PRODOS and DOS dosing systems are designed for dosing liquid disinfection and chemical agents
for water conditioning in power plants, cooling systems, air conditioning and also for hot sanitary
water. PRODOS systems are designed for proportional dosing activated by a no voltage contact
from an impulse water meter.

BATCH DOSATOR TYPE MINDOS 5L
The batch dosator type MINDOS 5L is intended for batch dosing of chemicals into smaller
heating systems.
It operates on the principle of displacement with the help of inlet (soft) water with higher
pressure or by creating an adequate pressure difference between the inlet and outlet
connection with the help of a throttling valve.
Mindos 5L is produced from surface protected sheet steel, inlet and outlet connection of 1/2''

The product line of the company ASTRO is represented by polyethylene tanks made according to
the technology of rotational moulding which is most often used in the food-processing, chemical,
pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and textile industry, with the production of industrial paints, drinking
water treatment, and on treatment plants of municipal, industrial and waste water from landfills.
ASTRO vessels are designed and entirely produced in the manufacturer’s plant, including
metal load-bearing elements (frames, supports, carts) and connections to vessels which are
custom -made according to user’s needs.
All vessels are designed and produced as monoblock, meaning that the products are moulded

STATIC MIXERS - STATIFLO
STATIFLO is the world’s leader for the development and application of static mixing technology for
the water industry. The extensive product range includes pipeline mixers, channel mixers, gas
dispersion systems. Static mixers may be used for numerous applications for the blending, mixing
and dispersions of liquids and gases. The level of mixing can be selected by varying the style, number
and size of mixing elements. The only necessary feature is that the products to be processed can be
pumped through the mixer. Viscosities ranging from 0.01 cP up to 11.106 cP can be accommodated.
Sizes range from as small as 5 mm to 3000 mm diameter, in all commercially available materials of

TYPE SFS
Cartridge filters type SFS are used for filtration of water and other liquids with nominal flow
up to 3,2 m3/h. They consist of plastic housing with air valve and polypropylene filter
cartridge. Two sizes of housings, two hydraulic connection sizes and three basic filtration
degree filter cartridges are available. For water temperatures up to 80 °C, model H
is available in AISI 304 stainless steel housing.

TYPE PATFIL
Cartridge filters type PATFIL are used for filtration of water and other liquids with nominal
flow up to 60 m3/h. They consist of AISI 316L stainless steel housing and polypropylene
filter cartridges. The housing consists of hydraulic connections, air valve, connections for
pressure gauges and filter drain and height adjustable support legs. Six sizes are available
with filtration degree 1 µm, 5 µm, 10 µm and 20 µm.

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a membrane process where suspended particles are physically separated from water.
The size of separated particles is set with by the size of membrane pores; by ultrafiltration this is 0.01-0.1 µm. UF
removes suspended and colloidal particles, which cause water turbidity, oxidized Fe, Mn, pathogenic microorganisms
(parasites, bacteria, and viruses), and high-molecular fractions of organic substances.
Ultrafiltration membranes completely permeate dissolved salts and low-molecular organic substances which cause
color and taste as well as un-oxidized Fe and Mn in the water.

TYPE MINMEH
Cartridge ionic water softeners type MINMEH are used when soft water consumption is low.
Water softening, Ca and Mg ion exchange, is taking place when water flows through layers of
ion exchange resin.
Once ion exchange resin is exhausted, cartridge needs to be replaced with new one.
Exhausted cartridge is returned to the supplier for regeneration.

TYPE SANOM
SANOM softeners are designed to efficiently remove Ca and Mg ions from water with flow up
to 1,75 m3/h. Softening is performed when water flows through ion exchange resin bed inside
a pressure vessel. When ion exchange resin gets exhausted, regeneration with brine
(saturated NaCl solution) is needed to reactivate the resin.

DEMINERALISATION TYPE MINDEM
Cartridge ionic exchangers for water demineralisation type MINDEM are primarily used for
polishing of previously partially demineralised water and also when demineralised water
consumption is low.
Once ion exchange resin is exhausted, cartridge needs to be replaced with new one.
Exhausted cartridge is returned to the supplier for regeneration.

DEMINERALIZATION TYPE MIDEM
During water flow through cation
and anion ion exchanger cations
and anions from water are
exchanged with hydrogen and
hydroxyl ions bound to the cation
and anion ion exchangers. Water
gained this way practically does
not contain originally dissolved
substances; it is demineralized
and can as such be used for
different purposes.
Cation and anion exchanger are
exhausted sooner or later depending
on inlet water quality flow, and the
size of demineralization plant. The
demineralization plant disconnects
from working phase. This is followed
by the co-current regeneration of the
cation exchanger with HCl solution
and anion exchanger with NaOH
solution. All working and regeneration
phases are completely automatic.
Automatic ion exchangers type
MIDEM are intended for production
of demineralized water with
electro-conductivity up to 10 µS/cm
and at flows up to 6.2 m3/h. They
are available in six different sizes as
single or double plants. Demineralized water in double plants is
continuously available.

REVERSE OSMOSIS PLANTS
TYPE MINIRO AND INIRO
Reverse osmosis separation technology is used to remove dissolved impurities from water by
using semi-permeable membrane. High pressure is used as the driving force for the separation.
Pure water is permitted to pass through the membrane creating a purified permeate stream
while ionic, organic and other contaminants are swept away in a concentrated solution. The
quality of permeate can be further improved afterwards by using proper ion exchange plant or
electrodeionisation (EDI) for polishing. MINIRO reverse osmosis plants are used for permeate
flow up to 240 L/h. For higher capacities, INIRO plants (with proper pretreatment) are used.
All the units are fully automatic with modular and simple plug and play design.

Electrodeionization (EDI) is a method of
continuous water deionization. With proper
feed water pre-treatment and without use of
aggressive chemicals (acid, caustic), very low
outlet electro-conductivity (0,06 µS/cm), silica
(5 ppb) and total organic carbon (TOC) levels
can be achieved. There is also no need to treat
concentrate water.

UV DISINFECTION
Ultraviolet or UV light is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 200 nm and
400 nm (nanometres). Disinfection with UV light takes place when water flows through
reactor, where microorganisms are exposed to energy of photons in UV-C spectrum
(200–280 nm). At that time genetic material (DNA) of microbe cells is damaged and their
reproduction ability is stopped so they are unable to cause diseases. UV light is used for
disinfection of water, other liquids and solutions, air and surfaces.
Disinfection with UV light is a non-chemical method, therefore harmful oxidised disinfection
by-products (DBPs) are not formed, as it is the case when chlorine, for example. In special
applications, UV light is used to remove chlorine and ozone residual and oxidation of
organic matter.

The following methods are used for disinfection in water technology:
Chlorination with gaseous chlorine or sodium hypochlorite
Disinfection with chlorine dioxide
UV disinfection and
ozonation (ozonation is primarily an oxidizing process)
Choosing a disinfection method depends on water type and composition, type of microbiological
pollution, plant capacity, specific conditions in which the plant for water treatment operates, etc.
Introduction
The UV disinfection process from the above listed methods is specific; it runs without adding any substances in the water. UV
light affects the microorganisms, so that the energy of its photons damages the DNA and thereby these cannot reproduce
successfully and cause diseases. The method is suitable for disinfection of drinking and process water (1) and waste water (2).
Chlorination with gaseous chlorine and sodium hypochlorite is suitable for water disinfection with low content of organic substances.
Plants for electrolytic production of NaOCl at the place of use (4) present an interesting alternative to gaseous chlorine.
Chlorination at higher contents of organic substance is substituted with chlorine dioxide which is produced by mixing 7.5 %
of NaClO2 and 9% of HCl. Chlorine dioxide also breaks through biofilms at the walls of pipe systems and reservoirs (5).
Ozonation is predominately an oxidizing process. It is primarily used in water pretreatment. It also improves the coagulation characteristics of suspended particles in the water. It is an excellent method for oxidizing Fe, Mn, H2S, organic
substances, etc. It is produced in special generators, where oxygen molecules (O2) are split in the presence of a strong
electrical field into specific atoms (O) which are then combined into ozone molecules (O3). Due to its high oxidizing
potential ozone is also used as a very efficient disinfection substance (3).

ClO2 solution can be prepared by peroxo-disulfate method by mixing liquid component
(sodium chlorite) with solid component (sodium peroxo-disulfate). Solid component is added
to the liquid component 24 hours prior to use. Such ClO2 solution is stable for application for
up to 3 months.

This method is recommended especially for disinfection of:
•small public drinking water supply systems
•hot sanitary water systems
•heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC)
and very effectively for Legionella control and prevention.
ClO2 prepared by peroxo-disulfate method ensures all benefits of ClO2 as a disinfectant and oxidant with very low level of
health and occupational exposure risk.
Dosing is applied proportionally to water flow or storage tank volume. Dosing plants type DOS D or PRODOS D by
MAK CMC Water Technology Ltd. are being used for this application (please see product brochures).

Physico-chemical and microbiological criteria for water treatment:
physical treatment includes entry water filtration (mechanical and cartridge filters, ultrafiltration (1)). This reduces particle content
in the entry water and thereby reduces the probability of mechanical wear of equipment or parts of equipment in the system, the
possibility of sediments, and indirectly reduces the probability of microbiologic water contamination in the system. Ultrafiltration also
functions as a mechanical and microbiologic filter.

If the treatment system is inadequate or does not work optimally occasional curative
procedures are required:
mechanical cleaning of equipment and parts of the system (rinsing, scrubbing),
chemical removal of scale (rinsing with acid water solutions),
process for thermal shock disinfection of the system (dosage of disinfection substances into the system followed by rinsing of

For prevention of corrosion and scale formation, additives / inhibitors in form of condensed
polyphosphates, silicates or their combination are being used to treat sanitary hot water.
Dosing of the additives / inhibitors is done via flow proportional dosing plant (Type PRODOS) into
the entry of sanitary hot water system, boiler hot water tank or heat exchanger.
Successful treatment requires the fulfillment of the following conditions:
Hardness of inlet water up to 2.5 mmol/l (150dH)
Temperature of hot sanitary water up to 600C
Adequate exchange (consumption) of hot sanitary water
Treatment systems designed to prevent high temperatures
(locally) on surfaces in contact with water (heat exchangers).
In case the above mentioned conditions cannot be met, the use of water softeners (SANOM,
MINOM, INOM) can be applied alternatively to reduce water hardness to 1-1.5 mmol/l (5- 8 0dH).

Water with various temperature regimes is used as a medium for heat transfer in heating system circuits. There
are many kinds of heating systems which are especially dependent on the type of heating device (hot-water* or
warm-water boiler**) and system implementation (district heating or floor heating, open expansion or a closed
system with a direct pump, heat exchangers, etc.). Heating systems are roughly divided into:
1. Warm-water heating systems
The usual temperature regime is 90°C in pre-flow, and 70°C in return flow system. Expansion vessels – which can
be open or closed - are typically used in these types of systems.
2. Hot-water heating system
Water pressure in the system is higher than the atmospheric pressure and that is why temperatures at pre-flow
and return flow are higher than 100°C (for example: 110/90 or 130/110).
3. Low-temperature heating systems
The system operates at maximum water temperature of 75°C in pre-flow and 40°C in return flow. Low-temperature
heating is especially suitable for floor, wall or ceiling heating, as well as solar heating and heat pumps.
(*A hot-water boiler is a device that heats water over 100°C.)
(**A heating boiler is a device that heats water up to 100°C.)
Problems caused by inadequately treated water in heating systems can be divided into three sections:
1. Corrosion of metal materials included in the system.
Most corrosion processes in heating systems occur due to oxygen presence and inadequate combination of built-in
materials in direct and indirect contact (ferroalloy/copper/aluminum, stainless steel/galvanized elements, copper
alloy/aluminum, etc.).
2. Formation of scale on heating elements and pipeline surfaces.
Scale in heating systems is the result of inadequate water treatment (water with exceeded concentration of calcium
and magnesium salts, i.e. hard water) used in first system charging and later for complementing system loss.
3. Accumulation, i.e. concentration of sludge and suspended particles.
Sludge, mud, and suspended particles are also the result of oxygen corrosion on iron steel, the use of chemical
substances on sulfite basis which react directly with dissolved oxygen and cause precipitates, abrasion of materials due
to excessive speed of medium, inadequate cleaning of pipe connections and heating devices before the first charging.

Water treatment
Division in heating systems runs as follows:
Water used for charging and completing losses (added/ make up/ water), and
water that circulates between the heating devices and users (system water).
The use of plants for water treatment and chemical substances for conditioning depends primarily on the size (water
volume in the system), type of heating system (temperature regime), type of loss completion (manually or automatically), materials included in the system (iron, copper, aluminum), and physico-chemical characteristics of added/
make up water. The aim of water treatment is to prevent the formation of all types of corrosion, scale, and
suspended substances (except those arising from mechanical abrasion). Water treatment has to comply with all
demands as prescribed by heating system supplier (boiler plants, heat exchangers, etc.).
Water treatment for the heating system can be implemented in two places:
at the entry into the system for filling or completing –make up water
in the heating system – system water.
Make up, water is treated with procedures of ion water softening (plants MINMEH, SANOM, MINOM, INOM), and also
with water demineralization when required (plants: MIDEM, MINIRO, INIRO) from the water supply network.
System water treatment is divided into:
mechanical – partial filtration in by-pass, sludge traps, membrane degassers, in special implementations also
direct softening of system water, and
chemical – dosing corrosion inhibitors, sludge, and dispersants (plants: DOS, PRODOS, MINDOS).
Substances for oxygen reduction, substances for passivation of metal surfaces and dispersants that prevent
sedimentation and accumulation of suspended particles in the system are added to system water. These can then
be eliminated by partial filtration of system water or blow-down (controlled replacement of system water with fresh
make up water).
Adding substances for conditioning heating systems according the effectiveness, that is active components:
1. Oxygene scavengers (sulfite*, hydrazine, DEHA, carbohydrazide, etc.)
2. Substances for passivation of metal surfaces (hydrazine, DEHA, phosphate, silicate) that form a protective film on
metal materials.
3. Polymer dispersants that prevent sedimentation and accumulation of possible formed suspended particles in the
system. These can then be eliminated by partial filtration of system water or blow-down (controlled replacement of
system water with fresh make up water).
(*Sulfites in reaction with oxygen form sulfate ion in system water, due to which the corrosion potential of system water arises in time. In the event
that characteristics of heating system are such as to allow this occurrence the use of a polymer is recommended – consult with MAK CMC d.o.o.).
Type of substances for conditioning of heating system:
1. IRGATREAT MF CF5: prevents corrosion on metal surfaces by forming a protective film, it contains inhibitors for
copper corrosion and offers protection for aluminum elements in heating systems.
2. IRGATREAT CI 2001: substance for oxygen binding that does not contain sulfite, passivation of iron and copper surfaces.
3. IRGATRAT CI CS: substances for adjustment of pH value in system water.

parameters and active substances in make up water
and system water of heating systems.

IN HVAC SYSTEMS
Air humidification is one of the basic operations in HVAC systems.
Purpose: control of relative humidity (30 – 50 %) and air cooling (adiabatic humidification).
Humidification processes:
Adiabatic: spray and contact humidifiers,
pressurized, water-jet: water atomizer nozzles spray fine water droplets at high pressure, directly into air,
humidification with steam.
Treatment of make up water, which is added to the systems, is an important part of each of these processes, because
it influences also the quality of system water (water in collection tank in adiabatic processes). Adequate water
treatment prevents the formation of scale (clogging of nozzles, showers, contact packing, boilers for vapor generation),
corrosion of metal surfaces (spray chambers), pollution of rooms with particles (adiabatic and pressure humidification), bacteriologic pollution of the water system and as a result also air-conditioned rooms (adiabatic humidification).
Guidelines for water quality in HVAC systems are set by local legislation and various recommendations (for example:
VDI 3803), which is generalized and presented in Table 1.

Adiabatic humidification (evaporative cooling)
Adiabatic humidification is contact humidification between water and air without energy exchange. At the same time,
it also cools the air proportionally to the accumulated quantity of water vapour. The efficiency of humidification and
cooling depends on the available temperature of the dry thermometer and humidity of the air in the system. Humidification and cooling take place according to a psychrometric adiabatic line.
Contact air-water is usually achieved in two ways:
Water is sprayed counter current into air-flow (spray chambers)
Air and water are in contact at the surface of the wetted packing (plastics, originally also straw).
In both ways, water that does not evaporate into the air phase is collected in the tank under the spray chamber or
packing. Water losses are replaced in the collection tank and returned with recirculating pump back into the
humidification process.

Possible negative effects on the quality of circulating water and air quality in the HVAC system:
increasing salt concentration in circulating water and thereby increased tendency toward scale formation on spray
nozzles or surfaces of contact packing. By increasing salt concentration the possibility of space pollution with salt particles
from drops of water carried by the air also increases. It also increases the corrosion potential of circulating water.
Excessive microbiological pollution of system water.
Measures:
softening or blended-softening of make up water,
dosing of scale inhibitors and occasionally oxidizers to improve the microbiological conditions in the system water,
blow down of the system water (reduction of salts and particles concentration). In larger systems automatic
blow-down is recommended,

Pressurized and water-jet humidification
Water is sprayed directly into the conditioned air by high-pressure nozzles.
Air is thereby humidified and cooled.
Make up water treatment has to prevent the following:
formation of scale on spray nozzles,
particle load in the system; precipitation of remaining dissolved salts is a result of water evaporation. Particles are
deposited on surfaces in contact with conditioned air as dust.
Measures:
minimum required measure is softening or blended-softening of make-up water
HVAC systems requiring higher degree of system water quality utilize water demineralization with reverse osmosis.

Vapor humidification
This way requires the use of vapor produced with electric vapor generators for air humidification. Make up water
softening is hereby mandatory.
