ‘Alice’ Leson,
formerly of Canora, SK, passed
away at the Yorkton and District
Nursing Home on Monday, October
6, 2014 at the age of 94 years.
Alice was born on March 25, 1920,
the third eldest of fourteen children
who were raised on a farm by their
parents, Stephen and Dokina
(Kudeba) Terlesky in the Burgis
district. Alice attended West Scalet
School. She married Mike Leson
on June 20, 1937 and together
they raised their nine children on
the original Leson homestead,
approximately four miles south of
Canora, SK. Alice was number one in
the profession of being an
exceptional wife, mother and pioneer
woman of her time, working hard
on the family farm from sunrise to
sunset, milking cows, feeding
chickens and pigs, tending an
enormous garden, hauling water,
washing clothes, ironing, cleaning,
sewing and making meals. On
occasion she could even be seen
driving the tractor or truck to help
Mike in the fields especially during harvest time. Her strength was
exemplary. Alice and Mike were members of and married at the Uspenska
Church (known as “the Church on the Hill”) and attended services there
throughout the years. Later after moving to Canora, Alice became a
member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity. In 1969, Mike
suffered a stroke. Alice became his primary caregiver as well as raised
their three teenage children. Finally in 1977, with no children remaining at
home, she and Mike moved to Canora, leaving the farming to their two
sons. Her love, devotion and strength were very evident as she cared for
Mike until his passing in 1984. Alice continued living by herself in Canora,
tending her small garden, planting flowers, making perogies (especially
cottage cheese perogies for her son, Norm and homemade doughnuts for
her grandson, Shannon), enjoying her numerous visits with her children,
their families and weekend visits with her daughter, Marie. A fond memory
of the grandchildren is when everyone crowded into her tiny apartment
to enjoy the twelve meatless dishes Baba prepared every Ukrainian
Christmas Eve. In 2006, at the age of 86, Alice moved to the Yorkton and
District Nursing Home where she continued to reside, until her peacefully
passing with family at her side. Alice leaves to mourn her two sons:
Wilfred (Adeline) and Norman (Debbie) of Canora, SK; her six daughters:
Marie of Yorkton, SK, Evelyn (Gerry) Greaves of Vancouver, BC, Karen
(Rick) Kanski of Winnipeg, MB, Linda (John) Lafantaisie of Winnipeg, MB,
Deborah (Timothy) Gibney of Woodstock, ON and Constance (Michel)
Leson-Carle of Stony Plain, AB; son-in-law, Gerald Ramstead of Yorkton,
SK; seven sisters: Elizabeth Wiwchar, Vera Hudema, Anne Hudema and
Jean Billy all residing in Yorkton, SK, Lillian Filipchuk of Saskatoon, SK,
Marge (Bill) Boychuk of Edmonton, AB and Iris (Matt) Ryczak of Yorkton,
SK; one brother, Mike Terlesky of Regina, SK and two sisters-in-law: Gerry
Terlesky of Saskatoon, SK and Aileen Terlesky of Atikokan, ON. She
also leaves to mourn her twenty-three grandchildren, thirty-two greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild as well as numerous nieces
and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents: Stephen and Dokina
Terlesky; her husband, Mike; daughter, Barbara Ramstead; son-in-law,
Paul Kaufmann; grandson, Tyson Kanski; brothers: George and infant
brother, Metro, John and William, sisters: Helen Terlesky (at age nine)
and Mary Berehula; and her brothers-in-law: Metro Berehula, Orest
Wiwchar, Mike Hudema, Dan Hudema, George Billy and Sam Filipchuk.
Relatives and friends were invited to Prayers held at Leson’s Funeral Home
on October 10, 2014 at 7:30 pm. Funeral services were held at the Ukrainian
Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, Canora on October 11, 2014 at
10:00 am with Rev. Fr. Michael Faryna officiating. Interment followed at
the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy
may make donations to the Yorkton and District Nursing Home or to a
Charity of Donor’s Choice as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Alice
Leson. Family and friends unable to attend are invited to sign an on-line
guest book for Alice at www.lesonsfuneralhome.ca. Arrangements were
entrusted to LESON’S FUNERAL HOME, Canora.

BOYCHUK - Metro Boychuk
passed away October 18, 2009.
A face we love is missing
A voice we love is still.
A place is vacant in our hearts,
That never can be filled.
You left us precious memories
Your love will be our guide
You live on through your family
You’re always by our side
It broke our hearts to lose you.
But you didn’t go alone
Cause part of us went with you

In Loving Memory
Gray, Christopher Harvey
May 2, 1974- October 19, 2013
No one could have predicted
the events of that fateful day a
year ago. So full of love and life.
Planning for our futures. A life
free of the animosity of the past.
You were moving forward to be
the best person you could ever
be. Away from the hatred. Like
a Pheonix from the ashes you
arose from the negativity. Into a
new future. I never told you just
how very proud of you I am. I
am so proud to have known you
when you learned your “roar”.
Oh Chris... I miss your smile. Your
hugs. Your laugh. Your tenderness
and kindness. Your silly, easy
going nature to always bring a
smile to my face. The way you
made me feel so complete. I
could never stay angry at you for
long. My best friend. My closest
companion. I needed you so much
longer here, but I guess God
needed you more in Heaven. I
loved you then. I love you now. I’ll
love you forever. You will forever
be in my heart and soul. I will see
you again. Until we meet again
my dreams and memories have to
be enough for now. Wait for me to
come to you... when it is my turn.
Until then, know I love you.

SNUG
THREE
BEDROOM BUNGALOW
This snug three-bedroom bungalow offers
one-level living with a
twist – an optional staircase is included in the
plans, should the owners
choose to put in a basement.
Entry is through a covered porch attached to a
veranda that spans the
front of the home. Once
in the foyer, a coat closet
is located directly ahead,
with the great-room complex to the right and the
sleeping wing to the left.
The great room, separated from the foyer by a
half wall, boasts a handsome tray ceiling, as well
as windows that look out
to the front garden. A gas
fireplace will ensure that
this room, which is open
to the kitchen and dining
area, stays cozy during
the cooler months.
The dining room
includes an optional
hutch, flanked by windows, that will increase
serving and storage
space, and is divided
from the kitchen by a
raised eating bar and
worktop. A doorway from
the kitchen/dining area
opens onto a covered
porch at the back, mak-
ing outdoor grilling and
meals a breeze.
The window over the
kitchen’s double sink
will let in lots of natural light and an efficient
L-shaped counter configuration will save steps
for the cook. A spacious
pantry offers extra storage.
On the other side of
the home, the master
suite overlooks the back
garden for privacy, and
includes an ensuite with
a double sink and a soaker tub with its own window, as well as a shower
stall. A roomy walk-in
closet completes the layout.
The secondary bedrooms, both with windows to the side, share
a three-piece bathroom.
The laundry room,
with a closet for family
gear, enjoys access to the
double garage, so it can
double as a mud room.
Exterior
finishes
include horizontal siding, a contrast with
wooden shingles in the
gables. Wood pilasters
with brick accents mark
the entrance and front
veranda, as well as the
covered porch at the
back. The brick accents
are echoed on both sides
of the garage door.
This home measures
44 feet wide by 60 feet, six
inches deep, for a total of
1, 556 square feet on the
main floor. Ceilings rise
to nine feet throughout,
except where otherwise
indicated.
Plans for design 5-3682 are available for $695

Government staff can report largess
It’s probably safe to
say that almost everyone
knows a good person who
works for the government
and has shared tales of
tax dollars being wasted.
While those stories sometimes make
for a good chuckle, the
expenses cost us all
through higher taxes
and fees. But imagine
if we could find a way
to get even more people
inside government working towards preventing
wasteful spending in the
first place?
Consider a couple
examples of how conscientious government
employees in Manitoba
and Saskatchewan have
anonymously
helped
fight wasteful spending.
A source at SaskPower,
Saskatchewan’s
publicly owned power utility, recently tipped-off
the Canadian Taxpayers
Federation, a donationbased taxpayers watchdog organization, about
a $143 million refurbishment of the crown corporation’s headquarters
in Regina. When we were
told about the project,
there were no media
stories about the initiative let alone discussions about how the $143
million would be spent.
Thus, the project was flying below the radar and
had avoided scrutiny

Let’s Talk
Taxes
from outside the crown
corporation.
After receiving the tip,
we filed what are known
as “freedom of information requests;” a process
that allows the public
to get documents and
information from government organizations. The
results of our request
turned out to be quite
fruitful.
Incredibly, the crown
corporation wanted to
spend $282,000 for a rooftop patio (including heaters and $72,750 worth of
stone floors), $65,628 for
“living walls” (putting
grass on the walls around
the elevator areas),
$200,000 for kitchen
equipment and $173,250
on metal cladding for the
“penthouse” to name a
few of the more questionable items on the list.
Fortunately, once we
brought the proposed
expenses to light, the
minister responsible for
SaskPower put his foot
down and said the ‘grandiose’ renovations will
not move forward. And
with that, hundreds of
thousands of ratepayer
dollars – perhaps even
millions – have been
saved.
In Manitoba, whistleblower tips helped the
Canadian
Taxpayers
Federation (CTF) draw
attention to employees
at a child welfare agency
who received bonuses
just for showing up for
work. Fortunately, once
we brought the matter to light, the minister
responsible banned the
‘show up for work bonuses’ going forward.
Those are just a
couple examples of how
those on the inside have
anonymously helped prevent wasteful spending.
Thankfully,
technology allows insiders
to speak out without
jeopardizing their positions. For example, we
often receive anonymous phone calls from
blocked numbers, emails
from accounts people
set up to converse with
us, and many tips still
come through regular
mail. Sometimes people
have documents to share
while other times they
can tell us exactly what
documents to ask for.
Certainly many whistle-
blowers notify the media,
politicians and other
organizations
about
what’s going on too.
Obviously, if a whistleblower has shared information with you, you too
can always use the same
aforementioned tactics
to get the word out. The
Canadian
Taxpayers
Federation has brought
many problems to light
over the years that we
learned about from those
outside
government;
friends or relatives of
government employees,
employees of businesses
who did work for the government, etc.
The bottom line is,
the more people watchdogging government, the
more money we can all
save.

Prairie Director for the

Taxpayers
