Programs such as the community favorite Culinary Arts and also the Early Childhood Education and Care, which started just last semester, now have a classroom to call home on the campus. NGTC Cuts Ribbon on New Currahee Campus Classrooms Patience, perseverance, and community commitment paid off in a big way on Tuesday, October 8, 2014, when North Georgia Technical College officially cut the ribbon on the Currahee Campus’s new classroom wing. “Today is an exciting day for North Georgia Tech and for the community that made this happen,” said NGTC President Dr. Gail Thaxton. “It took many diverse groups of people to bring this dream to reality. We appreciate this very special community which constantly supports our efforts and our students. You are here today because this community wanted meeting space, programs to prepare our workforce, and higher education that is accessible and affordable, and we are proud to continue providing those to you.” When the campus opened in 2005, it seemed improbable that full capacity would be reached so quickly. With an eye toward future enrollment growth, the present building was designed to accommodate additional wings when course and student numbers dictated the need for increased space. By 2009, it was apparent that the time had come to move forward on those plans. “Our vision is to graduate a highly skilled workforce for businesses and industry,” said Technical College System of Georgia Board Member Dinah Wayne. Students, you are the reason we are here today. We are here to train you to take your place in the workforce.” The 31,000 square foot addition houses mostly health care programs including Practical Nursing, Emergency Medical Programs, and Medical Assisting. Furthermore, moving those programs into “This building is more than brick and mortar,” said Thaxton. “It is giving students the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills to make them competitive in the workforce. It is providing the opportunity for learning that will last for a lifetime.” “Community development, workforce development, and economic development are hard work,” said Tim Martin, Stephens County Economic Development Authority. Martin called out the efforts of Jeannette Jamison and Jim Butterworth in particular. “This is a result of great leaders in action. What do we do now? We continue to strive every day to make tomorrow better.” Photos of the ribbon cutting are on the NGTC Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ngtcnews.
