I argued that he had both drug and alcohol issues and it would do him no good to continue to be subsidized by compliant relatives. She said everybody deserved one more chance and what would it hurt us to give him a place to live for a while. He could do some handyman tasks around the house to help pay for his keep. I eventually gave in, as I usually do with Kate. All the while having real reservations about the proposed tenant. Charley is a likeable young man, affable and full of fun when he is far enough past his addiction to be fun. He is also good looking, which I think is detrimental to him as he leans on women and gets them to support his habits. He moved in one Sunday and was relieved when we did not expect him to go to church. He took the small bedroom and seemed content to get settled for the rest of the day. We took him to play Bingo that evening and he was popular and enjoyed himself. The next day Kate had small jobs lined up for him, which he performed cheerfully although not too well, in my opinion. “He needs a job,” I said. “Not just handyman stuff, but a real job where he is responsible and gets paid.” “Oh, relax,” said my sister. “You are just nervous having him around. What is it? Do you think he is going to steal the silver?” I had to admit my nervousness. “But he eats an awful lot,” I complained since I was doing the cooking. “And he doesn’t clean up after himself.” “Well neither do I,” said Kate, “and you haven’t thrown me out yet.” The argument went on for three more days, and when the weekend rolled around I was ready to get out of the house and do something fun. We went to a casino where we could gamble, eat and play Bingo. It was a great idea and all three of us were having fun when Charley got caught up in watching the overseers of the big games. He was fascinated and motioned us to go ahead and do whatever, he would be fine just watching. We tried to pull him into a Bingo session later but he would not be budged. He was taken up with the big games. We had an uproarious session of Bingo and even won once each, but when we came back down to earth, Charley was nowhere to be found. I finally asked a worker and she said she had seen him talking with the floor manager. We hunted down his office and found Charley in deep conversation with him. He broke off with, “Well, I guess I will see you tomorrow.” And came with us to the car. “What was that all about?” asked Kate. Charley seemed a little dazed. “I guess I’ve got a job or at least a trial run. Mr. Ordu saw me watching the games and began talking to me about my interest. I told him I was very interested in becoming a dealer or something that would keep me on the floor.” Charley pulled at his ear and continued, “I told him about my problems with drugs and alcohol and how I was trying to rehabilitate myself. He seemed genuinely interested and offered to hire me as a trainee. He made it clear there would be no drinking or drugging even in off hours. He also said I could live upstairs for the time being if I wanted.” None of us spoke for a bit, then Charley went on, “It all seems too good to be true— to have a job where I can learn a real skill and get paid in the bargain.” “Oh, yes, and there’s one more thing— I can get out of your hair.” The BINGO BUGLE $100 MONTHLY GIVEAWAY! I bought several kaleidoscopes and peered through them, but I saw only monsters, aliens and scary people! It was a horrid dream and I’m glad I woke up when I did. I am afraid to dream this dream again. What can I do to stop it? I still miss them. Lately, I have been dreaming of them doing daily things with me like grocery shopping, washing clothes in a Laundromat (even though we have appliances in my home) and doing errands in town. They aren’t giving me advice, they are just present. I am strangely comforted by this. What do you think? Abby K., St. Paul, Minnesota Dear Abby, Dreams such as yours are extremely common and they are often comforting to the dreamer as you have said yours is. In the many years I have interpreted dreams I am convinced that dreams such as yours are a way for past loved ones to assure their living loved ones that everything is fine where they are. Thank you for sharing. —Dream Lady Dear Nicky, The hundreds of people around you signify unknown parts of you. The kaleidoscope says you will expect many changes in your life. The monsters tell me you are not sure about what is right for you. You are pulled in many directions. Do not rely on the advice of others whom you do not know well. Trust your instincts. —Dream Lady Dear Dream Lady, What does it mean if I regularly dream of lions and snakes? Shorty in North Hollywood, California Dear Shorty, Lions can signify business leadership; snakes symbolize deceitfulness. Your dream is telling you to use caution in your business dealings. —Dream Lady Readers: Please mail your dreams to Dream Lady, P.O. Box 414, Entiat WA 98822. Send an SASE if you would like a personal reply before publication. Not all dreams are published. Page 7; Bingo Bugle (Nevada) October 2014 EACH FOUND $500 TREASURE! Includes: Lucky Troll Hallowee n Doll 2 Bingo Delight Ghost Daubers and 5 Bingo Bully Dauber s CashBallupdates.com Bingo is an international game With all the horrible things going on around the world, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that we are so lucky to live in America. For those of us who play Bingo a lot, it’s nearly impossible to imagine a world in which we would not only NOT get to play, but would be fighting just to stay alive. For most of us, playing Bingo is a great “leisure-time” activity. Thank God we HAVE leisure time. Much of the world does not. Much of the world is in turmoil and strife and dealing with disease. Much of the rest of the world is simply struggling just to survive! The next time you go to a Bingo hall and finally sit down—after getting your cards or machine, your food and soft drinks—look around. Look at the familiar faces and the new ones. Notice the Bingo equipment, the tote boards on the wall, the monitors, the speak- ers and ... most importantly…the men and women who are there every day for YOU. Bingo does not work without the oftenunderpaid people who work at the Bingo halls. One other thought, as we are in the final quarter of 2014: Everyone loves Bingo. I play every Monday night at a hotel complex in Palm Springs, California. The games are free. The prizes are small, except for the final cover-all game for which you can win a $50 food certificate from the hotel. The crowd is the most interesting thing. People from all over the world are in the hotel and many join us. Whether they are from Belgium or Brazil they KNOW how to play. Bingo is international. I didn’t really realize that until I saw all the people from around the world who were playing with me…and winning! Just as English is slowly becoming the universal language of the globe, Bingo is becoming a universal past-time…a great game that is understood by just about everyone. It’s always fun when the Bingo host asks if there is anyone in the room who needs the rules of Bingo explained. No one ever raises his or her hand. Right now look around your hall. Breathe deeply. And say a little prayer of thanks that we are able to spend time with the game we love the best. Bingo can be the source of special memories. It can be the source of new friends. It can be the source of endless hours of relaxation and exercise for the mind…whether we win or not. Just being there is what is most important. The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter. —Carol Bishop Hipps Can there be anything more gorgeous than trees with their leaves flaming as they stand solemnly at attention before the onset of winter’s chill? As a child I learned to appreciate what each season brings; as an adult I measure my passing years by the swift return of each spring, summer, fall, and winter. With fall however comes one tradition that I hate and that is Daylight Savings Time. Losing an hour then regaining it in the spring is a pain in my big patoot, but I have a solution. Move clocks forward one half hour on November 2 this year and never change it again. In olden times in England, October was called Winmonth? Don’t you love it even though it doesn’t mean the obvious, Win Month? It actually stands for Wine Month, but hey, either would work for me. Having a glass of wine and winning at bingo is a treat I can appreciate any season. Of course, October also means trick or treaters will come knock, knock, knocking on our doors. This tradition was recorded in Scotland at Halloween as early as 1895. One big difference is that the Scottish kiddies carried lanterns Milagros Pebenito recently won a $10,518 Cash Ball at the 9 pm session at Palace Station. Bingo agent, Just Kay read off the winning numbers. made out of scooped out turnips. In Mexico children go door to door and ask ¿me da mi calaverita? when the doors are opened. A calaverita is a little skull made of sugar or chocolate. When I was growing up, trick or treat night sometimes involved tipping over outhouses and always the soaping of a window or two. Not that Nancy Nice, that would be me, ever did those things. Did you know that candy sales average about $2 billion a year and, not surprisingly, Halloween is the largest candy purchasing holiday? More than 35 million pounds of candy corn are produced every year and that equates to nearly 9 billion pieces; enough to circle the moon nearly four times if laid endto- end. M&Ms, named after their creators Myers & Murie, are the most popular candy and they come in twenty-five colors. Every year Robert, my husband, buys bags and bags of candy for Beggars Night. Last year we had less than ten little urchins stop by. He tells me he was once a Boy Scout and he has to be prepared. Yeah right. Does the term sugarholic come to mind? I’ve been reading about superstitions lately. One stated that if you want to get unexpected money, go outside under the full moon; open your pocket or wallet and say nine times aloud, fill it up. Within a few days unexpected money will be yours. One explanation of this superstition is that the ancients believed that the moon is made of silver and therefore has the power to attract money. The bigger and fuller the moon, the more power it has to attract. The full moon this year is October 8th at 10:51p.m.—so plan on being outside and trying your luck. Or, if that date has passed then try next month’s full moon— which comes November 6th. And by full moon, I don’t mean baring your butt to the neighbors. That’s a tradition of an entirely different kind. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. FOIL-WRAPPED WHOLE FISH Pumpkin Lovers Unite Although we often think of pumpkins in terms of pie or Halloween decorations, pumpkins and pumpkin plants are more versatile than most people think. Pumpkin greens can be cooked and eaten like spinach or collard greens. Seeds can be roasted plain, salted or with flavorings added. Pumpkin flowers also are edible. The flesh of the pumpkin can be used in a variety of cooked dishes as a good source of vitamins K and A, magnesium, fiber and potassium. Vitamin A helps maintain eye health, potassium helps maintain healthy blood pressure, and vitamin K and magnesium work together with calcium and vitamin D to build and maintain strong bones. Pumpkins also provide vitamin C, folic acid, pantothenic acid and copper. When choosing a pumpkin for eating, select varieties bred for flavor, known as pie or sweet pumpkins. These usually are smaller, sweeter and have more pulp than the types used for jack-o-lanterns. However, the larger, more watery decorative pumpkins also can be eaten. When using a pumpkin for both decoration and food, keep it safe to eat by drawing on it with non-toxic paint or markers instead of carving it. Pumpkin can be canned, frozen or dried for later use. Can pumpkin in chunks—pureed pumpkin is too thick to can safely, and no research-based recipe or procedure has been developed. To freeze, select full-colored mature pumpkins with fine texture. Wash, cut into cooking-size sections and remove seeds. Cook until soft in boiling water, steam, pressure cooker, oven or microwave. Small pumpkins can be pierced and baked whole on a tray in an oven or microwaved until soft. To cool, place pan containing the pumpkin in cold water and stir occasionally. Then remove the pulp from the rind and mash. Package the pumpkin in sealable containers or bags, label and freeze until you’re ready to use it. Page 26; Bingo Bugle (Nevada) October 2014 6 small fish, whole 1/4 lb. butter, melted salt and pepper juice of 3 lemons Baby Bear pumpkins grow to a smaller size. The flesh is good to eat and the shell is convenient to use as a soup bowl. The seeds are partially hulled and are good to use as a snack when roasted. Hooligan pumpkins are quite small but make excellent soup bowls with their flesh carved out. Jack-be-Little pumpkins are palmsize and can last for months out of the sunlight before cooking them into your soup. Sugar pumpkins are generally smaller and have a higher flesh-to-seed-cavity ratio. They are less stringy and more flavorful than most carving pumpkins. For a festive fall touch, serve my recipe for Pumpkin Chowder in a hollowed-out pumpkin shell “soup bowl” or a hollowedout artisan bread bowl. Keep the pumpkin top or bread bowl top as a “lid” to keep the soup warm. Turn carefully and cook until the fish flakes easily. Brush frequently with the marinade. Season with salt and pepper before serving. Serves 6. DONALD’S BARBECUED CORN ON THE COB 12 ears of corn in the husks 2 sticks butter Place the 12 ears of corn in the husks in a pot or container large enough to hold them submerged in water. Difficulty this month: ★★★ ★ Moderate ★★ Challenging ★★★ HOO BOY! HOW TO PLAY: Read the list of words. Look at the puzzle. You’ll find these words in all directions-horizontally, vertically, diagonally, backwards. Draw a circle around each letter of a word found in the puzzle, then strike it off the list. Circling it will show a letter has been used but will leave it visible should it also form part of another word. Find the big words first. When letters of all listed words are circled, you’ll have the given number of letters left over. They’ll spell out your MAGICWORD. Older Diabetics ■ Diabetic super foods Dear Savvy Senior, My 62-year-old husband was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. As the cook in the family, I’m interested in finding out the best diabetic foods that he should now be eating, and where I can put my hands on some good diabetic cookbooks. What can you tell me? Diabetic Caretaker Dear Caretaker, Eating healthy is important for everyone, but it’s even more important for the nearly 26 million Americans who have diabetes—half of whom are over the age of 60. Here’s what you and your husband should know. Diabetic Super Foods A healthy diet, coupled with regular exercise and medication (if needed) are the keys to keeping your husband’s blood sugar under control. To help meet your husband’s new dietary needs, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) offers a list of top 10 super foods for type 1 and type 2 diabetics. These are foods that contain nutrients that are vitally important to people with diabetes, such as calcium, potassium, magnesium and vitamins A, C and E. They’re also high in fiber which will help your husband feel full longer and keep his glycemic index low so his blood sugar won’t spike. And, they’ll help keep his blood pressure and cholesterol in check, which are also critical for diabetics. Here’s what they recommend he eat plenty of. Beans: Kidney, pinto, navy, black and other types of beans are rich in nutrients and high in soluble fiber, which will keep his blood sugar steady and can help lower his cholesterol. Dark green leafy vegetables: Spinach, collard greens, mustard greens, kale and other dark, leafy green veggies are nutrientdense, low in calories and carbohydrates. More Information For additional information on healthy food choices for diabetics, including hundreds of free recipes, visit the ADA Web site at diabetes.org—click on “Food & Fitness,” or call 800-342-2383 (press option #4) and ask them to mail you a copy of their free booklet What Can I Eat? The ADA also offers a wide variety of diabetic cookbooks that you can purchase through their online store at shopdiabetes.org or 800-232-6455. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of The Savvy Senior book. Decatur Blvd. at West Oakey 877-0087 DECATUR Your husband can’t eat too much of these. Citrus fruits: Grapefruit, oranges and other citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C, which helps heart health. Stick to whole fruits instead of juice. Fiber in whole fruit slows sugar absorption so your husband will get the citrus fruit nutrients without sending his blood sugar soaring. Sweet potatoes: High in vitamin A and fiber and low in glycemic index, sweet potatoes won’t raise your husband’s blood sugar at the same level as a regular potato. Berries: Whole, unsweetened blueberries, strawberries and other berries are full of antioxidants, vitamins and fiber. Choose fresh or frozen berries for salads, smoothies or cereal. Tomatoes: Raw or cooked, this low-calorie super food offers vital nutrients like vitamin C, iron and vitamin E. Serve sliced, steamed, broiled or stewed, as a side dish, in salads, soups, casseroles or other dishes. Fish with omega-3 fatty acids: Salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines and albacore tuna are high in omega 3 fatty acids that help both heart health and diabetes. But stay away from the breaded and deep fat fried variety. Whole grains: Pearled barley, oatmeal, breads and other whole-grain foods are high in fiber and contain nutrients such as magnesium, chromium, folate and omega 3 fatty acids. Nuts: An ounce of nuts can go a long way in providing your husband important “healthy fats” along with hunger management. They’re also contain a nice dose of magnesium and fiber, but don’t overdue it. Nuts are high in calories so a small handful each day is enough. Fat-free milk and yogurt: These dairy foods provide the calcium and vitamin D your husband needs, and they’ll also help curb cravings and between-meal snacks. www.fantasticindoorswapmeet.com THE MCDOUGALL John McDougall, MD OPTIMAL HEALTH & MAXIMUM WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM We know changing your life can be difficult. PREDICTORS LUCKY CARD FOR OCTOBER 2014 by Frederick Woodruff astroinquiry.com Explore more at Horoscopes for October 2014 ARIES: Mar. 21-Apr. 20: Temperament and destiny are intertwined. What we share and how we express our creativity has a lot to do with how life begins to shift and change for each of us. With Jupiter in your house of self-expression now is the time to design a new fate. You’re intuitions are correct! Luck is on your side: you’re ready to design a new you. Lucky Days: 6-19 Lucky Numbers: 16-57 TAURUS: Apr. 21-May 21: Home is where the magic happens for you in October. Investigate your ancestry; discover the gifts you’ve inherited from your lineage, and then put those insights into action. The more you investigate your past and then apply those discoveries to your future the more rewarding the present becomes. Lucky Days: 17-26 Lucky Numbers: 23-60 GEMINI: May 22-June 21: It’s not your nature to sit still. There’s so much in life you want to experience and share. Reading and traveling put you right in the middle of your favorite pastimes, but now it’s time to lay the groundwork for your plans to become a first-rate scholar, teacher or speaker. You’ll feel more balanced as you begin to give away as much as you aquire. Lucky Days: 23-27 Lucky Numbers: 19-46 CANCER: June 22-July 22: Why is money always on your mind? Because it symbolizes security and freedom; and with your many moods you need to feel as free as you can to express every facet of your artistic nature. Your chance of increasing your wealth is directly tied to how much risk you take with your creativity. Don’t hold anything back. Give it your best shot! Lucky Days: 6-21 Lucky Numbers: 39-60 LEO: July 23-Aug. 23: Ruled by the Sun, lions are gifted with ‘star quality’ and October is the month to really shine. The catch is Saturn in your house of creative expression—that means you must work twice as hard for half the results. Learn the secrets of investment, how to pace yourself and slowly turn up your wattage. You’ll reach maximum glow in the summer of 2015. Lucky Days: 2-18 Lucky Numbers: 24-68 VIRGO: Aug. 24-Sept. 23: Consider this line from the author John Simone: “The key to wisdom is knowing all the right questions.” This is SCORPIO: Oct. 24-Nov. 22: Your attention keeps moving between trust and doubt. Here’s a way to resolve that: The more you focus on what’s great about your career objectives the less you will fret about not having enough resources to support your dream. You’re a fantastic disciplinarian, use your will and drive to make your dream job come true. The money will follow. Lucky Days: 13-26 Lucky Numbers 17-65 SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 23-Dec. 21: With your ruler in Leo you’ve been given the keys to the kingdom. But these will only work if your efforts involve strong philosophical or spiritual pursuits. Allow your imagination to align with your drive to understand life’s deeper mysteries and watch the doors of perception open wide to undiscovered worlds. Lucky Days: 9-30 Lucky Numbers: 38-47 CAPRICORN: Dec. 22-Jan. 20: By nature you’re a ‘cup half empty’ person. By working with tough discipline you achieve your goals, and it’s why you have so much. But now you must make way for a lighter touch; an emotional transformation that reveals your life’s generosity and benevolence. And the point of this insight? You don’t have to work so hard. Lucky Days: 3-30 Lucky Numbers: 28-65 AQUARIUS: Jan. 21-Feb. 19: Who to pick as your new soul mate or best friend? Ask this question as Jupiter moves through your house of partnerships and opens the door on a new level of love and relating. And take to heart these words from the great Marcel Proust: “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” Lucky Days: 14-26 Lucky Numbers: 22-66 PISCES: Feb. 20-Mar. 20: Your drive for perfection can make you avoid doing the very sort of ordering and system-making that will make your life run smoother and with more beauty and grace.
