Working Papers
• Effects of Nonprofit Competition on Charitable Donations (Job Market Paper)
Abstract: This paper estimates the effect of competition among nonprofit organizations on the charitable donations received by them. The total effect of competition is decomposed into a direct and
an indirect effect. The indirect effect examines the change in donations caused by adjustments in
the fundraising efforts of nonprofits in response to varying degrees of competition. Changes in donations affected by alterations in other nonprofit behavioral aspects due to competition is captured
in the direct effect. The estimation is conducted at the market and nonprofit levels, using a simple
instrumental variable regression approach on US nonprofit tax return data. The key finding of this
paper is that aggregate donations by all donors in a market increases, both directly and indirectly,
due to greater nonprofit competition. Yet, at the nonprofit level the direct and indirect effects are
negative. Increased competition decreases the average charitable donations received by a nonprofit.
The results are applied to the evaluation of policies that regulate the number of nonprofits in a
market and the consequences of nonprofit mergers.
• Lottery vs Voluntary Contributions: Mechanisms for the Provision of Threshold Public Goods
(with Sergey Rabotyagov)
Abstract:This paper examines experimentally the effects of using a lottery mechanism to finance a
threshold public good. We compare the provision of threshold public goods through the provision point mechanism and lotteries under three treatments that differ in the kind of lottery design
applied. We explore situations with a single as well as multiple public goods. The lottery mechanism outperforms the provision point mechanism with regard to average individual contribution,
provision of the public good and successes of covering the threshold cost.
• Cross-Market Effects of Nonprofit Competition on Donations
Abstract: This paper investigates the cross-market effect of nonprofit competition on fundraising.
Competition among nonprofits in a market can influence fundraising expenses by the organizations
in the same market as well as those in other markets. This paper estimates whether cross-market
effects of competition on fundraising exists, their magnitude and direction in relation to the own

market effects. Increased competition in a market can have a positive external effect on other organizations by awakening potential donors to giving. However, it can also steal away donors. In
cases where significant cross-market effects exist, their dependence on the types of the markets is
also estimated to understand the mechanisms at play.
• Effect of Online Donor Reviews and Ratings on Donations
Abstract: Online donor reviews and ratings help transmit information about nonprofit organizations
that potential donors can use to evaluate the quality of a charity. This paper examines the effect of
such reviews and ratings on charitable donations received by nonprofits. The findings of this paper
will help identify an alternative assurance mechanism that can reduce the reliance on traditional
fundraising and mandatory disclosures policies for nonprofit information.
