SAINT LUKE CHURCH

SAINT LUKE CHURCH
October 19, 2014
Welcome
A warm welcome to all who gather in the name of Christ
this morning. If you are looking for a church home, we hope
you will consider Saint Luke.
All baptized Christians are welcome at the Lord’s table. We all need
what only Christ can give.
For your convenience, there are large print copies of the Sunday bulletin
and individual sound enhancement devices.
The wheelchair accessible entrance is located on Greenview Avenue and the
wheelchair accessible lavatory is off the left side of the church.
A section for parents with very young children is located in the back of the
church. Rocking chairs, floor cushions and children’s booster seats may be found in
that area. In the very front of the church is a row of child-sized chairs for
children who want to see the action up close. Parents may sit with them or in
the pew behind. Church Activity Bags with books and coloring materials for
the very young are available from the ushers. A closed circuit television carrying
the service and a PreSchool play area is available to parents and children in a
classroom (upstairs from church lobby) when attention spans have reached
their limit.
Free parking is available in the parking garage behind the church. Enter
from Melrose Ave., take the ticket from the machine (if the gates are down}
and see an usher for a free pass out of the garage.
Please let the ushers know if there is anything else they can do to assist
your worship experience.
Baptized in Christ
We welcome into the family of God, Cooper Brasky Stabb baptized into
the faith this morning. May Cooper grow in grace and the knowledge of our
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Today
SAINT LUKE
Church
This morning we observe the Day of Saint Luke, a celebration in which we
remember the saint for whom our parish was named. Saint Luke was the
author of both the Gospel of Saint Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. According
to tradition, he was a physician. Indeed his writings offer many examples of
the concern Jesus had for healing, both in body and in mind. He is also
remembered as an artist and is honored as a patron of artists as well. Thus
on his feast day, we celebrate the gifts of the Gospel ministry, in our prayers
we remember by name those who continue in his tradition by sharing their
gifts of healing.

Saint Luke Day
Postlude: Fantasy in C
Today the congregation marks the Day of Saint Luke.

Saint Luke was an evangelist, the writer of the Gospel

physician. Indeed his Gospel records many instances of
healing. To commemorate his witness, today in the
prayers at the 10:30 a.m. service, we remember by name
health care providers and those individuals who practice the healing
ministry, following in the footsteps of our patron saint.

All Saints, Our Saints – November 1
On Saturday, November 1, 2014, Saint Luke Church, in cooperation with
Saint Luke Cemetery, will observe All Souls’ Day as part of our celebration
of All Saints Day 2014.
At 11:00 a.m., members and friends of the congregation will gather in the
cemetery chapel to remember their loved ones who have died in the faith
and say prayers at their graves.
After the chapel service, participants will move in procession to the graves,
stopping at each grave for prayer and blessing and then moving on to the
next. In this fashion we affirm our unity even now with the Church
Triumphant. (If you are unable to walk in the procession, you will be met at
the grave.)
In addition to the prayers, a lighted memorial candle may be placed on a
grave. These candles will burn for approximately five days and then be
removed by the cemetery staff to be saved for next year’s observance.
It is not necessary to place a candle at a grave. This is a matter of personal
taste and tradition. If you elect to do so the memorial light will be provided
for you at cost and will become the property of Saint Luke Cemetery.
Following the service, a special luncheon will be held at the White Eagle,
6845 N Milwaukee Ave. Cost for the luncheon is $20 per person;
reservations should be made before October 31 by calling the Church
Office at 773.472.3383.
If you would like to participate in this special event, please return the form
below to the Church Office.
