Ádh Mór Sean Paul O’Hare, Director/Stiúrthóir Friday 5th Sept Doors 8pm €16/€13 Commences 8.30pm The Whitetop Mountain Band is a family-based band from the highest mountains of Virginia. Whitetop, Virginia is an area rich in the old time music tradition; this band has deep roots in mountain music. The members have done much to preserve the Whitetop region’s style of old time fiddling and banjo picking and are legendary musicians and teachers of the style. The band originated with Albert Hash in the 1940s, a well-known and beloved fiddler and luthier who had a tremendous impact on the old time and bluegrass scene. Today, the band is carried on by Thornton Spencer (fiddle), Emily Spencer (banjo and vocals) and their daughter, multiinstrumentalist and dancer, Martha Spencer. Jackson Cunningham plays mandolin, guitar, claw-hammer banjo, harmonica and Debbie Bramer plays bass and also dances. Ersel Fletcher, a retired coal-miner from Buchanan County, is the newest member of the band on guitar and vocals. For their first Irish tour, the band will be joined by multi-instrumentalist, Chris Testerman (in place of Thornton Spencer on fiddle). Renowned for their high energy and charisma on stage, Whitetop Mountain Band shows contain everything from fiddle/banjo instrumentals to powerful solos and harmony vocals on blues, classic country, honky-tonk, traditional bluegrass numbers, old timey ballads, originals, four part mountain gospel songs and flat foot dancing. Definitely not to be missed! Dervla has exhibited widely in Ireland and Cyprus, and has upcoming exhibitions in Edinburgh, Belfast and Iceland. Dervla’s interests within her current painting series ‘places I am looking for’, are derived from active engagement with ideas of place and space, often focusing on the reimagining of place that comes into play in conjunction with memory, recounting and retelling. Her work is influenced by colours, forms and milieu of places she has travelled, picking up narrative from myth, stories and imagination, and becoming new places inhabited by memory, experience and longing. The music they have written stretches and abstracts the DNA of Norwegian and Irish fiddling; the result is something new, sparse and stunning. It ranges from the nearsilent to the nigh-on orchestral, at times exploding joyously from their hybrid 10-string fiddles, at times barely there, holding time still. Utterly unique, this is music of an exceptional and unusual beauty. Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh has released ten CDs to date, including the debut album from The Gloaming, which reached #1 in the Irish music charts. He has performed far and wide, from New York’s Lincoln Center, to London’s Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Composer, fiddler, and electronic musician, Dan Trueman began studying violin at the age of 4, and decades later, fell in love with the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle. Dan has worked Trollstilt and QQQ, the American Composers Orchestra, So Percussion, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Brentano and Daedelus string quartets, the Crash Ensemble, across America, Ireland, and Norway. He is Professor of Music at Princeton University, where he teaches counterpoint, electronic music, and composition. “This music defies genre, it's just a beautiful, spacious and luscious soundscape.Everyone should hear this.” Martin Hayes Looking for a venue for your special occasion? He recorded his first of many solo albums in 1971 before joining the Boys of the Lough, one of the very first internationally touring Celtic bands, in time for their first album. Dick is deeply committed to fighting social injustice and standing up for the common man in the face of oppression. His unwavering belief in the strength of the human spirit to conquer seemingly insurmountable obstacles has influenced his willingness to sing new songs and rework old ones to accentuate an essential optimism and belief in humanity’s ability to stand up and be free. Raised in the shore town of Little Silver, New Jersey, Greg became enthralled by the greater New York area’s rich music scene. He discovered a sort of holy musical trinity in the work of Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, and Hank Williams, with their guiding lights of passion, literary dexterity and plainspoken honesty. It’s one reason Trooper’s music feels equally informed by Memphis soul, Greenwich Village folk and Nashville twang. Trooper has made an impact on the music scenes in all the places he’s lived since leaving home after high school: Austin, Texas, Lawrence, Kansas, Nashville and New York. Music critics praise his poetic feel, infectious melodies and insightful lyrics. Above all, it’s the story of an immensely engaging tour guide shepherding his charges, and us, through the headstones and monuments; it’s a documentary film that offers a glimpse into the unknown, a world that we will all come to share. Often humorous, always affecting, One Million Dubliners explores life, death and the afterlife, and ends in a way that will stay with you forever. Even in a cemetery you never quite get used to death. Best Irish Feature Documentary Film, Galway Film Fleadh 2014 Director: Aoife Kelleher Duration: 86 mins. Language: English Cert: PG From Galway, Award-winning quartet We Banjo 3 combine Irish Music with Old-Time American and Bluegrass influences to reveal the banjo’s rich legacy and roots. When this band of brothers takes flight in a wave of virtuosity, verve and joie-de-vivre; feet tap and pulses race. Enda & Fergal Scahill and Martin & David Howley are among the most celebrated and distinguished young musicians in Ireland today. Featuring banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, vocals and percussion, We Banjo 3 make a bold and extraordinary musical statement. Collectively, WeBanjo3 have been at the forefront of Irish banjo and fiddle for 2 decades. Their competitive success is unrivalled, Martin holding 7 All Ireland titles, Enda with 4, while Fergal and David hold All Ireland titles on Banjo, Fiddle, Bodhrán and Guitar. It’s just about impossible to stay in your seat when Canadian top dogs Cam Penner and Jon Wood hit the stage. The songs are instantly infectious and true celebrations of life… and the stunning album, ‘To Build a Fire’, won them huge praise from critics on both side of the Atlantic, its part-folk/part-rock ‘n’ roll style appealing to all ages and musical tastes. ‘Live’ they are mesmerising. When they were last on this side of the pond, reviews of their sold-out Glasgow show said: “This superb gig never dipped below ‘magical’.” "If music had a quota system, then the category of singer-songwriter would be closed due to overcrowding. His childhood seems to be ill-fated: when his family has to leave their village to make way for a dam, a terrible accident follows. Together with his father and grandmother, he is sent to a camp where he incurs the wrath of the other camp-dwellers. They soon make up their mind that Ahlo is cursed and brings bad luck. His only friend is Kia, who lives with her uncle Purple and knows all too well what it’s like to be an outcast. The group’s search for a new home leads them through the Laotian outback. Here, they come across a rocket festival that holds an entire village on tenterhooks. At last, Ahlo sees a chance to prove he is lucky rather than cursed and he takes part in the dangerous competition.
