everyday situations. The course is designed to teach beginners intermediate basic vocabulary
and communication skills. You will expand your language skills by learning to express your

Step in! - Finnish in Second Life

18th of March - 20th of May 2014, on Tuesdays at 19.00 - 19.45 (10 h)
Place A virtual island in Second Life virtual world.
Adobe Connect (AC) classroom on the Internet will be used in addition. Students should have
access to a computer with an Internet connection as well as a headset and a valid e-mail
address.
There will be tutoring for using Second Life prior the course.
Teacher Anne Palokangas (BA, HuK), native Finnish speaking teacher
Target group Target group: Students who have minimum A2 level skills in Finnish language
Course content The course will take place on a virtual island, where the participants act as a
group using Finnish language. At the same time they practice oral communication skills in
Finnish using also preprepared conversational exercises. The aim of the course is to efficiently
activate the oral language skills of the students and improve their readiness for communication.
At the same time the participants will get to know Second Life as a means of learning a
language. After the course the students are free to continue meeting each other informally in
the course environment with no charge.
Price Free of charge; the students are expected to acquire and pay for the equipment
themselves

The course covers the following topics and grammar: the Finnish alphabet and phonemes,
numerals, the clock, days of the week, months, seasons and the weather. You will learn to tell
about yourself, your family and your appearance and about your day. You will also learn how to
communicate in different everyday situations (e.g. at a kiosk, in a store and in an office). Verb
types and conjugations, the nominative, genitive and partitive in the singular. The possessive
construction. Vowel harmony and consonant gradation and other changes in the stems of
nominatives. Previous studies: No previous studies in Finnish are required but the participants
must be familiar with the Western alphabet.
The course is taught in Finnish.

and traveling. You will learn how to communicate in everyday situations in restaurants, hotels
etc.
Cases of locality, word types, the object, consonant gradation and other changes in the stems
of verbs, the partitive of uncountable nouns. An introduction to spoken Finnish.
The course is taught in Finnish.

sauna and nature. Health issues and getting sick, seeing a doctor. Free time and hobbies.
Festivities and customs. statements. Talking about the past, the past tense in affirmative
statements and the past in negative. Transitive and intransitive verbs. The object. The
construction with ‘täytyy' (must/have to). The relative pronoun ‘joka' (who, which, that).

The course will give the students a peek into Finnish literature by introducing works by Juhani
Aho and Minna Canth among others. The participants will study grammatical structures and

discussions as well as write a short essay based on it. As the course program includes reading

Hauska kesäkurssi, jolla keskitytään suulliseen kielitaitoon ja keskusteluun. Kurssilla
harjoitellaan sujuvan keskustelun kannalta tärkeitä taitoja ja samalla kerrataan peruskurssien
teemoja. Tunnit rakentuvat tutun teeman ympärille, esim. ravintola tai kauppa, johon kaikki
oppitunnin harjoitukset linkittyvät. Myös opiskelijoiden omia toiveteemoja on mahdollista
huomioida. Muistelemme, minkälaisia keskusteluja esim. ravintolassa käydään ja minkälaiset
repliikit ovat siellä tyypillisiä. Ääntämistä harjoitellaan jonkin verran, ja puhumme puhekielen ja

Intensive summer course in Finnish language and Culture
June 23-July 11 2014
Course outline: The course consists of five contact teaching lessons during week-days (5 x 45
minutes), total of 80 lessons. The lessons will be given mainly in Finnish and the teaching is
organized in four level groups, from beginners to advanced (A1-C2). The size of the group is
about 15 students.
Target group: The course is aimed at everyone over the age of 17 and who is interested in
Finnish language and culture.
Leisure time: We also organize versatile recreational activities and experiences evenings and
weekends. Part of the programme is free of charge. Students get to know Finnish nature,
culture and customs in an authentic environment.

Tarvitsetko sujuvuutta suomen kielen taitoosi? Työskenteletkö asiakaspalvelutehtävissä? Tule
mukaan suomen kielen kurssille, jossa painotetaan puhekielen harjoituksia, mutta käydään
myös läpi suomen kieliopin perusteita. Kurssilla tarvitaan suomen kielen alkeiden taidot.
Kouluttajalla on pitkä opettajakokemus ja runsaasti kokemusta asiakaspalvelutilanteissa
vaadittavasta kielitaidosta. Koulutuksessa käydään läpi mm. suomen kielen äänteet, aakkoset,
verbien taivutus, numerot ja viikonpäivät, tervehtiminen, tutustuminen, adjektiivit,
kysymyslauseet ja pieniä käytännön tilanteita
Kohderyhmä: suomen kieltä työtehtävissään tarvitsevat ja kaikki, jotka haluavat sujuvuutta

Kurssi sopii sinulle, joka osaat jo peruskieliopin kuten verbien aikamuodot ja monikon
sijamuodot. Ymmärrät suomea hyvin, mutta haluat hioa vielä erityisesti puhetaitoasi ja laajentaa
sanavarastoasi.
Kurssilla perehdytään ajankohtaisiin aiheisiin ryhmän kiinnostuksen mukaan. Lisäksi opitaan
uutta sanastoa ja harjoitellaan keskustelua vaativimmista teemoista. Kurssin laajuus on 60
tuntia.

Group: The course is suitable for those who know the basics of Finnish (e.g. Finnish for

Contents: You will learn more about the Finnish language and culture through music. Each
lesson is built around a certain artist and his or her songs. When you get to know the artists and
their songs you will also get a wider perspective on Finnish culture. And when you sing in
Finnish you will learn more words and phrases and improve your pronunciation. Welcome to

Contents: This course is intended for those students who have basic knowledge of vocabulary

Finnish.
During this course students will improve their communicational skills by speaking about different
topics (e.g. home, family, shopping, restaurant, traveling, public holidays, timetables, hobbies
etc.)
The focus of the course will be on speaking, listening and activating vocabulary. We will
practise simple everyday discourse.

Goal: To improve communication skills.

Contents: The course is a continuation course for Finnish for Beginners I. Studying Finnish is
continued by learning more vocabulary, grammar and communication skills. The course focuses
on all fields of language: listening, talking, writing and reading.
The following topics will be covered during the course: local cases, word types, consonant
change, past tense, telling about home, work, professions and travelling. In addition to this,
many other topics will be studied according to the chapters of the book.

SUMMER UNIVERSITIES IN FINLAND – IN BRIEF
There are 20 summer universities in Finland, and they organise courses both in cities and
smaller towns across the country throughout the year. Each year nearly 66,000 students,
including more than 1,000 international students, enrol on courses organised by the summer
universities.
Summer universities give an opportunity for both personal and professional development. All
summer universities operate in close partnership and permanent collaboration with Finnish
universities, Universities of Applied Sciences and other institutions of learning.
Courses are open to everyone regardless of age or prior education. However, it is essential to
notice that summer universities offer short-term courses, not degree programmes. The
language of instruction is mainly Finnish, but some courses are taught in English. Among our
non-Finnish speaking students, the most popular courses are on Finnish language and culture .
In addition to student fees, summer universities receive their funding from the state and
municipalities. Summer universities take part in educational and cultural projects that aim for
regional and European development. Therefore their role as educators is important.
Summer universities plan their curricula on a yearly basis in cooperation with Finnish
universities. Interdisciplinary programmes are offered in the fields of cultural studies, European
studies, Finnish language and culture, art, dance, music, theatre, education, environmental
sciences, health care and social sciences. Please note that each summer university has its own
curriculum.
The Association of Summer Universities in Finland is a national body founded in 1972. The aim
is to take care of the interests of summer universities, provide information and collect statistics
about their activities. The association also acts as a coordinating link between various interest
groups and summer universities both nationally and internationally.
