Alexander was chosen to be the CWWF Prince during Dodge City Days. The CWWF treated him like a king by giving him a new outfit from head to toe. Alexander received new boots, hat, shirt, jeans, and belt buckle to wear to the PRCA Rodeo. Alexander was very excited about the opportunity to go into the arena with Dr. R.C. Trotter and Miss Rodeo Kansas as the CWWF presented him with a hat with rodeo celebrity's signatures and a new belt buckle. While attending the rodeo, Alexander and his family had the opportunity to go behind the scenes and spend time with the animals and rodeo celebrities. Alexander also was in the parade and attended the Dodge City Cowboy Band concert during Dodge City Days. CWWF purchased a SpongeBob costume so he could lead the march with the children while the band played the SpongeBob theme song. After the concert the children had the opportunity to take a picture with him. Alexander is a huge fan of SpongeBob so it was a special treat for him. 1 / FALL FOCUS 2014 • ARROWHEAD WEST INC. ON OUR COVER EVERETT will shine in Featured on our cover is a picture that Everett McAuliffe's mother, Tracy, took of him safely tucked into the uniform pocket as his father, Sgt. Jacob McAuliffe, gently held his head. Everett was 3 weeks old and weighed 6.5 lbs. Tracy took the picture of Everett and posted it online in a discussion group. She was informed of a contest and was encouraged to turn it in. Before she knew it, she found out that their little guy would appear on the big screen at Times Square in New York City. TIME SQUARE’S bright lights Everett will appear in the bright lights of Broadway as part of the National Down Syndrome Society's (NDSS) annual Times Square video presentation. The photo of Everett, who has Down syndrome, was selected from over 2,000 worldwide entries. Nearly 220 photographs will appear in the video, which will be shown in the heart of Times Square. The presentation kicks off Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and followed by the 20th annual Flagship Buddy Walk in New York City. Everett was diagnosed with the genetic disorder when he was born on May 5th. Within hours, a doctor informed the first-time parents their child had Down syndrome. It was later determined it was a type that is not inherited, but a random occurrence. “It was definitely a shock to hear,” Tracy said. “I've been very fortunate to have Arrowhead West come out to my house for physical therapy and our caseworker, Kim Peterson, has just been amazing.” Tracy's six years of teaching has provided some perspective in caring for a child with Down syndrome. “I guess it's prepared me for the blessing of having a child with special needs,” she said. “Still, I didn't know too much about it. I knew some and it has opened up a new world of knowledge. The resources, provided at no cost to the family through state and federal grants to Arrowhead West, helps them in immeasurable ways,” Tracy said. The family will have several specialists come to their house to help Everett develop all areas of his development that sometimes take children with Down syndrome longer to achieve. “It's just a fantastic situation and setup they have here. It's nice to have those resources available for us,” Tracy said. “It has been a pleasure getting to know Everett and his family. I look forward to supporting his needs in the future. He is truly a pocketful of sunshine.” KIM PETERSON, AWI EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATOR ARROWHEAD WEST, INC • FALL FOCUS 2014 / 2 10 YEARS Of Candle Making Ten short years ago, Arrowhead West was looking for a way the clients in our day program could produce a product and create income. After a lot of research and testing, the clients began a new venture and started production of Arroma candles. We are excited to announce that we are selling our new candle product, Arroma Squares. Arroma Squares are 3/4” squares of scented wax that can be melted in a wax warmer. They are available in the same favorite scents that are used in the candles. The squares are available in packages of 6 and 12. The Arroma products have become a signature product of AWI. Nearly 12,000 lbs. of wax has been used to produce candles and squares in the last 10 years. It began with 13 fragrances and has grown to nearly 30. The Arroma products are sold at AWI and other business locations. Many groups and organizations sell the products for fundraisers and they make great gifts. Production of Arroma products is one of the clients favorite jobs. They have been making homes smell wonderful for the last 10 years with the wide variety of fragrances and are looking forward to many more years. You want to sing them nursery rhymes, enjoy music and watch them play with friends. That is exactly what Declan's parents are experiencing in his childhood. “As parents we are simply amazed at the resilience of Declan. He's never fussed with the implants or been bothered by them from the beginning. We are truly lucky to have such a brilliant little guy who's catching up really quickly! We are extremely grateful for the science behind the cochlear implants!! And of course we are extremely blessed by Declan’s hearing team! It consists of his grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, Jackie, his audiologist, Stephanie from Children's Hospital, Wanda from Arrowhead West, his two daycare providers and all of our friends who continually help us and Declan along his hearing journey. Words will never express how grateful we are for all of these people! Thank You!” Declan's parents, Abby and Travis, were determined to do what they could to give him the best chance for success after discovering he had hearing issues. After many doctors' visits, tests, and hearing aids they received the news that Declan was a candidate for Bilateral Cochlear Implants to help him hear within normal hearing limits. Abby and Travis chose to have the surgery done by a team at Children's Hospital in Denver. Declan had to be one year old to have the implants. While waiting for all the pieces to fall in place for his surgery, Abby and Travis did everything they could to help him learn and communicate by continually working with him and taking sign language classes from the Kansas School for the Deaf. It was very important to keep his understanding of communication moving. Wanda, Arrowhead West Speech Language Pathologist, also began working with him and the family to continue to progress his skills. The day finally came for Declan's surgery and the cochlear implants were placed. Declan is now 1 ½ years old and hears most things. His hearing age is six months because that is how long he has had the implants. Declan is learning new sounds and beginning to speak basic words such as moo, quack quack and making motor noises. Declan continues to make strides in his communication. As he grows up, his parents want him to be bilingual by using sign language. With each new word that Declan speaks, Abby and Travis know there is no limit for their son and he can accomplish anything he wants. Gardening Success As the snow was piling up and the winter winds were blowing the day program at Arrowhead West (AWI) was having gardening classes. They were learning about all the different types and ways to start a garden. Master Gardener and AWI Board Member, Phil Lunt, stopped in and loved the idea of the clients creating a garden. He dropped off books and gave suggestions of what type of garden he felt would work best for everyone. With Phil's knowledge and AWI's client skills they decided a square foot garden was the best way to go because it will allow easy access, easy maintenance and easy harvesting of the bounty of tomatoes. They built the square boxes with lumber that was generously donated by Home Lumber and began transplanting. Phil donated the combination soil that included vermiculite, peat moss and compost that was used in the boxes and tomatoes cages to contain the plants as they were getting larger each day. “ It was a huge success and exceeded our expectations. Everyone is very excited to develop a garden again next year. “ During the late winter months they started to plant the seeds indoors. Some were planted using a paper pot maker that Phil introduced them to. It is a clever tool for making seed pots from newspaper. When it is planted in the ground the newspaper rots away. As the plants became larger they moved them to coffee cans and quickly it was time to transplant them outdoors. RICHARD HAWLEY, PROGRAM MANAGER Everyone looks forward to watering and reaping the rewards each day. The plants have grown about six feet tall and have been producing approximately 20 lbs. of beautiful tomatoes each week. The plants are so large the tomato cages are no longer holding them up. Many of the clients have found enjoyment in the garden. It provides a relaxing and calming activity that has increased self-esteem and an improved environment. Arrowhead West would like to thank Phil Lunt and Home Lumber for their part in making the garden a success! Clients from the Western Kansas Division Day Program also planted a garden and love to show off their bountiful results. ARROWHEAD WEST, INC • FALL FOCUS 2014 / 6 Nonprofit Org.
