They are freely open to everyone. The walks take place whatever the weather, but may be shortened by the leader in view of conditions on the day. There is no need to book. Simply turn up in good time and enjoy. There is no fixed charge for any of the local walks, but if you see a hat left out, you may like to contribute £1 to the leader’s costs - which will always be gratefully received ! If you’re not sure about any of the details in this programme please feel free to contact the appropriate leader a few days in advance. GR. TQ 657.191 Dallington sits high on a Wealden ridge with fine views all round. We will walk through springtime woods and meadows. Leader: Geoffrey Mead, University of Sussex “Beware the Ides of March !” SUNDAY 15th March 10:30 am 7 miles / 11 km Meet at Ambersham Common car park, north of the Hoyle/Graffham crossroads GR. SU 913.195 A delightfully varied walk circling around the village of Graffham to visit the stud farm at Lavington and maybe see the new-born foals and catch sight of a mad March hare today - gone tomorrow…. Stay between the leader and the back-marker. If you are going to leave the walk for any reason tell someone. Take care when crossing roads - do not simply follow the person in front of you. It is your responsibility to cross safely. Look out for barbed wire, potholes and other hazards. All leaders are first-aid trained; that means they basically know how to keep you comfortable until professional help arrives. Geoffrey offers a series of short urban and country walks with a fascinating insight into the history and geography of the chosen area. Donations to local environmental / historic groups accepted. Walking this year from Eastbourne to Winchester. TQ 295.044 An urban walk after dark around the Hove-Brighton borderland. Leader: Geoffrey Mead, University of Sussex “Winter across the Serpent Commons” SUNDAY 8th February 10 am 8½ miles / 13.5 km Meet at Lavington Common car park, 1 mile west of A285 at Heath End (2 miles south of Petworth) GR. SU 949.187 Following a section of the Serpent Trail, this walk snakes across the commons of West Sussex. GR. TQ 087.119 A high level walk taking in the Long Furlong, Clapham Church and a little yomp over Black Patch. TQ 215.043 A morning walk along the riverside to Old Shoreham and return via the old wooden bridge and airfield. Leader: Geoffrey Mead, Sussex University “The Sussex vendange” SUNDAY 12th October 10:30 am 6 miles / 9.5 km Park in recreation ground just northwest of West Chiltington Common, on the road from the common to West Chilt. GR. TQ 084.179 A walk around two of our most successful vineyards to see how this year’s harvest has gone … and perhaps sample a glass of last year’s vintage. Turn north from A272 at Wisborough Green onto Loxwood Rd for about 1 km. GR. TQ 050.171 A stroll without undue undulation along some lesser known footpaths including a diversion (weather permitting) to where the waters of the canal may flow again Leaders : Peter Anderson & Terry Owen , Per-Rambulations NOVEMBER “Circus-Circus” Yes it does snow on the South Downs Way SUNDAY 2nd November 10 am 2 miles / 3.5 km Meet outside Brighton Fire Station, Preston Circus. GR. TQ 312.055 An urban walk around the Brighton-Preston parish boundary looking for items of local history and the historic landscape. Leader: Geoffrey Mead, Sussex University “Remembrance Sunday in Chichester” “Per-Rambulations Christmas Walk” SUNDAY 9th November 10:15 am 8 miles / 13 km Meet in the car park at Hunston, just east of Poyntz Bridge. GR. SU 865.023 A level walk following the Chichester Canal into the city for 11am. Walking back to the harbour through the marina and then via the pretty ship canal - haunt of coots and moorhens. TQ 098.042 A different location from previous years as we celebrate the arrival of Christmas with a fine walk, mulled wine and cider, hot sausage rolls and mince pies. Leaders : Terry Owen & Peter Anderson, Per-Rambulations “The bottoms around Castle Hill” “The Steyning Christmas Walk” SUNDAY 16th November 10 am 9 miles / 14.5 km Meet at the car park on B2123 Falmer Road, Woodingdean; southwest of Newmarket Hill. GR. TQ 356.063 How many downland ‘bottoms’ can we find along this walk around Castle Hill Nature Reserve ? Wonderful downland walking. A shorter walk may be chosen if weather conditions demand. Leaders : Terry Owen & Peter Anderson, Per-Rambulations DECEMBER SATURDAY 27th December 10:30 am 7 miles / 11 km Meet at Beggars Bush car park on the bostal road over the downs between Steyning & Sompting. GR. TQ 162.080 The chance to walk off the excesses of the previous two days with an invigorating high level walk over the downs. Mulled wine and mince pies await at the end of the walk. TQ 559.038 A winter stroll through fields and lanes at the foot of the South Downs. Leader: Geoffrey Mead, University of Sussex SUNDAY 4th January 10 am 6 miles / 9 km Meet by church at Stanmer Park, off A27 west of Sussex University. GR. TQ.337.097 A bracing walk up onto the South Downs Way at Ditchling Beacon to welcome in the New Year and perhaps blow a few cobwebs away after the festivities Leaders : Terry Owen & Peter Anderson, Per-Rambulations “Charlotte Smith – how did she find the time to write ?” SUNDAY 14th December 10:30 am 6 miles / 9.5 km Meet in the southern car park at Lords Piece, southeast of Burton Mill Pond. GR. SU 992.169 A varied woodland walk with a chance to buy your Christmas tree from the Bignor Park Estate; returning via Sutton and the West Sussex Literary Trail (and an explanation of the title). Leaders: Keith McKenna & Sally Dench, Footprints of Sussex “High winter views of The Arun - 20 times a winner” SUNDAY 18th January 10 am 6 miles / 9 km Meet in car park behind the George Inn at Burpham. Take the minor road north off A27 just 200m east of Arundel Station. GR. TQ 040.089 Almost an institution…. this will be the 20th consecutive year we have done this walk in mid winter.
