Color Matching
Let us share our color library with you. We'll
happily suggest a starting formula at no charge. You
must send us a color swatch to match. It can be on
fabric or paper and is very important that you
include the fabric type you are dyeing. Our PRO MX
shade library is dyed primarily on cotton.
If you need an exact color match, we can do that
also. We must have a sample of your desired color
and the cloth that you are planning to dye, in order
to complete the actual color matching in the lab.
We charge for this service and the matched color
must be purchased in 5 pound quantities or larger.
Please call for further details.
Lectures and W orkshops
Our Technical Staff is available to speak for
industrial, scholastic and non-profit groups. Lecture
and workshop fees vary, depending upon the type of
group, length and content. We offer a wide range

chemistry and specific techniques on dyeing and

Dye and WashFast Acid Dye, Dye Painting, Indigo
Dyeing, Marbling on fabric, and Designing with
Setacolor. Additional topics can be discussed on
request.

Cibacron/Sabracron F Reactive Dye
(for cotton, silk, rayon, linen & bamboo)
These dyes are similar to the PRO MX dyes, but work at a slightly
warmer temperature, 105E to 120EF (40E to 50EC). They also dye
protein fibers -- wool and silk -- using acid at a boil or with steam.
Colors range from delicate pastels to vibrant shades and are
completely intermixable. Two ounces (58 gm) of dye will color
approximately 3 pounds or 14 yards (13 meters) of cotton muslin to a
medium shade in a solid shade dye bath or 12 T-shirts for tie dye.
Store mixed Sabracron F Reactive Dyes in liquid form (without
fixative) for two weeks at room temperature. This makes them a
ideal choice for production dyers and school programs that prefer to
store dye in liquid form.
Directions available for: Solid Shade Dyeing, Gradation Dyeing,
Direct Application, Tie Dye, Home Washing Machine Dyeing

Liquid Reactive Dyes
7
(for cotton, silk, rayon, & linen)
The Liquid Reactive Dyes (Trade Name: Remazol Liquid Dyes) are an ideal alternative to the H-Liquid Dyes for traditional silk
painting. The Liquid Reactive Dyes are very concentrated and must be diluted for painting. All the colors are completely
intermixable. Set hand painted or printed fabric by steaming, or at room temperature with PRO Fix LHF. Immersion dyeing needs
140EF (60EC) temperatures.

PROsperse Disperse Dye
Vat Dyes
(for polyester, nylon, acrylic, acetate rayon & ingeo)
Designed to permanently dye synthetic fibers -- in particular polyester,
nylon, acrylic, acetate rayon. Solid shade dyeing is done at a boil. A
swelling agent, PRO Dye Carrier NSC, is necessary for the dye to
penetrate polyester fiber. Two ounces (58 grams) of dye powder will dye
25 pounds (11 kilograms) of polyester to a medium shade in a solid shade
dye bath. Many polyester/cotton fabrics have a permanent press finish.
This must be removed before successful dyeing is achieved.

(for cotton, linen, rayon and silk)
Vat Dyes are a unique class of dye, similar to Indigo. The dye powder
is not soluble in water, nor will it dye cellulose or silk fibers, until
reduction takes place, usually at 120o to 140EF(50E to 60EC). Indigo
requires a reducing agent, Thiox, and an alkali, Lye. ½ ounce of vat dye
will make a vat of 1¼ gallons (5 liters). Vat dyes lend themselves
beautifully to bound resist techniques, like shibori, because they
discharge the original color and deposit a new color all in one step,
leaving a little halo around the patterned area. It’s just like magic!

deColourant - Color Remover
Discharge Supplies
12
Discharge is the process of chemically removing color from dyed
fabric. Not all dyes will discharge. It is very important to do a test
before working on a large project to ensure you are satisfied with the
results. Use Acid Gas cartridges in your respirator with all of the
discharge chemicals. Rubber gloves, safety goggles and apron are
recommended.

Batik
Traditional batik is an ancient form of resist dyeing. Hot wax penetrates the cloth preventing dye from spreading to these areas.
Designs may involve many or only one color depending upon the number of times the hot wax is applied and the cloth is dipped into
different colored dye baths. Please read Wax Safety information on page 29 before batiking.

Petroleum based, microcrystalline is used
like bees wax to soften paraffin wax for
better adhesion to the fabric and less
crackle. Also called "sticky wax". May be
used alone for no "crackle" design.
Microcrystalline wax comes in 1 pound
cakes. Melting point is 160E to 170EF (71E

Add a pinch of PRO MX Reactive Dye powder to the resist and mix
well until dissolved. We've found it works best if the dye is added
the day before it is needed. Apply directly from the 1.25 ounce
bottle. See page 16 for refill bottles and additional tips. Comes
with both a flat cap for storage and the applicator cap.

Cold W ax Resist
Cold Wax Resist is another way to create solid areas of resist on cloth,
however it won’t crackle like a true batik. It comes as a liquid to paint or
stamp on your fabric to retain the original color of the cloth. It cannot be silk
screened on the fabric. Cold Wax Resist is water soluble and therefore is not
appropriate for immersion dye baths.

PROfab Color Concentrates
(for all fabrics)
PROfab Color Concentrates are pure textile
pigment colors in a water dispersion. They are
made of finely ground particles of color that
allow for maximum penetration into the fiber
or other painted surfaces.
PROfab Color Concentrates and PROfab Base
Extender make our Textile Paint. For
optimum viscosity control the PROfab Lo
Crock Binder and PROfab Thickener are
helpful. PROfab Color Concentrates, with
their superior degree of light fastness, are
used to extend the color range of PROfab
Textile Paints, Opaque and PRObrite. They
are also used in conjunction with PRO Retayne
to color paper pulp.
NOTE: For ease in dispensing, Color
Concentrates in sizes 4 to 32 ounces are now
packaged in a squeeze bottle with a yorker
cap.

20
These well known paints are ready to use on all fabrics, even synthetic blends. Setacolor Transparent, Opaque, Shimmer and Fluorescent are all
intermixable, making a rainbow of colors. Mix with Lightening Medium, a colorless extender, to obtain pastel shades. They go on smoothly and do
not change the hand of the fabric. Heat set them for permanence.
Setacolor Transparent

the right consistency for hand painting. Mix
with a little water and they act like a liquid dye.

stenciling, salt effects, screen printing, hand
painting and exciting sun printing. Heat setting
is required for permanence.

techniques, Stenciling
Setacolor Shimmer(opaque) is permanent,
non-stiffening and shimmery on any fabric.

to kick a little glimmer into the paint. Heat
setting is required for permanence.

Shiva Artist's Paintstiks
23
Shiva® Artist's Painstiks® are oil paint in a crayon form. They are
made of wax, a small amount of low-acid linseed oil, and pigment.
When the paints are not in use, a thin film or skin forms over the
paint and keeps the paint from drying up. Once the protective film
is removed, Paintstik colors are the consistency of a lipstick or
grease-paint. Paintstiks are solid, but softer than a pastel or
crayon. The solid form of the paint makes them unique in the paint
world – you can use the paint directly on fabric or paper (or any
porous surface) or apply the paint with a brush.

Color Magnet Pen
Shake well and apply by drawing, stamping or
stenciling. Let dry thoroughly. Drying can be
aided by the use of a hair dryer. Dye
according to dye package instructions. The
more diluted the dye, the greater the
contrast. For best results, we recommend the
immersion dyeing method. Color Magnet™ will
attract more dye where it has been applied.

The products listed in our catalog are
considered relatively non-toxic but it is best
to avoid unnecessary exposure. Keep in mind
that they are industrial chemicals and not
intended for inhalation or ingestion. We
encourage teachers to advise students about
safety precautions and proper use of safety
equipment, clean work habits and responsible
use of products. All artists should use the
following safeguards:
W Do not eat, drink, or smoke in areas where
dyes and chemicals are used.
W Work in a well-ventilated area.
W If you experience an adverse symptom to
anything, move away from the area to fresh
air. If the symptoms persist, stop using the
product & consult your physician.
W Wear a disposable dust/mist respirator if
you dye fabric occasionally. If you dye fabric
on a regular basis wear a MSHA/NIOSH
approved respirator with cartridges for dusts,
mists, and fumes. Disposable dust/mist
respirators don't help with fumes.
W Even though dyes are not absorbed by the
skin you should wear rubber gloves, old
clothes or protective clothing, and even old
shoes.
W Wear goggles when working with corrosive
chemicals such as acetic acid and lye (you only
have one set of eyes).
W Contact lens wearers should be careful
around powders to avoid eye irritation.
W Cover your work area with dampened
newspaper. Weigh and mix dyes and other
powders with local exhaust ventilation or use a
mixing box. See Helpful Information at right.
W Do not mix powders near furnace or air
conditioner intake pipes.
W Use appropriate utensils to stir solutions
and dye baths. If you use food utensils as
dyeing tools don't reuse them for food
preparation.
W Avoid exposure to dye powders, auxiliary
chemicals and vapors during pregnancy or
lactation.
W Avoid prolonged contact with the skin.
W Vacuum floors and surfaces, do not sweep.
W Keep dye and auxiliary containers closed
and in a cool dry place, away from food and out
of the reach of children when not in use.
W Wipe up spills immediately. Liquid dye
dried to a powder can be accidentally inhaled
or ingested.
W Label dye container with purchase date to
insure out of date dye is not used. See page
28 for shelf life information.
W Clearly label all solutions and containers of
powder. Do not remove the supplier's name or
hazard warning labels.
W Always add acid to water.
W Always add Lye to cold water.
Studio Safety & Guidelines
Disposal
Wax
Quantities of dyes and auxiliary chemicals
used by home dyers rarely exceed limits set
for disposal in municipal or even septic
systems. Concentrated highly acidic or
alkaline waste water can upset the balance of
a septic system. The amount of rinse water
used for a normal dye bath is sufficient to
dilute your dye bath for disposal purposes.
Therefore, waste water disposal should not
be a problem. If you have questions about
disposal contact your local board of health
for guidelines specific to your area.
Waxes pose a specific set of safety concerns.
Read and follow the guidelines below before
batiking with hot wax.
Clean Up
Clean up work area with damp sponge and
towels. Remove dye stains with a household
cleaner containing bleach. Do not use bleach
to remove dye stains from hands. Instead
use a specifically designed hand cleaner ReduRan (see pg. 17). While hands are dry,
rub a small amount of hand cleaner on hands
and work in well. Add a small amount of water
and work until dye residue is loosened. Wash
off thoroughly with soap and water and dry
hands. Repeat as necessary.
Protect those who cannot protect themselves
- children and pets. Clearly label dyes and
auxiliary chemicals and keep in safe storage
and out of the reach of children. Supervise
children carefully.
Helpful Information
W Always use proper ventilation in your work
area. Create a local exhaust system by
putting a portable exhaust fan in a window, so
it pulls air from the room to the outside.
W Heated wax releases irritating chemicals
including acrolein and aldehydes. There is no
approved MSHA/NIOSH filter for acrolein.
A respirator is not a substitute for good
ventilation.
W Heat wax to the lowest temperature at
which it remains liquid.
W Hot wax is a fire hazard. Do not leave it
unattended.
W Wax forms potentially hazardous vapors at
high temperatures and may ignite. Do not use
open flames, such as a gas or propane burner,
to heat wax. Instead use a crock pot or
electric fry pan with a temperature control.
California Proposition 65
California Proposition 65 is a labeling act that
requires a special label on products that
contain (in any amount) any chemical which is
known to the State of California to cause
cancer. Many household items including
rubbing alcohol and some bug sprays are on
the list, as well as car exhaust and cigarette
smoke. You may find this label on a few of our
products because they contain trace amounts
of alcohol and formaldehyde which are on the
Prop 65 list.
How to make a mixing box
Cut off the top and one side of a 10"x10"
cardboard box. Cut a stack of newspapers
the size of the inside dimensions and place
them inside the box. Dampen the surface
of the newspaper with a sponge or spray
bottle filled with water. Measure dye or
auxiliary powder and dissolve it with water.
Once the powder is mixed with water,
carefully roll up the top sheet of
newspaper and discard. This way any
excess powder that falls on the damp
newspaper does not blow around.
Material Safety Data Sheets
We have MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet)
on all our products. This information sheet
details precautions, potential health hazards,
and clean up information for industrial
applications. Free copies are available upon
request for each item purchased.

Shelf life
The length of a products shelf life depends partly on atmospheric conditions. Store dye
powders and auxiliary chemicals at room temperature and out of direct light. For longest shelf
life, store mixed dyes in glass jars instead of plastic ones. Use this table as a guide. Test old,
out of date, dyes before using them on a project. Date your dye jars when you receive an
order; this way you will always know how fresh your dyes are.

Calculate estimated shipping
1. Add all weights of the items ordered and round up to the next higher pound.
2. Multiply the above total weight by 1.5 and round up to the next higher pound. This is the total shipping weight of your
order, boxes and packaging materials. Use this weight to calculate shipping charges.
3. Look up your zip code on the UPS/FEDEX GROUND zone chart. If your zip code is not listed please use zone 8 to
calculate your shipping charges.
4. Using your zone and shipping weight from above, calculate your shipping charge from the UPS/FEDEX GROUND rate
chart on next page. Enter this amount on the Shipping Charges line on the order form. Add additional handling
charges that apply on the Handling Charges line on the order form.
