The Art of Imitation—Art News
Cover: Country Cottage,
Colored Pencil by Roger Towle
By Bea Cohen
Some months ago I read an article about how actors prepare for
various biographical roles in order
to be as authentic as possible. Being
an art reporter, I naturally thought
about movie actors playing famous
artists. Movies about artists often focus more on their exciting personal
lives than how they made their art.
If you’ve ever wondered about this,
like it or not, you’re going to learn
how some approached their roles.
Let’s begin with Kirk Douglas
in Lust for Life (1956). He was a
dead ringer for the tragic Vincent
van Gogh. He practiced painting
crows so that he could imitate the
artist’s style. Large colored photos
of van Gogh’s paintings, as well as
copies of his art, were used. Douglas
was nominated for an Oscar, and
Anthony Quinn, playing Gauguin,
won best supporting actor.
In order to play Michelangelo in
The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965),
Charlton Heston studied marble
sculpting, learned how to use a chisel
and a hammer, practiced fresco
painting and learned how not to fall
off a ladder. The movie was nominated for five Oscars.
Ed Harris directed, wrote and
starred in Pollock (2000). He studied
Pollock’s life, analyzed his paintings
and learned to paint in his unusual
style. Harris was also nominated for
an Oscar, and Marcia Gay Harden,
who played Lee Krasner, won an
Oscar for best supporting actress.
Salma Hayek starred as Mexican
artist Frida Kahlo in Frida (2002).
She reproduced Kahlo’s look with
her unibrow and mustache and did
the brush strokes on screen. Hayek
was nominated for an Oscar and the
film won two.
Anthony Hopkins, in Surviving
Picasso (1996), got into character
by eating what Picasso ate every
day. Since Hopkins paints, it came
in handy in portraying the genius.
No Oscars here.
Lastly, Colin Firth practiced
painting to play Vermeer in Girl with
a Pearl Earring (2003). Scarlett
Johansson learned paint grinding
to play the girl in one of the most
famous paintings in the world. The
film won three Oscars.
As for RAC, we’re happy to
announce that we have two new
members and ask, “Are you enjoying
our Artist of the Month display in our
clubhouse entranceways?”
Brooklyn Club News
By Roz Furer
The Brooklyn Club’s evening of
Pizza and Trivia was so much more
than just pizza and trivia.
On Monday, August 18, Brooklyn Club members and prospective
members came together for an
evening of fun and camaraderie
The mood in the room was joyous.
Friends, old and new, had a chance
to enjoy each other’s company while
eating a simply delicious salad prepared for us by Terry, as-well-as
delicious pizza prepared by Emilio’s
Pizza and Family Restaurant in
Toms River.
Just when everyone was feeling
a bit sleepy from food and wine, the
trivia questions appeared. Twentyfive questions of varying degrees
of difficulty, from difficult to very
difficult, were prepared by our board
member, Susan Arbeit. It was apparent from the first question that this
challenge was not going to be a walk
in the park. Susan showed no mercy
in her choice of questions, but in the
end, one table was victorious.
A fabulous evening of fun and
friendship is never complete unless
it ends with an additional onslaught
of calories. Coffee, tea and scrumptious pastries and cookies were
served and enjoyed by all.
Our October 20 meeting is our
way of saying “thank you” to our
members. As a gift from us to you,
we will have an evening of laughter
with the comedy of Jimmy Graham.
There is no charge for this event, but
we will have to prepare accordingly.
Please check the bulletin board and
carousel for more information.
We look forward to seeing you
at our October, November and
December meetings. Your Board
works hard putting together monthly
meetings that everyone can enjoy.
However, without your support and
participation, all of our efforts are in
vain. After a slow start, we are happy
to see so many of our members at
our meetings.
Remember, your Brooklyn Club
meets on the third Monday of every
month at 7:00 PM in the clubhouse.
Mark your calendar, bring your
friends, (new members are always
welcome) and join us.

The Shields Go To Brooklyn
By Phil Gillhaus
On Thursday, August 25, forty
members and supporters of the Renaissance Shields boarded a chartered bus bound for Brooklyn, NY
on a nostalgic trip.
The first stop was L&B Spumoni
Gardens in Bensonhurst. Here the
gang enjoyed L&B’s famous Sicilian
pizza, followed by various spumoni
treats. The restaurant’s outdoor patrons were a little startled when a
huge bus pulled up and disgorged a
gang of senior men, hungry for pizza
and ice cream.
The next stop was MCU Park in
Coney Island. Here the group paid
their respects at the Ebbetts Field
Wall of Remembrance, which contains laser engraved images of all
of the first responders who perished
on 9/11.
The group then attended a
Brooklyn Cyclones game. It was
Gil Hodges Day at MCU Park, and
jerseys with the number 14 were
everywhere. The Cyclones beat the
Staten Island Yankees 2 to 0 in what
turned out to be an exciting game.
The trip brought back memories
of “Da Brooklyn Bums” and Ebbetts
Field. It is an annual Shields ritual
which will hopefully go on for years
to come.
On Monday, August 25, the
Shields held their annual barbecue
in the tennis pavilion. There was
an abundance of food and drink,
and “Fifties” music wafted out over
the bocce, tennis, and shuffleboard
courts much to everyone’s enjoyment.
Janice from Autism Speaks was
an invited guest, and was presented
with a Shields donation in the form
of a check for $2,000.00 by Al Pascarella, Buddy Migner, and Vince
Ricciardi. Members of the Shields
will also be participating in the charity’s annual walk in Long Branch on
October 11.

We have enjoyed a variety of
programs recently. These have included a camp day, a spoof of court
cases, and the wonderful singing of
Shlomo Haviv.
We will be having our annual
break the fast on Saturday evening
October 4. We wish everyone who
celebrates, a happy and healthy
New Year, and hope for peace in
the world.
Please join us on Sunday morning November 9 for a showing of
the film Hava Nagila. Learn why
this song has become so important
in our culture that it has become the
hallmark of almost every celebration. Hear interviews with Harry
Belafonte, Connie Francis, and Glen
Campbell among others, who comment on this song.
On December 4, we are featuring two outstanding performers who
pay tribute to Bette Midler and Barry
Manilow, or is it that they are Bette
Midler and Barry Manilow. Don’t
miss this entertaining show.
As always our Sunday meetings,
(the doors open at 9:45 AM), include
bagels and cream cheese, egg and
tuna salad, and coffee and cake for
only $4.00 per person. Mark your
calendars so you don’t miss the fun.
Because we order food in advance,
it is necessary to sign up for these
programs no later than a week before
the program. You can do so by calling Isabel Goldfarb or by emailing

your convenience you can pick up a

Performing Arts Club
Part Two
By Debby Wasserman
Bill Jehle is the current president
of PAC. His is an interesting story.
Before he moved to Renaissance,
he had never participated in any
theatrical activity. His wife was the
catalyst. She suggested that they join
the chorus. After two meetings, she
dropped out, and he had found an
avocation.
Around 2008 or so, the Renaissance Advisory Council informally polled the community, asking whether there were particular
activities the residents would enjoy
and participate in. These responses
evolved into a marriage of free
/ low cost entertainment (only a
membership fee of $10.00 yearly),
and a stage for would-be performers
with the sanctioning by the Board
of Trustees of the Performing Arts
Club. The year was 2009. The
first shows took place in 2010. The
shows have evolved over the years
with a time frame that best suited
the directors and the audience: four
productions—one each in May, July,
October and December.
Many people beyond the directors and the people on the stage
work to make these productions
successful. This list is by no means
complete, but it should give the
readers an idea of the broad range
of talents involved.
Sharon Newfield is the official
photographer. Her pictures have
graced the centerfold of the Renaissance Times several times. First,
videos of all productions are made at
a rehearsal about two weeks before
opening night. Joe Cialdella and
Nora Fett are the videographers.
These allow the directors to review
staging and placement. Videos of
actual shows are made at each performance. Rod Tannenholz reviews
all, checks for the best, and then
prepares a final disc as a memento
for all participants.
Believe it or not the actual
production budget for each show
is about $100, not counting refreshments! This includes backdrops, curtains and scenery. Lighting has been
greatly enhanced by the purchase by
Renaissance of spotlights, which are
run by volunteers under the guidance
of the director.
Another aspect of the shows is
ticket distribution. The system of
ranking your selections and appearing at the assigned time and date has
greatly streamlined this operation.
When you come for tickets your
name is checked against your ranking and you are assigned a number
(like a deli!). When your number is
called you are issued tickets based
on a seating chart. This entire operation, from ticket creation, to labeling
the aisles, to ticket distribution, is
also run by volunteers.
As you can see, much behind the
scenes work goes into the production. All that is required of the audience is that they show up and enjoy
the hard work of others.
Originally this article was to
have included two major players in
PAC, Salvina Tannenholz and Bill
Jehle. After speaking with both of
them, I realized I could not do justice
to both in one article. So this month
it is Bill, next month Salvina.

The second production of the
Performing Arts Club (PAC) season
hit one out of the park with the July
19 and 20 performances of Your Hit
Parade.
Based upon the popular 1950’s
TV show of the same name, many
of the top tunes of that decade were
sung and staged brilliantly by director Phyllis Zauberman, and a large
and exceptionally talented cast. With
singers and dancers performing in
front of a beautiful backdrop and
dazzling curtains, the audiences
were treated to a professional level
of exceptional sights and performances.
The show began with a
video of the opening of the original
TV show. Nostalgia was evoked
even further with the clever live
recreations of the circle logo for
the show, in which the performers’
faces appeared in the center as they
each was introduced, and also the
authentic costume for the Lucky
Strike cigarette girl.
Other treats for everyone were
the hilarious comedic scenes given
to the “Standing on the Corner” and
“Love and Marriage” numbers. Prehistoric costumes, along with a large
scenic flat of a cave as a background
complemented the first number, and
hillbilly costumes and props worked
beautifully for the second. Great
work by everyone involved.
Speaking of costumes, the
dancers in the “Istanbul” number
wore beautiful, colorful harem outfits that worked perfectly with their
outstanding dance routine.
In fact, every song in the production was a gem. The audiences
seemed to remember them all, and
appeared to be barely restraining
themselves from singing along with
each talented performer’s version of
these great hits.
Director Phyllis Zauberman,
aided by her own amazing singing,
created a beautiful, fast-paced and
unforgettable show that fully earned
the standing ovations received at
each performance.Afterwards, the
always delicious coffee and desserts
served at PAC productions were
worthy of another ovation.
All in all, Your Hit Parade was
another giant step forward in PAC’s
ever growing list of magnificent
productions. Please do yourselves
a favor and be sure to catch their
upcoming productions: October 18
and 19 – Famous Stars directed by
Joe Cagnini; and December 20 and
21 – 007 James Bond Movie Songs
directed by Salvina.

By Ruth and Martin Denman
For the past ten years, there has
been a meeting of music lovers every
Monday night at the home of Ruth
and Martin Denman.
At these meetings, a video of
an opera with English subtitles or
a Broadway musical is shown preceded by a little discussion of the
subject to be shown. Refreshments
are served during intermission. The
evenings last about two and one half
to three hours and a good time is had
by all. There is no admission charge
and all are welcome.
If you are interested in attending
one of these meetings, please contact
Ruth or Martin. No prior knowledge
of opera is necessary. We hope to see
you soon.
The Italian American Club
By Jean Sutera
Surprisingly, our last meeting
was changed to Tuesday, September
2. Conflicting dates warranted having our meeting on that night. The
Magic Club performed to the delight
of the good crowd in attendance.
We were surprised with a delicious
cheesecake dessert, thanks to Marlene Governale and staff.
Sign-ups for the Columbus Day
parade were conducted and a few
good people signed up for October
12 in Seaside Heights. We need more
people for that event. You can call
Joe Spina to sign-up.
Our next meeting will be our
Columbus Day Party in the ballroom. That party has been sold out.
The Christmas Party will be held
on December 4 at the Clarion Hotel
in Toms River. That event has also
been sold out
Ann Marie Lieto announced
that she would need cookies, holiday cards and handmade knitted or
crochet items for the holiday party
at AristaCare (formerly Manchester
Manor), on Tuesday, December 2.
She will be at the November meeting
to accept items. You may call her if
you will not be at the meeting.

THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
No matter what garden style appeals to you, a successful landscape
requires the use of basic design principles. Knowing these principles and
how to use them well will enable you to create the look and feeling you
want.
For over 13 years, we’ve built our family business on relationships and
continue to lead the Landscape Industry in innovation and quality.
