Saez was aboard the Rick Hiles-trained Montezuma Express and clipped heels with the horse in front of him, Paddy=s Notes, causing his mount to fall and throwing the Panamanian jockey heavily to the ground. A trailing horse, Masaru, ridden Juan Saez aboard Lady Zuzu by Ricardo Santana Jr., was unable to avoid the fallen after a victory last week horse and also fell, unseating Coady Photography his jockey as well. As a result of the contact, Masuru was euthanized. Santana Jr. was not injured. In what is believed to be an unrelated incident, one of the leading horses in the race, Platitude, unseated jockey Marcelino Pedroza. Platitude was euthanized and as a result of the accident, officials at Indiana Grand canceled the day=s final race. Saez was attended to by on-track EMS and was airlifted from the scene by Life Flight to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was treated in the facility=s Level One trauma center, the Indianapolis Star reported. A graduate of the Laffit Pincay Jr. Jockey School in Panama, Saez made a near-immediate impact in the Midwest, and had won 89 of his 440 mounts with an in-the-money record of 53% and purse earnings of $2,053,219. He was easily the leading rider at this year=s Ellis Park meeting with 51 wins, and had partnered with two winners from 26 mounts at Keeneland. In what must rank as one of the highlights of his career, the junior Saez piloted the winner of one of the Indiana-bred stakes earlier on the same program as his older brother guided East Hall (Graeme Hall) to an upset victory in the GII Indiana Derby Oct. 4. Juan hailed from a racing family; along with brother Luis, cousins Gabriel Saez and Angel Arroyo are also jockeys. AJuan Saez possessed an immense gift for riding horses and there is no telling how bright his future as a jockey would have been," Alex Waldrop, president and CEO of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, as well as the entire tight-knit racing community that supports Indiana Grand.@ The record price for a Book 2 yearling was passed in emphatic style on Wednesday evening when a first-crop son of Darley=s Poet=s Voice (GB) was hammered down to a determined Angus Gold on behalf of Shadwell for 525,000gns. Following a blockbuster Book 1 last week, it was in the cards that Book 2 would be similarly strong, but plenty of vendors engaged at Tattersalls this week have continued to express a mixture of surprise and delight at the market=s depth, which has seen a rise in median of 35% to 50,000gns and average by 36% to 64,478gns. Conducted over three days instead of four, comparisons are tricky, but 119 fewer yearlings Lot 1270 offered have neverthless Tattersalls contributed to a growth in aggregate of 17% to 42,555,500gns, illustrating the extraordinary level of demand for yearlings in Newmarket this week. Twenty-seven yearlings fetched 200,000gns or more in Book 2 this year compared to nine in 2013 and the clearance rate remained on a par at 87%. ACompetition for quality yearlings has been extraordinary from start to finish and record-breaking turnover for the fourth consecutive year, despite cataloguing 137 fewer yearlings than last year, is a measure of the intense demand we have seen over the past three days. As well as turnover second only to Book 1 amongst European yearling sales, Book 2 of this year=s October Yearling Sale has achieved wide-margin increases in all the key indicators and, as ever, has paid an enormous tribute to the outstanding quality of the yearlings sent here from throughout Britain, Ireland and further afield. Cherry on Top-- For a While... Earlier in the session, a bidding war between Kieran McManus and Alastair Donald came close to bringing about a new record for Book 2 but as the hammer came down on the Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) colt (lot 1186), who was the object of their desire, the 390,000gns vouched by McManus fell just short of the target. Son of prominent Irish jumps owner J P McManus, the successful buyer also signed for a Sea The Stars (Ire) half-sister to Derby winner Motivator (GB) for 500,000gns during Book 1. His Book 2 purchase was offered by Ballylinch Stud on behalf of his breeder Cherry Faeste of Tourgar House Stud. A half-brother to dual Grade II winner Grandeur (Ire) (Verglas {Ire}), the colt is out of Misskinta (Ire) (Desert Sun {GB}), one of just two mares owned by Faeste and her Norwegian husband Arild at their Co Waterford farm. cont. p6 TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 10/16/14 • PAGE 6 of 14 • thoroughbreddailynews.com AThis is the only yearling we=ve sold this year and I can=t believe that price, but he was an exceptional horse,@ said Faeste, who confirmed that Misskinta has a Dubawi filly foal at foot. John O=Connor, manager of Ballylinch Stud, added: AWe felt this colt would stand out in Book 2--we had the option of putting him in Book 1. Cherry Faeste is an extremely successful breeder. She sends the yearlings to us when they are ready to be prepped and we=ve been selling for her for years. This horse was very straightforward with a great constitution. We were impressed with how professional he was when he came up to the ring and plenty of people were very taken with him.@ Faeste was congratulated by her brother, Philip Myerscough of Baroda Stud, who on Tuesday sold a filly by Mastercraftsman (lot 779) for 210,000gns with David Cox from Colbinstown Stud. ACherry asked me why I was crying,@ joked Myerscough with tears in his eyes. AI told her it=s called jealousy!@ The sale also provided an emotional moment for young bloodstock agent Cathy Grassick, who operates in the name of her late father as Brian Grassick Bloodstock. ACherry was the first person to ask me to buy a horse when I was still working for my dad and Misskinta was the first horse I bought her,@ said Grassick. AI=ve bought two mares for Cherry and they=ve both produced two stakes horses so I think I=ll stop there.@ In addition to Grandeur, Misskinta is the dam of listed-placed Magnolia Beach (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) and three-time winner Magique (Ire) (Jeremy). Her further family includes Sea The Stars= (Ire) first Group winner My Titania (Ire). Fresh from selling the top-priced filly at Goffs= Orby Sale, Ballylinch Stud recorded some terrific results during Book 2, selling nine yearlings for an average of 121,000gns. These included the leading lady on Wednesday (lot 1063), a filly by Lawman (Ire) from one of the stud=s longstanding families who was bought by John Warren for 260,000gns. O=Connor commented as the filly left the ring: "We bred her dam, Kerry Gal (Ire), but ironically she never raced as she was injured at the sales when we tried to sell her as a yearling. Less than a week after the death of Captain John Macdonald-Buchanan, a Dutch Art (GB) colt bred at his Lavington Stud in Sussex (lot 1062) was the early star of Wednesday=s final session of Book 2 at Tattersalls when selling for 340,000gns to Al Mirqab Racing. The second foal of Presque Isle Downs listed winner Kelowna (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), the chestnut attracted the attention of plenty of serious buyers, including Ross Doyle, John Warren, Richard Brown and eventual under-bidder Charlie Gordon-Watson. I saw him in the summer and have had him all the way through his sales prep. Like all the Dutch Arts I've had, he had a great temperament and his last show was as good as his first.@ Family Ties that Bind for Muir... Carmel Stud bought Just Devine (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) for 21,000gns as a yearling and though one placed finish was the best she could manage on the racecourse, the half-sister to Group 3 winner Airmail Special (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) has repaid the investment made by Kevin and Michelle Morgan by producing four winners, including Qatar Racing=s listed-placed End Of Line (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}). Her latest success came in the sales ring on Wednesday morning when her Kyllachy (GB) yearling colt (lot 1052) was sold to William Muir for 280,000gns. The trainer had three very good reasons to go right to the top of his budget for the colt as he trains or has trained three of this colt=s winning half-siblings--Magic Secret (GB) (Trade Fair {GB}), Secret Weapon (GB) (Choisir {Aus}) and current 2-year-old Code Red (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}), the eye-catching 4 1/2-length winner of a six-furlong Nottingham maiden Oct. 8 (video). AI train his half-brother, who bolted in the other day, and from day one I thought he=d be top class,@ said Muir. AI also trained Secret Weapon, who was sold to race abroad. This was a lovely colt but I couldn=t have gone any further for him! I don=t usually spend that sort of money, but I=ve got a syndicate together to race him and we thought >let=s just give it a go.=@ The trainer, who has signed for 10 yearlings in Book 2, has enjoyed success in the last few seasons with another son of Kyllachy, the multiple stakes winner Stepper Point (GB). Fast and Expensive... Joe Hernon=s Castletown Stud was the consignor of another colt to pass the 200,000-guinea mark on Wedensday when offering a son of Fastnet Rock (Aus) (lot 1196) out of a half-sister to promising young sire Fast Company (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 10/16/14 • PAGE 8 of 14 • thoroughbreddailynews.com Ballyhimikin Stud consigned the son of the unraced Dalakhani (Ire) mare Livadream (Ire), who hails from the family of dual Group 1 winner Linngari (Ire) (Indian Ridge {GB}). Fresh Princes... Within a handful of lots there were some eye-catching results for first-season sires on the final day of Book 2. Lot 1113, a beautifully prepared son of Lilbourne Lad (Ire) gave Brendan Holland=s Grove Stud a decent return on investment when improving his 65,000gns foal price to 140,000gns. A grandson of GI Beverly D S. winner Snow Polina (Ire) out of her unraced Peintre Celebre daughter Lola Rossa (Ire), the colt was bought by Ross Doyle, and was one of two six-figure colts for the sire in the session after lot 1105, out of Linngari=s half-sister Lilakiya (Ire) (Dr Fong), fetched 100,000gns. Shadwell stood their ground for the offspring of two freshmen, with Angus Gold signing for lot 1120, a Glenvale Stud-consigned son of Roderic O=Connor out of listed winner Lucky Pipit (GB) (Key Of Luck), at 170,000gns and lot 1125, a Poet=s Voice (GB) half-brother to GII Goldikova S. winner Rhythm Of Light (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}), at 160,000gns--as well as later going to 525,000gns for the top lot of the sale by the same sire. By the end of Book 2, Poet=s Voice was the leading sire with 26 sold for an average of 94,096gns. Coolmore=s Cape Blanco (Ire) had three colts in Book 2, with Wednesday=s offering, a colt out of listed-placed Keepers Hill (Ire) (Danehill) (lot 1061) selling for 150,000gns to MV Magnier. Extraordinary Trade... Following the sale, Mahony could not help but gush about the results. ATurnover in excess of 40 million gns has exceeded expectations by a considerable margin, as have the huge rises in average, median and the number of lots sold for 100,000 guineas or more,@ he explained. ALast year=s record average of 47,529gns has soared to more than 60,000gns, the median has jumped from 37,000gns to 50,000gns and the number of six-figure lots has risen from 62 to more than 100. Similar to Book 1, the influence of buyers from throughout the Gulf region has been enormous and the global demand, particularly from Hong Kong, has been hugely significant. However, the backbone to Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale has always been the British and Irish trainers and they have been out in force, all contributing to a clearance rate of nearly 90%. The first session of a two-day Book 3 sale begins today at 9:30 a.m. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE WITH CHAMPIONS IN MIND by Emma Berry On a morning organised to promote this Friday=s Dubai Future Champions Day at Newmarket, there could hardly be a bigger rabbit to pull out of the hat than a foal by Frankel (GB) who just so happens to be a half-brother to Dubawi (Ire). If genes count for anything then the bold bay colt, who was foaled exactly seven months before his first major photo call, has the words future champion imprinted in his DNA. Frankel colt Frankel has done more to Emma Berry photo promote the sport of horseracing and the town where he was trained and now stands at stud than any multi-million dollar advertising campaign could ever achieve. Though proven on the track, he has it all to prove at stud. The same cannot be said for Dubawi, whose swift rise through the ranks of the world=s elite stallions has offered gratification and solace to the man who bred and raced both him and his sire Dubai Millennium, who died at the age of just five, not long after Dubawi was conceived. AIt gives Sheikh Mohammed an unbelievable amount of satisfaction to have seen Dubawi become so successful at stud,@ says the Sheikh=s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson. ADubai Millennium was a homebred and he was a dream from the day that he worked on the Limekilns and they decided to change his name from Yaazer to Dubai Millennium to then going on and winning the Dubai World Cup in the millennium year and retiring to stud. The day he died was awful, so when Dubawi came along it was almost like him rising from the ashes. For Dubawi to go on and be a great racehorse was one thing but then to become such an extraordinary stallion has been wonderful to see.@ TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 10/16/14 • PAGE 9 of 14 • thoroughbreddailynews.com Treve=s tryst with Dubawi may have been delayed for a year as she attempts to bag her third G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe, but the stallion will not want for elite mares in his 2015 book. Ferguson alone spent 5,775,000gns on seven Dubawi yearlings during Book 1 of Tattersalls October Sale last week, boosting him to leading sire by his average price of 654,500gns for 10 sold. Ferguson continued: ADubawi was knocked a bit when he first went to stud because although he=s an athletic horse, he=s a quite short-coupled and butty and some of his offspring didn=t walk as well as he did--but they ran. Dubawi He continued, AHis first crop, Emma Berry photo then second crop, just got stronger and stronger and I think what=s happened is that this year=s yearlings are from the first time the bloodstock world decided there is no doubt, this horse is special, and as a result he was sent some really special mares.@ The man likely to be charged with training a number of those expensive yearlings, as well as plenty of Sheikh Mohammed=s homebreds, is Charlie Appleby, who has recently completed his first year at the helm of Moulton Paddocks, one of two large Godolphin training establishments in Newmarket. Appleby=s colleague Saeed Bin Suroor trains nearby at Lord Derby=s former stable, Stanley House. The circumstances surrounding Appleby=s promotion to trainer following the eight-year ban handed out to his former boss Mahmood Al Zarooni have been well documented. Recent restructuring at Godolphin and a new tighter liaison with its sister breeding empire, Darley, have hinted that the operation is keen to pursue a new direction, and in Appleby it appears to have the ideal man to aid that aim. Though by no means a new face at Godolphin--he has served 16 years with the operation in Britain, France and Dubai--he brings a refreshing brand of candor to his new role. ATo get the Grade 1 winner out of the way at the end of last season steadied the ship for the winter,@ he says, referring to the victory of Outstrip (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) in the Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf. AHe took a lot of pressure off the whole team for this year. We have 70% 2-year-olds here, so at the moment it=s all about building for Outstrip next year and beyond. Emma Berry photo You have to take your time with some of these young horses and that=s what we=ve done.@ Evidence of this strategy is the lack of Godolphin entries in the major juvenile races this autumn but Appleby will be represented by Oasis Dream (GB) colt Charming Thought (GB) in tomorrow=s G1 Middle Park S. AWe supplemented Charming Thought for Future Champions Day because we haven=t wanted to put the pressure on by making entries in the big juvenile races. We=re taking our time--we=re quite happy to go and win some listed races and let these horses come to themselves and be ready for the spring of next year. We=re not under pressure to run them again this year. We need to build up the older-horse team at Moulton Paddocks.@ One sad postscript to the engaging morning spent with the affable trainer on Godolphin=s private gallops at Moulton Paddocks is the subsequent fatal training injury to 2012 G1 St Leger winner Encke (Kingmambo), who, along with Outstrip, French Navy (GB) (Shamardal) and Cat O=Mountain (Street Cry {Ire}) was one of the elder statesman of the team on parade with potential big-race engagements ahead of the close of the Flat turf season. Appleby, who lives at Moulton Paddocks with his Irish wife Aisling and three young daughters Emily, Erin and Edith, will once again divide his time between Newmarket and Dubai this winter, but another strategy shift, which will see many of the potentially smart Classic generation horses remain in the UK, means he will have a smaller team at his disposal for the Dubai International Racing Carnival. cont. p10 TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 10/16/14 • PAGE 10 of 14 • thoroughbreddailynews.com AMost of the 2-year-olds are not going to Dubai, some of the more backward ones may have a run in England through the winter,@ says the trainer. AIf you took those ones out to Dubai the window becomes very small for them. It=s easier to give them a run or two here and put them away for a month or two ahead of the spring. Moulton Paddocks He added, AThere=s a Emma Berry photo possibility that a filly like Yodelling, who is by Medgalia d=Oro (out of Echoes in Eternity {Ire}), could go as she might enjoy the dirt but we=d hope to bring her back in the spring too and look towards the Guineas--but there=s a long way to go with her yet.@ There=s no denying the desire of everyone within the team to see Godolphin return to its former heyday, when the likes of Daylami (Ire), Sulamani (Ire) and Fantastic Light bore the royal blue silks with honour in many of the world=s top races. And, despite a sensibly gentle approach to his fledgling training career, it is, unsurprisingly, at the top of Appleby=s list of aspirations, too. AI=ve been working for Godolphin for 16 years now so I like to feel that I know it inside out,@ he says. AOf course there=s pressure, but you have to look at it sensibly and pinpoint the horses we want to focus on and that=s what we=ve done this year. AThis year has been about regrouping and looking to 2015. We=ve treated the 2-year-olds differently and are mapping out their careers with future Group races in mind. Our ultimate goal is to win Classics and Group 1 races and to produce stallions.@ Dubai Future Champions days might be just the place to start. OWNER CONFERENCE WRAPS AT KEE By Lucas Marquardt The inaugural Thoroughbred Owners Conference, hosted by OwnerView, concluded a second day of panel discussions yesterday at Keeneland. The focus of the morning-only session was horse welfare and the future of the sport. The Horse Racing Radio Network=s Mike Penna moderated a panel entitled ACare for Dinny Phipps the Thoroughbred and LM photo Foundations@ that outlined some of the problems that arise in horses in training. AThe crux of treating race horses is taking care of their skeletons,@ said panelist Dr. Larry Bramlage. AThe reason horses are so good is that their skeleton is no bigger than it has to be, and horses manufacture their skeletons while they=re training. All training is overload and over-repair; do a little more than they=re ready to do, and the body gets the message, >I need to get better.= Eventually you get a racehorse.@ A video of one of Bramlage=s most famous patients, the Hall of Famer Personal Ensign, winning the 1988 GI Breeders= Cup Distaff was shown, and Bramlage explained why her win in that race was such a milestone. AThe fracture showed the coming of age of repair, where we could not only save lives, but get them back to training,@ he explained. The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation=s Nancy Kelly talked about the strides being made in Thoroughbred aftercare. AThe Breeders' Cup is more than just a great world championship horse racing event--it's a world-class entertainment experience,@ said Drew Sheinman, Chief Marketing and Revenue Officer for the Breeders= Cup. AWith that, we've historically had a good connection to Hollywood. The first-ever Breeders' Cup was at Hollywood Park and Elizabeth Taylor presented the first-ever Breeders' Cup trophy. It's very important to reconnect ourselves in a very high-level way with Hollywood. That led us to the association with the MPTF, which is probably the preeminent charity organization in Hollywood. Its members include George Clooney, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Gary Barber, Kevin Tsujihara--many leading executives and celebrities in and around the world of Hollywood. We thought it was a great cause and a great relationship for us to collaborate with them on this first-ever celebrity poker event and to celebrate the Breeders' Cup while also raising funds for the MPTF and the PDJF.@ With the untimely passing of jockey Juan Saez Tuesday, Sheinman reaffirmed the Breeders= Cup=s commitment to the PDJF. AIt's a cause that's very important to the industry and something that we believe in and are very supportive of, as are our two co-chairmen,@ he said. AThey along with us felt very strongly that if we just did a Hollywood event, it really wouldn't serve the dual purpose of integrating the convergence of Hollywood and the Breeders' Cup. Jacobs announced to the Virginia Racing Commission yesterday. Colonial Downs surrendered the state=s only operating license to the Virginia Racing Commission at the meeting, after the VRC was unwilling to let Colonial Downs sign a new contract with the Old Dominion Thoroughbred Horsemen=s Association. Off- track betting sites in the state will also be forced to close their doors. Wednesday=s announcement brings an end to a year-long dispute between Colonial Downs and the Virginia Racing Commission, which forced the track to cancel racing in 2014. AI am very proud of all of the Colonial Downs= associates and proud of what they have accomplished,@ Jacobs said to the commission yesterday. AI am sorry that we have come to this day. Virginia horseracing must change and the change must be dramatic, with all the disruption that dramatic change brings. Colonial Downs, however, cannot affect the change alone and it cannot afford to continue to operate in an environment that offers no possibility for improvement. Candidly the horsemen do not have enough purse money to pay their bills, race a healthy summer meet and grow a high-end nationally recognized boutique meet. The pari-mutuel wagering system in Virginia does not generate enough purse money to the horsemen to satisfy the objectives of maintaining summer racing and building a high-end nationally recognized thoroughbred racing brand. It is a shame that we are where we are. If Virginia=s statewide elected officials who created the pari-mutuel system in the first place could come up with a way for the horsemen to increase their annual purse money, from the current $6 million a year to $15 or $20 million a year, all of the industry objectives could be met. More importantly, Virginia thoroughbred racing would then reach its potential of serving as an important agribusiness outlet while driving hundreds of millions of dollars of growth into Virginia=s agribusiness economy.@ For the full statement from Jacobs, click here. A juvenile son of Tapit was one of two sixfigure lots during the horses of racing age sale, bringing a final bid of $370,000 from Jerry Frankel. Figures for the open session were down across the board with 124 horses grossing $608,900, compared to 155 selling for $1,508,100 in 2013. The average fell 49.5% to $4,910, while the median dropped 42.3% to $3,000. The buy-back rate was 31.5%. After private sales were included, the 2013 buy-back rate was 16.7%. The proposed 2015 schedule involves three overlapping dates between Ellis Park, Kentucky Downs and Churchill. Ellis Park will race Sept. 4, 5, 6, 7 as it had requested; while Kentucky Downs will race Sept. 5, 10, 12, 16 and 19; and Churchill will race Sept. 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26, 27. Kentucky Downs had requested seven days of racing for 2015. Churchill, which will have one fewer race day in September than it did in 2014, will receive a larger percentage of simulcasting revenue by being designated as the state=s host track from Sept. 8Sept. 30. Churchill had previously said that it would not race in September if it had to overlap at all with Kentucky Downs. The two tracks overlapped twice in 2014, but Kentucky Downs sought an additional Saturday date next year. The proposed schedule is expected to be approved by the full KHRC Oct. 21. Empire Showcase Day at Belmont: Belmont will host Empire Showcase Day Saturday, featuring eight stakes races strictly for New York-breds worth a total of $1.75 million in purses. The other three races on the 11-race card are also restricted to New York-breds. Taste NY will return to Belmont Saturday and features food, spirits and crafts produced in the state.
