Automotive technology has advanced so quickly over the past 40 years of Convergence. The industry now looks completely different and the features that differentiate models and brands are not related to horsepower and torque, but rather Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Understanding and managing the electrical systems technology and recognizing the rapid rate of technology development is crucial for success in every design. One very effective method of gaining this knowledge for the several generations of product development is to compare designs and attitudes with other professionals in the field. By mixing with executives, engineers and suppliers from around the world, a basis for comparison and confidence can be built up. Convergence, organized by SAE International under the Chrysler Group’s leadership, provides an environment for those working in technology to compare experiences, learn from others and to gain a sense of what is important and where the industry is going. Convergence is very important to many of the industry’s developments, and so it is always interesting to compare the different viewpoints that are expressed in public and in the break-out sessions, as well as over a coffee. The proceedings are reviewed, published and available to all attendees, so that there is an atmosphere of working together to move the industry forward as a whole. I also hope you take advantage of this opportunity to connect with your fellow professionals, make some new friends and enjoy all that downtown Detroit has to offer. Sincerely, Chris Barman Unit Responsible, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Chrysler Group LLC JOIN THE CONVERSATION! These expectations are conflicting: consumer’s desire personalization of their devices, but manufacturers strives for commonality; some consumers view personal mobility as a chore, others as an expression of their individuality. We will explore these dichotomies, and discuss the near and mid-term shifts in the expectation of how consumers will perceive personal mobility devices. Topics to be discussed: Innovation That Address Changing user Expectations Panelists: Catherine Lovazzano, Chrysler Group, LLC Chris Thomas, Fontinalis Partners, LLC The Connected Vehicle Panelists: Marios Zenios, Chrysler Group, LLC Dan Loop, Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. Autonomous Driving Panelists: David Strickland, Venable LLP Chris Gerdes, Stanford University Sponsored by: Tata Consultancy Services 8 Recent demonstrations of automotive hijackings using a laptop computer to gain access to the internal control system of the vehicle have illustrated the current security issues and concerns facing the automotive industry. As automotive systems become more-interconnected, security must be end-to-end. Both safety and cyber-security must be assured. What does the future hold for security and safety? How will these threats evolve? What steps need to be taken to ensure the trust? Moderator: Paul M. Hansen, The Hansen Report Building Trustworthy Systems Speaker/Panelist: Dr. Roger Seagle, Cisco Systems, Inc. Are We Ready for the Connected Car? Kearney, Alisyn Malek The Millennial generation, also known as, Gen Y, is entering the workforce in large numbers with high expectations, extraordinary talents and a great deal of motivation. As great as this may sound, the entrance of Gen Y into the workforce has become a major disruption for companies that have not taken the time to understand Gen Y. With Baby Boomer’s retiring and Gen X being the smallest generation in US history, Millennials have quickly become 35% of the US workforce and that number is still rising. Millennials are typically categorized as individuals born between 1980 and 1995. They are sometimes described as feeling entitled and being impatient. At first glance this may seem to be true, but as we begin to take a closer look, we quickly realize their expectations are different than previous generations simply because their experiences have been different. Join us as we explore the next generation of employees (Millennials), how they differ from the previous generation and how these differences affect the work place and products. Executive Visionaries Panel Future of Technology Delivery External Transfer Trends Wednesday, October 22, 2014 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. Organized by Tim Callard Wednesday, October 22, 2014 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Organized by Tony Cooprider Wednesday, October 22, 2014 1:15 - 2:45 p.m. Organized by Harald Wilhelm Comprising the top automotive technology executives from the world’s technology integration visionaries, this panel is a terrific opportunity to learn where the industry is heading and what is going to be expected from technology suppliers. The panelists represent the gatekeepers of new vehicle technologies, features and functions. Find out which technologies are gaining traction with the OEMs and how those technologies will transform personal mobility The Executive Visionaries panel provides a unique forum to share insights with the global supplier community. As the complexity of automotive EE systems technology continues to grow, the engineering competency models, engineering processes, IT support and mechanisms to deliver that technology efficiently have not kept pace. We will gather leaders in the PMTI space, with engineering educational leaders to propose a vision of where technology delivery will go in the future, how it addresses and resolves pervasive development problems and how do we prepare engineers to lead and execute it. With the trend to more driver assistance functions in automotive applications, the requirements for those technologies become more similar to other industries like aerospace, military or IT. In this session we will to compare the requirements and processes of these industries to the automotive industry. We will have representatives from automotive and adjacent industries to debate the future of the automobile and predict which industries will be transferring its technology to the automobile.
