Children’s Theater coming to Sturgis
Dakota Players returns to Sturgis for another week of putting together a
show with our students. We’ve decided to try it in September this year
instead of January. Come join in the fun!!
Our show this year will be “Space School Musical” The description of it is
as follows: “Hannah is trying to finish her science project - a model of the
solar system. But there’s a problem: it’s due tomorrow, she’s not finished
yet, and it’s past her bedtime. How will she get it done? With a little help
from her friends – the most talented troupe in the Milky Way!
Join Hannah on a trip through the solar system in this ultra-cool edu-tainment “hip-hopera” that is out of this
world! Move and groove along with the planets, moons, meteors, comets, asteroids and even some rockin’
scientists as they sing, dance and serve up the freshest facts in the galaxy.
Auditions will be held Monday, September 22nd, at 3:30pm in the Sturgis Elementary School Gym. All
students (home-schooled as well) in the Sturgis and Whitewood area are welcome to audition. You don’t need
to bring anything with you except a smile and your wonderful personality. If you’re an older student (middle
school or high school) and you’d be interested in helping with the technical part of the show please go to tryouts
and let them know that as well. Rehearsals will be held every day that week from approx. 3:30-8:00pm. You
will need to be at each and every rehearsal, so please make sure you have a clear schedule that week.
Performances will be Friday, September 26th and Saturday, September 27th at 7:00pm each evening in the
Sturgis Community Center Theater. Tickets for the show are $6 for adults and $3 for students. Children 5 and
under are free.
Founded in 1999 as the Children’s Theatre Company of South Dakota, Dakota Players
provides access to quality theatre experiences for children as well as professional work
opportunities in South Dakota for theatre artists. They’ve been happy to expand their
mission beyond South Dakota’s borders to Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota. In 2010 the
Children’s Theatre Company of South Dakota changed their name to Dakota Players.
Their goal is to educate students in the theatre experience starting in kindergarten and
continuing through high school. All of their scripts are original musical productions
written and designed by Midwestern artists.
Arts education has been proven to develop creativity and problem solving skills. Their programs are designed
to inform and educate people about the value of the arts. The arts can inspire creativity, celebrate traditions,
help reconcile differences, provide recreation, and contribute to the economic and social development of whole
communities. This experience will give students the opportunity to learn better concentration, coordination
and communication skills, as well as greater self-confidence and poise. It is their desire to teach and delight
children, taking them to that wonderful place where magic, imagination, and reality come together.

Writing Workshop Shuns Exotic Inspiration
Attending a writer’s conference or retreat can be a great way to get the creative juices
flowing. Or maybe an online writing degree could be just the thing to take your writing
to the next level. But those can cost a lot of money or be in a far off place or both. And
when it comes right down to it all they really do is give you a reason and time to write.
According to writer Ken Steinken, both of those are available right where you live. You
just have to find ways to make yourself do them.
Steinken will lead a writing workshop called “Exploring Home,” from 9:00am to noon
on Saturday, September 13 at the Sturgis Public Library. A mid morning coffee and snack
break will be provided by the Sturgis Area Arts council. Participants are invited to bring
a sack lunch and stick around after Ken has completed his portion of the workshop just to
visit and compare notes and ideas with local writers.
The workshop, sponsored by the South Dakota Humanities Council, helps writers find inspiration no matter
where they have landed in life. “It’s a matter of having some goals, keeping yourself on track and realizing that
no matter where you are you have what you need to be a writer,” said Steinken, who prodded, coached and
inspired hundreds of writing students during his two decades of teaching at Stevens High School in Rapid City.
“When students started my classes many of them were convinced that they couldn’t write. But it was more a
question of they didn’t know what to write,” said Steinken.
“So I helped them find things they were interested in to write about. And usually what got the writing flowing
was something they knew well because it was part of their lives. Things like cars, hunting, losing a loved one,
dealing with family dynamics or working through life’s difficulties and traumas.”
Through advice and activities Steinken challenges people to become more observant of what’s going on around
them and within them and to be more aware of what’s happening in their lives no matter where they call home.
Writing about topics close to home and far away, Steinken’s work has appeared in books, newspapers,
magazines and websites like KOTA’s MyTown, Rapid City Journal, Indian Country Today, South Dakota
Magazine, High Country News, Houston Post, Reader’s Digest and Toronto Globe and Mail. He has an MFA in
Creative Writing from the University of Wyoming.

Black Hills Art Association ~ Fall Art Show
The Black Hills Art Association will be holding their annual Fall Art Show and Sale on Saturday, September
27th, from 10:00am until 4:00pm and again on Sunday, September 28th, from 10:00am until 3:00pm at Hudson
Hall (located at 222 W. Hudson Street) in Spearfish.
Come enjoy a variety of artwork by local artists of the Northern Black Hills and surrounding area. There is no
admission fee to this family friendly event. Free coffee & cookies all day! There will be a raffle of four pieces
of artwork and a Silent Auction of art prints & other items of interest.

Armchair Travelers
History at
High Noon
As we begin a new season of History at High Noon it is good to
remember all the programs presented by so many. Programs from our
good neighbors out in Meade and Lawrence counties and many family
histories. And about places now long gone such as Wiggs Lunch, St.
Martin’s Academy, the Titan baseball team and how Main Street used to
look. Programs have been taped since 2002 and are being made available
on the Sturgis Public Library’s website. So, many thanks to all who
come to listen and share programs and a special thanks to the library staff
for giving us a home.
Zona Vig will be back on Friday, October 17 at noon with “Opal-Chapter
Two”. Chapter One was great fun and we learned a lot from Zona’s
presentation, so we look forward to learning even more from her about
Opal, SD.
History at High Noon meets the third Friday of the month at noon in the
program room of the Sturgis Public Library. There is always a cup of
coffee and we invite you to bring your lunch if you wish. Thanks again
to all our loyal followers for your interest-it keeps this program alive. As
always, the committee welcomes ideas, so if you would like to present a
program or have an idea for one please give a call to Diana Hayes, Vivian
Herbst, Bonnie Lange, Rosalee Johnson or Dode Lee.

Artists of the Month
Kathy Kelley is our Artist of the
Month for October. She says
- “Hi, this is Kathy Kelley and I
am honored to be the artist for the
month of October. My husband
Mike and I have lived in Sturgis
for the past 15 years in the home
where he was raised. I have
worked at Massa Berry Clinic for
almost 8 years now.
Photography involving animals
and scenery is a favorite pastime,
along with bicycling (you may
have seen me around town).
We just returned from a 17 day
vacation to Colorado, jeeping
the mountain trails, riding the
Silverton to Durango narrow
gauge railroad, and snapping
pictures of moose, elk, big
horns, marmots, and scenery. We
normally visit the Oregon coast
once a year also, loving the beach
and the sunsets, all wonderful
opportunities to lug the cameras
along and take pictures.”
All of her work is for sale.

Kathy Sigle is our Artist of the Month for
September. Art has always played an important
part in Kathys’ life. She can remember when
at only 6 years old wanting to enter a coloring
contest. She was so excited when she won!
Always drawing during her school years, she
especially enjoyed the time when she worked
in pencil on an old woman’s face. Kathy didn’t
know the woman but was intrigued by all of her
character and wrinkles. When she was in high
school she sold her first drawing. It was a pen and
ink of a zebra and a teacher bought it.
While preparing for college her dad asked what she wanted to do as a
career and Kathy said “All I ever wanted to be was an Artist”. She worked
for another 10 years in pencil and colored pencil until her mom, who is
also an artist, suggested she try watercolor. They worked together on one
small painting and that is all it took. Wow! Watercolor was fun!! Now,
Kathy specializes in watercolor paintings of western scenes and with 20+
years of painting experience, Kathy produces realistic, detailed pieces
through her layering techniques and her exceptional use of color and
light. Kathy’s love of the western way of life has inspired her to create
paintings incorporating and combining the quick, loose technique with the
highly detailed renderings that are achievable in
watercolor.
Even now, Kathy realizes the more she works with
watercolors the more she has yet to learn. She has
attended numerous professional workshops and has
also won awards for ‘Best of Show’ and ‘Peoples
Choice’. Her paintings have also had the good
fortune of being in collections around the country.
Kathy hopes you enjoy her artwork as much as she
enjoys painting it. “I’m always excited about what
is next to come.”

October brings lots of music to the Library
Beatle Mania ...
What is jazz?
On Tuesday, October 7th, Dr. Janeen Larsen and her husband, Gary
50 years later
Renner will present a program titled “What Is Jazz” from 5:00-6:30pm
in the library’s program room. Refreshments will be served. Dr. Janeen Larsen is a classically-trained pianist who also performs
and teaches jazz piano. She is the author of the book Jazz Piano: A
Primer for Classical Pianists. In this presentation she will briefly discuss the history and evolution of jazz. She will also demonstrate on the
piano some of the similarities and differences between classical music
and jazz, and will perform examples of the different styles of jazz
improvisation. Dr. Larsen received a Master of Music degree in both
in Piano Performance and Musicology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a PhD in Music Education from the University of
Florida. From 1978-2010 she taught courses in piano, piano pedagogy,
music history, music appreciation and music theory at BHSU. She
is still an active performer, and is also involved in the South Dakota
Music Teachers Association. Larsen will be assisted in this program by bassist Gary Renner, who is the leader of “The Happy Wanderers,”
a ten piece group who have been performing big band and polka dance
music in the region for the last 23 years. Larsen and Renner (who are
married to each other) play jazz and easy listening music regularly at
Roma’s Ristorante in Spearfish, and both are members of the Green
Dolphin Jazz Quartet.
Local attorney Bruce Hubbard
vividly remembers the day the
Beatles hit our shore, and on
Thursday, October 16, he and Paul
Peterson will bring a bit of the
Beatles to Sturgis. This program
will be in the program room at the
library from 5:00-6:30pm.
Bruce recalls watching the Beatles
on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964,
and became an instant fan and
collector. He will share favorite
memories and memorabilia with
the audience. Some of his Beatles
collectibles will also be on display
in the library art display case for the
month of October. Paul Peterson will round out the
program by playing some of his
favorite arrangements of Beatles
songs on guitar. Refreshments will be served.

Halloween Thrills
and Chills
The Black Hills
Storytellers are
teaming up once
again to entertain
us with ghost stories
and macabre
merriment in a
program for adults
and teens.

Sturgis Center for the Arts, (1238 Main
St., on the corner with Third St. The
entrance to Suite 2 is in the back off the
alley.) The event is co-sponsored by the Sturgis

Seraphim Theatrical Entertainment
Seraphim Theatrical Entertainment is
the first and only locally established
theater in Rapid City to offer a full
curriculum of Theater education classes
in addition to theatrical productions.

Can you imagine our community without public art or
community concerts? Can you imagine our community
without plays or musicals? Well, neither can we. Your
annual membership in SAAC continues to be an important
tool for support of the Sturgis Area Arts Council and we are
asking your to renew it for 2015 (or join anew if you haven’t
already)
As a member of the Arts Council, you are welcome to attend
all monthly meetings (usually held the 2nd Thursday of
the month at 7:00pm in Library/City Hall meeting room).
As a member YOU HAVE A VOTE in what we do. In
addition, your membership dollars are TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
Beginning October 1st, your payment counts toward your
2015 membership and continues (or starts) your subscription
to the Arts Council Newsletter (on a bi-monthly basis) as well
as monthly postcards.
Each year the Sturgis Arts Council continues to provide a
plethora of art to our community: Children’s Theater in
the school; Artists in the School; Art Exhibits at the Public
Library; Christmas and Easter community concerts; winter
and summer theater plays and musicals; History at High
Noon monthly presentations by local community members on
local history; book discussions led by local historians, authors
and/or college professors; Annual Halloween storytelling
by the Black Hills Storytellers; etc. etc. etc. Many of these
events and projects are FREE to the residents of the area!
Your membership dollars provide us with an Arts Coordinator
position and you with the newsletter, postcard reminders,

the heART of our community and your membership support
