Husky Hockey in Hartford... The Huskies will call
the XL Center located in the heart of downtown Hartford home for 11 games this season. The venue, formerly known as the Hartford Civic Center,
just completed a renovation project that
included upgrades to the locker rooms, new
video boards and new concourse features
including luxury seating among other improvements. The
historic building celebrates its 40th birthday this year, and
also serves as the home ice for the Hartford Wolfpack of
the American Hockey League (AHL). Opened in 1975,
the building’s history is built on the ice, serving as the
home to the NHL’s Hartford Whalers from 1975 through 1997.
Traveling the Nutmeg State... The Huskies will play games
in three different Connecticut arenas this season. In addition to the
11 games scheduled for the XL Center, UConn will play five times
at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. The Huskies will

in-state rival Quinnipiac at Webster Bank Arena on October 21st then return
to the venue for the Frozen Holiday Classic in late December with Union,
UMass Lowell and fellow Constitution State opponent Sacred Heart. The
Huskies and Pioneers will also face-off in a game to be played at The Taft
School in Watertown.
Husky NHL Draft Picks... Last season, defenseman Ryan Segalla
became the first player in program history to be selected in the NHL Entry
Draft when he was taken in the fourth round (119th overall) of the 2013
Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Heading into this season, Coach Cavanaugh and his staff have added two more NHL draft picks to the program
in freshman defensman David Drake and future Husky defenseman Miles
Gendron. Drake, like Segalla, was taken in the 2013 NHL Draft, selected
by the Philadelphia Flyers in the seventh round (192nd overall). In this
past June’s NHL Entry Draft, Gendron was picked in the third round, 70th
overall, by the Ottawa Senators. Gendron is committed to UConn and will
join the Huskies in 2015-16. The Huskies have had just one player in their
history play in the NHL in Todd Krygier (1984-88). Krygier was drafted
by the Hartford Whalers in the 1988 supplemental draft and had stints with
the Whale, Washington Capitals and Anaheim Ducks. Former Husky Cole
Schneider (2010-12) signed a two-year entry level
deal with the Ottawa Senators at the end of his
sophomore season and is entering his fourth season with the Binghamton Senators (AHL).
Huskies Featured on Hockey East TV Package... The Huskies
will be featured twice this season as part of Hockey East’s television package
with NESN and NBCSN. Hockey East and NBCSN will broadcast over 25
games this season while it was announced on Wednesday that NESN will
carry 19 games in 2014-15. The Huskies will make their national television debut this season when they head to the University of Notre Dame
on Friday, January 16th. The Huskies and Fighting Irish will take the ice in
front of a national TV audience on NBCSN. The NESN package will carry
UConn’s January 21st match-up with the University of New Hampshire
from the Whittemore Center. The Huskies will also be televised in games
at Merrimack (WBIN/ESPN3), Maine (Fox College Sports/WVII Bangor/
WPME Portland) and at Providence (Cox Sports on OSN).
Raycroft Joins Coaching Staff... Head Coach Mike Cavanaugh
announced that former NHL goaltender Andrew Raycroft has joined the
coaching staff for the 2014-15 season. Raycroft was originally drafted by
the Boston Bruins in 1998 and made his NHL debut in the 2000-2001
season. During his first full season in 2003-04, Raycroft compiled a 29-18-9
record consisting of a 2.05 goals against average, a .926 save percentage, and
had three shutouts. That season’s performance earned Raycroft the Calder
Memorial Trophy, as the league rookie of the year. Raycroft would also play
with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, and
Dallas Stars. In 2012, Raycroft signed with Italian Serie A club, Milano Rossoblu. Following that he played with IF Bjorkloven before announcing his
retirement from professional hockey.

UConn Hockey Game Notes - Game 4 vs. Quinnipiac
Head Coach Mike Cavanaugh
2nd Season - Record at UConn: 18-16-5 / Career Record: Same
Head Coach Mike Cavanaugh begins his second season at the helm of the UConn men’s ice hockey
program and will guide UConn through its inaugural season in the high profile Hockey East conference this year. On May 8, 2013, Cavanaugh was named the fourth head men’s hockey coach in UConn
history dating back to the inception of the program in 1960.
During his first season as head coach, Cavanaugh led the Huskies through their final season in the
Atlantic Hockey Association with a .611 winning percentage and 15-9-3 record in the conference, tying
them for third place in the standings with Air Force. Overall, the Huskies finished with an 18-14-4 record, posting consecutive winning seasons for just the second time in the program’s Division I history (1998-present) and capping
off the program’s best four-year Division I stretch with 68 wins (2010-11 through 2013-2014).
The Huskies’ defense was tops in Atlantic Hockey in 2013-14, allowing a league-low 2.39 goals per game and finishing with an 82.5
penalty killing percentage. UConn’s 15 league wins matched the AHA win total during the 2006-07 campaign for most in program
history. The season’s highlight was the Huskies first-ever win against a top-10 nationally-ranked team when they dealt future
Hockey East foe and #9 ranked Providence College a 3-2 defeat at Schneider Arena.
Off the ice, Cavanaugh forged a partnership with the Hartford Police Activities League (PAL), a non-profit unit with the Hartford
Police Department, as a way to encourage community service within the men’s ice hockey team. PAL offers inner city youth recreational and educational activities that provide a welcome alternative to violence, gang membership, truancy and substance abuse.
The men’s ice hockey team regularly participates in pick up street hockey and ice hockey games with youth who attend the after
school program in Hartford.
Prior to arriving in Storrs, Cavanaugh spent 18 seasons at Boston College on legendary head coach Jerry York’s coaching staff.
During his time at BC, he helped guide the Eagles to four national titles (2001, 2008, 2010 and 2012) in addition to nine Hockey
East Tournament championships, six league regular-season titles and 10 Frozen Four appearances.
During his tenure at Boston College, Cavanaugh was vital in establishing a decade-strong winning culture for the program in the
Hockey East. As one of the nation’s premier recruiters, Cavanaugh saw his efforts produce more than 30 National Hockey League
players, two Hobey Baker Award recipients (Johnny Gaudreau, 2014; Mike Mottau, 2000), 22 All-Americans and two USA Hockey
College Players of the Year (Mottau, 2000 and Nathan Gerbe, 2008) in his 18 seasons - the last nine as associate head coach.
He was named the winner of the 2013 Terry Flanagan Award by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). The Flanagan
Award is given annually to honor an assistant coach’s career body of work in the college game.
In addition to his on-ice achievements, Cavanaugh was highly involved in the greater Boston community. He spearheaded an
academic mentoring program with St. Columbkille Partnership School, a local elementary school where 19 different languages
are spoken and many students are receiving financial support. Boston College players are matched with fifth graders for academic
mentoring that often turns into life mentoring. Cavanaugh also founded and led the coordination of the Annual BC Race to Educate, a 5k road race and 1k kid’s fun run held in the spring. The race has raised over $130,000 in just two years for St. Columbkille’s that has been put toward financial aid, a music program and staffing at the school.
A 1990 graduate of Bowdoin College, Cavanaugh was a three-year ice hockey letterman for the Polar Bears. He served as team
captain in 1989-90. Cavanaugh also captained and played wide receiver on the school’s football team. He is a graduate of North
Andover High School, where he played hockey.
Upon his graduation from Bowdoin, Cavanaugh spent one year in London serving as player/coach of the Richmond Ice Hockey
Club. He returned to the United States and was the assistant hockey coach at the Belmont Hill School for the 1991-92 season. From
there, he joined Jerry York’s staff at Bowling Green from 1992-93. While at BGSU, Cavanaugh earned a master’s degree in sports
management.
Prior to coming to Boston College in 1995-96, Cavanaugh spent two
Coaching Career
years as an assistant coach at Dartmouth College (1993-95). He was
promoted to associate head coach at BC prior to the 2004-05 season. YearSchool
