SALISBURY & SHAFTESBURY CAR CLUB LTD Registered in England No. 1204384 FULL CHAT October 2014
Editorial Welcome members, September has been a very busy month for me, starting with competing at Wiscombe Park Hillclimb, where I beat the other Gilbern (an early GT1800), but where we were both beaten by a Zetec powered Westfield. Then again with the Gilbern I went to the Goodwood Revival, as a spectator. On leaving the classic car park Saturday night I went passed the campsite. There was a group of 7-‐8 people looking at the classic cars as they went pass. As I approached, suddenly a large 8, and 10 numbers were put up, with lots of thumbs up. Well pleased with my score, really made my day. Last weekend I competed at Charmouth Hillclimb, and now I am off to compete at Prescott this weekend, all in the Gilbern, hence an early Full Chat. Another reason to have an early Full Chat, is to remind you dear member your club membership is now due for renewal from the 1st of October. I’m happy to say Ted should be at club night next Tuesday 7th October to take your money, or send him a cheque in the post. Rally ace Dick “Paddy” Appleton, with his son Mark “Henry” Appleton in the co-‐driver’s seat, have been rallying in Belgium again, on the Westhoek Rally. They were seeded 8, but came a fantastic 2nd overall. Dick has sent me some great photos, which are included later in this newsletter Finally our Chairman went to the Silverstone BTCC as a sponsors guest last weekend, despite him telling me for years that circuit racing is boring!. Has he seen the light?, read his report to find out. See you at club night on Tuesday the 7th October All the Best Chris (All opinions expressed are only personal, and are not of the S&SCC committee). Hope you all had a nice hot September, to damn hot for my business! Not many
people thinking about heating oil at these temperatures.
Month started with an outing for the Scooby at Smeatherpe. After a successful
year so far was looking for a good result as the car had been running well. All
looked good until stage 5 when the turbo blew!! End of rally for us so someone
has now won the prize for stages completed by Mike and I this year.
Tried to order a new turbo for Caerwent towards the end of the month only to be
informed it would be at least a month for delivery! End of the season for us then
as the next event after that is the Regency Stages at the Bath & West. Mike and
I have decided to hold things until Jan next year and Brean as there are other
things to be done to the car and the fewer events I do the more pennies I have to
spend.
Mike and I had intended to go over to Caerwent to marshal but I had a late
invite to the BTCC round at Silverstone. So Will went in my place. I am sure Ed
who also attended will fill us all in with a report.
My trip to Silverstone was most enjoyable, invited by Exocet who sponsor Rob
Austin in an Audi. What a great day, good company and access all areas
including a start grid walk. Up close and personal and the girls were not bad
either!!
I have included some pics of the day how the other pit lane lives!!
I hear Chris has been very active in the Gilbern so look forward to some more
pics and results!!!
All the best,
Peter
Bodmin.

"MARSHALS CHAT"
Chief Marshal, Mike Gray, 07974 568107,
mikeg@derltd.co.uk
OCTOBER 2014.
September has seen our marshals out on a couple of events, firstly the
Primamotor Sport Stages at Smeatharpe on Sunday 7th September
2014.
This popular event had attracted a full entry plus reserves for this
ASWMC stage rally organised by Bournemouth & District Car Club.
With Peter and myself, competing it was good to see a number of
S&SCC members out marshalling from the club. Running the arrival
control & start line plus flying finish & stop/finish line controls on the
stages all day long.
Sally had travelled down with me in the service van to meet up with Gill
& John Parram, JJ & Di, Aaron and John Border.
With a full entry of over 60 cars to be put into the stage & received at the
finish end they had a very busy day, but as usual the S&SCC marshals
did a fine job.
Sunday 21st September 2014, saw a marshals training day at Thruxton
Raceway near Andover, this event was not very well attended mainly
due to prior arrangements. However, I did attend to keep the S&SCC
flag flying, this time the training looked at Stage incidents & Timing plus
accident & recovery of vehicles of vehicles and injured people etc with a
Rescue unit from Goodwood Circuit showing us their skills.
Four members travelled to MOD Caerwent on Sunday 28th September
to marshal & do 81 radio duties on the Patriot Stages Rally. Myself, Ed
Littlefield, Will Self and Sam (from Mere) journeyed over picking up
Richard Dyer in Frome on the way. Richard had recently been involved
in a serious accident and was unable to drive and had agreed to meet
some fellow Tavern MC members at Caerwent to marshal with.
This sealed surface stage rally had attracted a full entry of 100 cars +
reserves for the 6 stages totalling just about 80 miles. Running at
number 1 was Peter Lloyd in his full WRC Impreza. However, he retired
after only 1 stage feeling unwell.
S&SCC members, Mike Dunning and Jeff Talbot in car 86. Retired (we
think) after stage 4. Our marshalling/radio point on stages 1 & 2 saw us
manning 2 junctions where we positioned ourselves on top of 1 of the
‘blast banks’ which gave us a very good view point of the MOD site and
stages.
After stage 2 the event was stopped to allow the ambulance to collect a
marshal not feeling well along with the event doctor they waited nearly 2
hours just outside of the camp for a county ambulance this held the
event up considerably.
Stage 3 was started then almost immediately stopped and cancelled due
to car 4 on fire needing to be extinguished and recovered by the
recovery crews stages 4 ,5 & 6 then were changed to run without having
to stop the event any further. At the end of stage 4 a army convoy
needed to access the camp through our point and back again. The last 3
stages ran without too many problems other than broken cars in many
places.
Now for future events
An important one for us. 4th October 2104. Exmoor endurance rally in
the Somerset forest above Minehead this ERRC event has asked the
club to help with the daytime selectifs and evening sections finishing in
Taunton at about 11.30pm.
Saturday 25th October 2014 we have been asked to help out on the
Regis Rally in East Hampshire/West Sussex this HRCR event is always
a well run rally, with test starts and finishes and road time controls to
man. If you can help please contact me
And, finally, Saturday 8th November 2014 is our usual trip up to the
Tempest rally around the Basingstoke and Aldershot area. We have
been asked to man the finish controls on the Pavilion stage and also to
run the 81 radio system at this location. If you can help, please contact
me. (Transport maybe available).
All the best
