So what’s new?
Dear readers,
It's easy to forget each other in our
stressful start to the day, where we
might be more touchy with our
smartphones than our loved ones. In a
quickly growing digital society, are we
more touchy-feely with our smartphone
than loved ones? Are high tech mornings
contributing to low-touch lives?
It's a well-known fact that a warm
touch, a loving hug or even a friendly
handshake releases the "cuddle
chemical" oxytocin which helps us relax
and lowers anxiety while simultaneously
creating feelings of happiness and joy.
But touch deprivation is a real thing,
and whatever our relationship status
may be, we need more human contact
than we're getting.
So we say "Kick start your morning
with a hug!" Put the gadgets down and
connect for real with your loved ones.
Maybe you can prepare a meal together
(we have recipes to share on pg 11),
have fun with the crossword at the back
of this newsletter, or just swing by the
IKEA store and check out the latest
products we have to offer.
Looking forward to 2015!

Imagination comes to life
Every year since 2003, IKEA has run the Soft Toys for Education campaign
to support children’s education. For every soft toy sold during the campaign,
the IKEA Foundation donates 1 euro to UNICEF and Save the Children.
Thanks to our loyal customers, we have raised more than 67 million euros,
reaching more than 11 million children through 99 projects in 46 countries!
This year’s Soft Toys campaign will run from 9 Nov 2014 – 3 Jan 2015,
together with a Give Twice initiative where you can choose to donate your
purchased soft toy to our selected charity, Food from the Heart.
New for this year’s campaign, is a drawing competition
from 8-23 Nov 2014. We want to give kids
(0-12 years old) of our IKEA FAMILY members, the first
chance to design the next soft toy collection for IKEA,
at a special event on 8 Nov 2014.
The main idea is that drawings of children’s dream
soft toys are turned into real soft toys. These would be
sold in IKEA stores worldwide as a limited collection
next year. And of course, for every soft toy sold 1
euro is donated to UNICEF and Save the Children.
Come co-create with us for a good cause! National finalists will be announced
in Dec 2014, while the global winners will be announced in Jan 2015.
Registration for the event will be from 24 Oct – 2 Nov. On a first-come-firstserved basis. Read more and sign up here www.IKEA.com.sg/softtoy

Skip the queues! On 8 Nov 2014, you can meet
a dedicated kitchen specialist who will sit down

What to consider when planning a bed area
Firstly, decide on what type of bed comfort, style of bed and space
for storage you need. Whether you choose open or closed storage,
both solutions have advantages and disadvantages. For example,
closed storage will protect your clothes from dust.
Secondly, decide how you want to organise your clothes – By usage?
By season? By style? This will influence your choice and placement
of interior fittings, such as shelves, baskets, drawers, etc. Lastly,
think about where you most need task, general and mood light.
For small spaces, a bed with built-in
shelves/storage offers the same
function as a bedside table.
Bed linen provides more than
comfort. It can also contribute
to a bedroom’s overall colour
scheme or style.
An open storage unit provides
privacy as well as extra storage
space. Choose a storage system
that is versatile enough to be
used as open storage for clothes
anywhere in the home, and/or
furnishing a walk-in closet.
Having spotlights above the wardrobe, or ones
that turns on when the wardrobe doors open
helps provide a convenient overview.
Using a wall lamp on each side of the
double bed provides you with light
but does not disturb your partner.

Bed and Bath brochure! www.IKEA.com.sg/brochures
That’s why we had your comfort
foremost in mind when we started
working with NORDLI bed frame and
bedside table. What is it that people
look for in a bedside table? And what
should a bedside table be like today,
when we use our mobile phones,
tablets and computers in bed?
A bedside table provides a place to
put a lamp, eyeglasses and a book,
but it should also provide an easy and
attractive way to lead cords to mobile
phones, tablets and anything else you
may need to charge overnight. And
it would also be nice to have a little
drawer for your jewellery and watch
If you open the drawer on the front,
which has a bevelled lower edge instead
of a handle, you’ll find a drawer and
a shelf inside. On top of the drawer,
there’s a removable insert with two
compartments for mobile phones,
watches and jewellery. And even though
the bedside table has all these features
it still looks remarkably simple with a
slender shape that makes it fit even in
bedrooms of the smaller kind.
the inside story
When living in small spaces with a sofa bed to
sleep on, make sure you choose a model that
is specially designed for day and night use.
Then add a flexible light that is adjustable to
keep it glare-free when sitting on the sofa,
lying in bed or on a sofa bed. This will help to
reduce eyestrain. In addition, almost any small
moveable furniture can double as a bedside
table, for example, a footstool or a coffee table.
Next, the bed frame. What is it that we
look for in a bed frame? Well, for one
thing, we want it to be sturdy. Which
is why we made NORDLI bed frame
in a solid material so it sits firmly on
the ground. But just because it’s solid
doesn’t mean it has to look heavy,
we thought, and gave NORDLI taller
legs that also make it easier for you to
vacuum under the bed and give room
for storage boxes. The small round pads
under the legs raise the legs a bit from
the ground.
We know it’s a small detail, but with
NORDLI every detail is important.
Something you’ll notice every time
you sleep in your bed or put a book,

Designer thoughts
”NORDLI bed frame and bedside
table are furniture pieces for
everyday use that exude quality
and simplicity. And give a pleasant
experience every day you use them.
The bed frame is extra sturdy and
has tall legs, which makes cleaning
easier. And the bedside table can
hide a power strip for lamps, mobile

can be hidden in one of the back
legs. NORDLI has all the good
features that make it so easy to like.

Industrialism was one of the inspirations
behind the functionalist style that emerged
in the ’50s and ’60s. The bathroom series
GUNNERN gives something of a nostalgic
trip back to a metal bathroom cabinet of
that era which nowadays can mostly only
be found in flea markets, with any luck.
The rustic style originally derives from
the design language of industrial buildings
and public spaces, which are noted for
functionality and durability.

with its soft, rounded corners is perfect in
tight spaces where it’s best to avoid sharp
protruding corners.
The table in three levels has been given
a somewhat special function to make it
work especially well in a bathroom. Here,
the designers were inspired by old dental
surgeries. The table top has namely a low
raised edge, which is not only a beautiful
detail but is meant to prevent small
things from slipping off. The table is also
characterised by the same functional and
honest simplicity. The visible fittings and
ease of assembly are part of the overall
functional idea behind everything.
The entire series works equally well in
a large home as a small one, in a guest
bathroom, family bathroom, cramped
hallway or kitchen.

16 October is World Food Day. A day to remind us that billions of people around the
world are suffering from acute hunger, not knowing where or when their next meal
will come. Yet many of us waste food on a daily routine. Either we buy much more
than we consume, or we discard food simply because it is not “up to standard”.
We can all play a part in improving our food systems, even in our homes, by making
good decisions about what food we buy and eat, and by reducing food waste.
It’s very common to
buy a bag of potatoes,
garlic and onions from
the supermarket, and end
up with more than what
you need. Here’s how you
can combine these “side
ingredients” to make a
hearty dish.

Food styling and photography
Food and product styling became a passion by accident while
I was on break from my long-time career in advertising. In
the last five years, my experience in styling food and products
has taught me valuable, insightful and exciting lessons on
preparing, conceptualising and styling food and products for
the camera lens. Being married to a commercial photographer
has also allowed me to have both an awesome mentor and
my harshest critic. I have in the course of these 5 years
developed my own unique style that I use and adapt according
to my client’s requirements and needs.
Below is a list of tips and tricks for basic food styling that I
have found most useful when doing commercial, editorial or
even personal styling of food and/or products.
1. Choosing your plates
• Size – The proportion of food to
plate is important. Unless you are
aiming for an artistic visual spectacle
in fine dining, the food served should
be in proportion to the plate. It should
neither appear too scant with a lot
of space around it, nor overcrowded,
which creates a messy composition.
For example, you should vary your
plate sizes according to the food you
are featuring, such as placing a little
entrée on a 6-inch dish, rather than
on a 12-inch dinner plate.
• Style – Have a classic selection of
white plates and bowls. White is a
neutral shade and will complement
the set up when the food is garnished.
12 IKEA FAMILY news
In contrast, patterned plates will
complicate the composition and
distract the eye from the food. You
can also use plain, colored plates to
liven up the dishes without spoiling
the visual effect.
2. Capturing the essence
• Focus – While you may be
tempted to rely on pretty plates to
make the food look more appealing,
remember it is vital for the food itself
to look good. Always concentrate on
capturing the essence of the dish,
such as the tenderness of the roast
with its creamy gravy. Identify the
highlights of the dish and make every
effort to focus on these areas.
• Angle – Just as we have our
preferred angle when being
photographed, so does food. To find
its most photogenic angle, capture the
dish from multiple angles and camera
heights to figure out which camera
position best suits it.
• Timing – Set up for the shoot in
advance and capture food as soon as it
is plated when the dish is still moist and
fresh. When exposed to air, meats dry
out and salads wilt. To combat these
challenges, brush the cooking juices
over the meat; rinse the vegetables in
cold water and apply the dressing with
a diffuser to keep the salad light and
crisp. The shorter the wait time before
taking a shot, the higher the chance of
capturing the food at its best.
• So, get the camera ready in the
angle you think is suitable and quickly
execute the shot as soon as the food
is ready!
3. Setting the mood
Plan ahead of time how you want each
dish to be presented. What is the
overall mood you wish to convey?
• Choice of colours – You can
achieve warm or cool tones for the
image through the choice of colours.
Decide on what you prefer before the
photography session and then choose
your plates, cutlery, background, and
any other additional props. A cool blue
tone will create a calm, harmonised
image while warm colours such
as red and coral are vibrant and
eye-catching.
• Choice of materials – Different
props and materials for the
background can determine and
enhance the mood of the overall setup with their textures. For example,
a wooden table would be suitable for
a nature theme, while a silky fabric
would lend a soft feel to the shot.
Classic, polished cutlery will give the
dish a contemporary mood while an
aged embossed set will make it look
more rustic.
• Choice of props – Two rules of
thumb here: balance and creativity.
Do not clutter your shot with too
many props (this can muddle up your
picture!) and avoid burning a hole
in your pocket with expensive ones.
Consider what you already have
and be creative with them – pretty
papers can become placemats; a
clean curtain can be turned into a
tablecloth; your food can also be
photographed straight from your
frying pan. And, don’t forget – small
details are critical too. A fresh napkin,
a lit candle or flowers tied with a satin
ribbon can create a mood of elegance.
4. Capturing light
Light is one of the trickiest things
to set up. So, rather than trying to
create a good light set-up, the quicker
way is to understand natural light
– diffused light is best for capturing
food – and know when it is at its best
for photography.
• Outdoors – On a regular day
outdoors, the morning hours of
7am - 9am, and the evening light of
6.30pm - 7.30pm are the best timings
for capturing food. These times are
when light is most diffused.
• Indoors – When shooting indoors,
set up next to the window. If there

is direct sunlight streaming in, use a
thin curtain, a white sheet or a piece
of parchment paper to diffuse it.
For a brighter, more evenly lit
photograph, use a homemade bounce
board to reflect light. Place it directly
opposite the light source. Good
bounce board options available from
stationery stores are white foam
boards and boards with silver or
gold aluminum foil.
5. Don’t listen to your mum.
Play with your food!
Try out different plates and cutlery
and experiment with presentation.
You can only learn more about food
and understand its chemistry when
you are unafraid to make mistakes.
Explore how the different styles
and combinations or arrangements
work and which
combinations
look best. It is
only then that
you will find
your distinctive
style and perfect
it through
practice.
Enjoy!

New Homeowners
Congratulations on your
new home!
When it comes to style, there is no such thing as “one size fits all”. In a
recent Life at Home survey conducted by IKEA, it showed us that ‘comfort’ is
not about any single home furnishing or product function, rather, it’s about
creating an environment where household members can be with each other,
relax, and live their best lives. Home is about connecting with family and
friends to create and share memories. Each room has a story to tell; a laugh,
a surprise, moments to remember. There are many things to think about.
Balance and harmony
•
•
A balanced room is created through a harmonious interplay between material,
colour, lighting, furnishings and the proportions of the room.
However, to create an interesting and personal atmosphere, there needs to be
contrast between objects, patterns, shapes, sizes and textures.
•
•
•
•
Flooring should be chosen in
accordance with the function of
the room. For instance, have an
easy-to-clean surface e.g. ceramic
tiles in the kitchen area.
Using rugs on top of laminate
flooring helps top absorb sound
and soften the atmosphere.
Large floor patterns demand
large spaces.
Light floors make the room appear
larger, while dark floors make it
appear smaller.
Walls
•
•
•
•
•
Painted wall surfaces are easier
to maintain and more durable
if treated with a silk or satin finish
rather than a matt finish.
A free-standing glass wall or a
low wall within a room divides the
functional space, creating new
proportions; while still letting
light through and maintains an
open atmosphere.
Using the same colour scheme
within a home creates unity and
an illusion of more space.
Using mirrors on walls can make
a room appear twice the size.
Furniture such as bookcases
or sideboards can also act as
room dividers with added
storage functions.
Windows
•Windows are part of the
architecture and need to be in
harmony with the size, shape
and style of the room.
•Larger windows can frame a view
and let light in while smaller ones
ensure some privacy.
Doors
The balance is improved with a
coloured wall.
16 IKEA FAMILY news
The balance can also be improved
by adding another piece of furniture,
textiles or other objects.
•A wide door suggests hospitality,
a narrow door suggests a
secret passage.
•A space-saving sliding door
can also act as a wall.
A dark colour on the back wall
of a room visually decreases
the depth of the room making
it appea wider. The back wall
appears to come forward.
This effect is emphasised if
"warm" colours are used.
Using different colours on
the left and right long walls
create an imbalance and the
room feels incorrectly colour
co-ordinated.
Horizontal patterns make
the room appear lower.
A corresponding pattern along
the floor would make the room
appear wider.
A vertical pattern on the walls
make the room appear to
be higher. Different colours
further emphasis this.
A vertical pattern solely on
the back wall creates a similar
effect although not as strong.
Diagonal patterns, rectangles,
circles, and so on, all create
different visual effects.
•Different colours, patterns
and application techniques
change the room dramatically.
•There are no set rules for
how to work with several
colours in a room but
usually the most successful
approach is to let one colour
dominate and to let the
others be more neutral.
•A ceiling that is slightly darker
than the walls makes a room
appear to be lower and wider.
• A matt white ceiling reflects the
light back into the room without
causing glare.
The balance of the room is improved
with pictures.
In these examples, the
heaviest colour is on the floor.
The lighter colours on the
walls make the room
appear spacious.
Colour
Ceiling
An unbalanced room.
Co-ordinated colours create
a harmonious and unified
look. With colour, it is
possible to erase or
accentuate boundaries.

Want to get a home

what to get? Here
are some ideas.
Activities and functional needs
Furnishings is based on functional needs in different living situations. When
placing furniture in a room, start by considering the location of doors and
how people move about in or through the room. Then consider the functions
of connecting rooms. E.g. how can you best utilise space in a living room with
a dining area that is in connection to a kitchen? Also, think about the window
location. Can you make use of the daylight? Create space by placing the
furniture in functional groups to create a room within the room.

Come and go
When preparing for the day ahead, things need to be found in a hurry. The entrance

emptying of pockets, unloading keys, mail and mobile phones when entering a home.

Socialise
Personal care
Cooking and eat
With socialising comes a variety of needs
from being comfortable to having the
flexibility to change or rearrange for
different occasions. It can be through the
internet on your laptop, huddled around
the kitchen table, or in different clusters
in the living room.
Storage, functional solutions, activities
and safety need to be considered for
all ages in the home whether getting
dressed in the bedroom, bathroom,
or walk-in dressing room.
Do you eat in the kitchen, in the dining
room, in bed or infront of the TV?
Do you snack, throw dinner parties or
have cosy dinner-for-twos? Do you cook
up a storm, or just need a microwave?
Dress
Rest and sleep
With the right type of storage, clothes
are easier to find and will require less
care, such as ironing, which saves
valuable time. It also lets you start your
day possibly with less stress and panic.
How do you relax at home? Is it in
solitude or with friends? Some relax
in bed with a good book, or in a cosy
armchair listening to music. Others relax
with a glass of wine or when exercising.
There are countless ways to wind down,
so think of what helps you to relax and
where it occurs.
Housework
For easier cleaning and
tidying up, ensure enough
space around furniture.
Wall-mounted furniture and
furniture with castors also
make cleaning easier. Also
think about storage for all
your cleaning equipment,
and ensure dangerous
liquids and detergents are
stored away from children.

choosing a pet
For Small Animal Owners:
1.
2.
3.
4.
1. Is your child able to clean out the cage
at least once a week?
2. Are you able to take your pet to the vet
for an annual check-up?
3. Are you able to ensure that your pet's cage is the right size?
4. Is your child able to feed your pet
the right kind of food to meet its
dietary needs?
5. Is your child able to spend quality time
to interact with your pet?
6. When petting your small animal, is your
child able to make sure that your pet is
handled gently and with slow movements?
7. Is your child able to ensure that your
small animal is getting enough exercise?
8. Is your child able to ensure that the water
you give your pet is clean and fresh?
9. When purchasing beddings and litters,
do you first read the care section to see
if it's appropriate for your pet?
10. Do you regularly check your pet's cage
to ensure that it is escape-proof?
Are you able
to microchip
your dog?
Is your child able
to feed your dog
two to three
times a day
depending on its size and diet?
Is your child able to learn about the foods
that are bad for your dog?
Is your child able to regularly groom
your dog?
So you are thinking of
getting a pet for your child?
What a lovely idea!
But before you rush off to the nearest
animal shelter to adopt one (because
there's nothing quite like saving a life
that is capable of loving you like no
other), perhaps you want to take this
casual quiz to see if you and your child
make great pet parents? It's by no
means a hard core quiz, but it does
give you a feel of what it takes to be
a responsible pet owner.
For Cat Owners:
1. Are you able to
ensure that your
cat is spayed or
neutered?
2. Are you able to
take your cat
for regular
veterinary check-ups?
3. Is your child able to ensure that you're
giving your cat an appropriate amount
of cat food and fresh water at all times?
4. Is your child able to regularly clean your
cat's litter box?
5. Are you able to kitty-proof your home?
6. Is your child able to play with your cat daily?
7. Are you able to provide your cat fun and
safe toys for exercise?
8. Is your child able to be intimately familiar
with your cat’s normal behaviours and
habits as any changes to the normal
routine can indicate illness?
9. Are you able to provide your cat a scratch
post to satisfy its need to scratch and to
also prevent damage to your furniture?
10.Is your child able to regularly groom
your cat?
11.Are you able to provide your cat a collar
and an ID tag that includes your name,
address, and telephone number?
12.Are you able to get your cat vaccinated?
13.If you're planning a trip away, are you
able to make proper arrangements for
your cat's care?
14.Is your child able to regularly clean your
cat's teeth to ensure healthy gums
and teeth?
15. Are you able to always use a cat carrier
when transporting your cat?
5. Is your child able to ensure that the water
you're giving your dog is always fresh
and clean?
6. Are you able to regularly take your dog to
the vet for check-ups?
7. Is your child able to ensure that your dog
gets regular, daily walks/exercise?
8. Are you able to ensure that your dog
is vaccinated?
9. Are you able to ensure that your dog,
his bedding and your home are free from
parasites such as fleas and ticks that can
cause serious diseases?
10.Is your child able to be familiar with your
dog's patterns in terms of eating,
drinking, sleeping and relieving himself
as any major variation in these patterns
could indicate serious illness?
11.As dogs never outgrow the need to chew,
is your child able to provide your dog with
chew toys to satisfy its urges?
12. Is your child able to bathe your dog on
a regular basis appropriate to its breed
and environment?
13.Are you able to keep your dog's nails
short to keep it comfortable and prevent
paw injuries?
14.Is your child able to clean your dog's teeth
regularly to prevent tooth decay and
gum disease?
15.Are you able to keep poisonous substances
in your home out of your dog's reach?
16.Are you able to keep your vet's number

17.Is your child able to ensure that your

18.Is your child able to be aware of the
