He was the oldest of four brothers. Lewis and his family lived on the family farm. Lewis became very interested in the machinery he saw - the oil field equipment operating nearby and the farm equipment. Lewis went to a country school in Belle Plaines until the 10th grade. For the 11th grade he went to live in a boarding house in Baird. There he learned of an occupational training program, and he began to work in the largest machine shop in Abilene while finishing high school. He graduated from high school in 1939 and then attended Texas A&M in the College of Engineering. In 1941 he tried to enlist in the service but because he was color blind, continued his education instead. After two years at A&M, he got a job as a machinist in the shipyards of Seattle, Washington, and after 3 months there, went to work in the Panama Canal Zone. He worked in Seattle for a year and then went back to Abilene to try again to get into the military. Early in 1944 he was accepted for a special assignment unit in the Navy. In the early part of 1945, he was on a cargo ship about 400 miles south of Japan when the first atomic bomb was exploded. After the war he came back and finished his studies at A&M. In the summer of 1949, a friend of Lewis’ set him up on a blind date with Myrtle Peyton. They were married on December 21, 1949, and were married for over fifty years . Lewis graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1951. For several years, Lewis worked for various places specializing in heat exchangers, boilers, and reactors. In 1954 their only son, Mike, was born while they were living in Hearne, Texas. In 1969, he founded Cheek Engineering in Baytown, Texas, and closed the business in 2003. He designed and improved many boilers all over the USA. In 2008 Mike and his family moved back to Texas, and Lewis lived with them for a year before moving to Colonial Oaks in August 2009. Lewis loves his five grandchildren: Tim (25), Philip (23), Julia (19), Peter (16), and Amy (13).
