He often takes a camera along and his landscape photos reflect the beauty of each destination in a skillful way. Särkisalo & the sea According to Jesse, the opportunities for nature tourism in Salo are excellent all year round. Those who enjoy nature can for example hike, fish, go canoeing, rockclimbing, birdwatching, skiing or skating. Jesse’s favourite destination is the Teijo national park, which is suitable for both beginners or more experienced hikers. Walking in nature makes you feel refreshed and as a form of exercise hiking, is much more interesting than staring at the wall of the gym. Other natural attractions in Salo The area is well taken care of, there are several places for making bonfires and even good places for spending the night in a tent or a hut (of which there are altogether 7). The Teijo national park offers excellent swimming and fishing opportunities, e.g. at lake Matildanjärvi. It is also possible to find catch-size rainbow trout in Matildanjärvi, because they are stocked regularly. Vaisakko grove The Vaisakko natural reserve on the western shore on the Halikonlahti bay consists of forests growing on rocky hills and groves between them, typical to this area. The region’s broadleaf forests and huge oaks are unique and a home to many rare fungi and lichen species. Vaisakko is at its best in the springtime when the anemones bloom. 3. Outdoor activities, swimming and bird-watching: Vuohensaari is a great place to go for an evening walk, a swim or an excursion. There is also a popular bird-watching tower near Vuohensaari. 4. Canoeing: There are altogether about 130 km of canoeing routes in the Salo area. One good route starts from Kisko and passes through Perniö and the Latokartano rapids all the way to the sea near Särkisalo. 8 Salo 2015 Eat & sleep See & experience For children & families Aneriojärvi nature and culture trail The Aneriojärvi nature and culture trail is in Suomusjärvi, near the Kitula conurbanation. The nature trail mostly consists of duckboards since the area is prone to flooding. By the trail there are both a bird-watching tower and a bird-watching shelter built using ancient techniques. The trail consists of two parts: At the shores of the Aneriojärvi lake there is an approx. 1 km long nature trail you can walk and a cycling route passing through the farmlands, approx. 4 km long. Vuohensaari nature trail Vuohensaari island is in the Halikonlahti bay, a few kilometres from the centre of the city. Nowadays, Vuohensaari is an idyllic recreational area. The trail consists of 17 thematic entities. It is also suitable for families with children. VisitSalo.fi Shop & decorate 2. Rock climbing: Hyttyskallio and Toravuori are popular summer climbing places near Salo. In the winter Angelniemi is a fantastic ice climbing destination. Hyyppäränharju, Kultalähde and Särämäki The Hyyppärä esker area, which is a part of the Natura 2000 network, is an excellent place for a hike and also well suited for cyclists. The landscape is highly versatile, including eskers, swamps, springs, ponds, lakes, ravines, creeks and rocks. The esker area is also home to one of the biggest springs in Southern Finland, Kultalähde, and the highest point in Southwestern Finland, Särämäki. Meet & celebrate JESSE’S TIPS: 1. Hiking and camping: The Teijo national park offers activities for both beginners and more experienced hikers. The Teijo national park is also a great destination for a weekend trip! Viitankruunu historical trail At the Viitankruunu ancient monument site, there are three impressive Bronze Age burial cairns whose surroundings are maintained by the National Board of Antiquities. The furthest burial cairn offers a fantastic view to Halikonlahti bay. There is a parking area at the start of the trail. Live & enjoy During the summer months, Jesse sometimes drives straight to the national park after work, spends the night in a tent or hut and drives back to work in the morning because the distances are short and in the summertime nature is at its best. As an active nature enthusiast he recommends that not only visitors from elsewhere but also the inhabitants of Salo should head to the Teijo national park for a hike. Teijo is not only located near Salo, it is also easy to hike even with children, and is certain to offer memorable experiences! The market & events There are altogether about 50 km of marked hiking routes in the Teijo national park and the route lengths vary between 1-20 km. According to Jesse, the national park is ideal for nature lovers looking for a place to spend 1-2 days, because by combining routes even an experienced hiker can easily spend a couple of days in the park. 9 Teijo & Mansions & group excursions the ironworks villages Mathildedal Ironworks Unforgettable cultural tourism all year round in a bold ironworks milieu. See & experience For children & families The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs shield awarded to Salon Seurahuone is proof of the high quality of the food and services. When cooking, strong emphasis is placed on dishes that have been made from scratch with skill and passion, using local ingredients. The restaurant’s elegant menu changes with the seasons. When summer approaches, the dishes become lighter and fish, seasonal vegetables and Finnish berries are used. Shop & decorate Meat products such as pheasant, lamb and Hereford meat are bought from local farms and the fish comes from the Kemiö and Särkisalo regions. The vegetables and berries used in the dishes come from local producers, while various herbs and decorative flowers are grown in their own garden, Maija tells us. Salon Seurahuone can also boast the most extensive wine selection in the city, mentions Kalle who is also a sommelier. The restaurant can boast a list full of high quality wines from the new and the old world alike. The beer selection includes the products of many small local breweries such as the Mathildedal village brewery. Meet & celebrate Numerous cafés offer coffee shop culture and small everyday luxuries such as freshly ground coffee and locally produced delicacies. During the summer, the marketplace in Salo is the place to be. On summer Thursdays, the evening market offers many cafés, ice cream stands, traders and of course top-notch performances as well as a flea market for children. Salon Seurahuone is a family business that has been owned by the same family since 2007. The restaurant is currently being run by mom Eija Hämäläinen and her children, Kalle Hämäläinen and Maija Lehtinen. As the parents of small children, Kalle and Maija think it’s important to share the responsibility of running the business. Sharing the work load among more people also helps keep the passion strong. During the summer months, the restaurant’s inviting terrace is in heavy use. The terrace will also serve grilled lunches, Street Food and cocktails, Kalle says. ”Welcome to our idyllic restaurant in a beautiful wooden house, Live & enjoy S alo’s restaurants invite you to enjoy genuine tastes, traditional home cooking or flavours from cuisines / kitchens and cafés around the world! He is from Savonlinna and is an entrepreneur in the communications sector. Toni has extensive experience in a diverse array of sport-related media work, e.g. on TV, and even in his free time he likes to participate actively in a variety of sports-related volunteer work. The market & events Salo is an excellent location for those entrepreneurs who need to travel a lot because of their work. Good connections make it easy to travel between cities in Southern Finland. A positive impression of the city and its inhabitants also affected Toni’s decision to move to Salo. It is easy to get to know the people here and networking is effortless. Eat & sleep Salo also has excellent sports facilities and it could be called a Finnish paradise in terms of sports and exercise services. The city has a lot to offer to those who love ballgames - at the junior level as well. In addition to ball game lovers, Salo is great for those who enjoy skating, orienteering, riding, swimming or hiking. For children & families In addition, Salohalli offers exciting experiences to those who love to watch ball games. Salohalli is one of the best sports halls in Finland and for example the Salo women’s volleyball team has increased Salo’s international reputation. Shop & decorate The wide variety of cafés and restaurants in Salo as well as the active marketplace also deserve praise. Toni’s favourite places include the Kuiro bakery, café Toinen keksi, restaurant Vilho and the recently opened Nepalese restaurant Bhanchha Ghar, which in his opinion is a great addition to the Asian restaurants in Salo. As a new inhabitant, the amount of events taking place in Salo has also been surprising to Toni. Toni is already looking forward to the coming summer. Even though he will spend a part of it abroad on business trips, he hopes he’ll have time to visit the famous evening market at some point. Live & enjoy Meet & celebrate S alo is a good place to live. Living costs are affordable, the location is great and you can get from the city to the middle of nature in no time. Live conveniently in the middle of the city and the services, in natural surroundings, in a residential area in a detached house or a row house, in the clean countryside, the idyllic ironworks village or close to your hobbies, with for example horse riding stables or a golf course next door. See & experience There are also several golf courses and the golf season starts earlier than elsewhere in Finland. Meri-Teijo Golf opens in February, and that’s where Toni started his golf season while others were still skiing in Teijo. 70 Salo 2015 VisitSalo.fi 71 Mansions & Teijo & group excursions the ironworks villages A The market & events Särkisalo & the sea nna Purtsi is a professional photographer who lived in Maarianhamina for several years and then moved back to Salo, where she was born. She has worked as a professional photographer for more than fifteen years, the last five of which she has been an entrepreneur. Anna mostly focuses on portrait photography, offering her services to both private persons and companies. All in all, in the eyes of a returning migrant the city is bright and lively. The city is full of opportunities for permanent inhabitants, summer inhabitants and visitors alike. In short - Salo has something to offer to everyone. See & experience For children & families Karhumäki in Särkisalo fulfills the wishes of those who yearn to live near the sea. Choose your favourite location, near the sea. Your neighbours are also likely to be families with the same aspirations, because in Särkisalo the boating season is temptingly longer since the piers, harbours and navigable routes are not far away. Karhumäki is also ideal for people working from home. Shop & decorate The Salo marketplace is top-notch, and the evening markets in Salo on Thursdays attract visitors even from other cities. According to Anna, the Salo marketplace gives the city a refreshing summer feeling. She also finds the presence of the sea as well as the beautiful nature around the city very attractive. Vuohensaari, Särkisalo, the Teijo ironworks area and the Teijo national park are places that really highlight the beauty of nature and the sea. In Salo, you can buy a house with the price of a one-room flat in Helsinki. The city offers a versatile selection of lots and the prices start from 200 € - prices per square meter start from 0,20 €. You can choose whether you want to build in the city or in one of its nearby conurbanations - e.g. Särkisalo, Suomusjärvi or Halikko. Think of all the possibilities offered by the Lehtometsä and Tyrynmäki areas in Suomusjärvi. Schools and other services are closeby and the distance to Helsinki is only 90 km. It is easy to commute to workplaces in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and the area is also ideal for those working from home. Meet & celebrate Salo has a lot to offer in terms of culture, and especially the art museum, Veturitalli, receives praise from her. The art exhibitions at Veturitalli are always high-quality and attract visitors from everywhere in Finland. The city’s music scene is diverse as well, and various musical performances and concerts are organized throughout the year. Salo is a comfortable and affordable place to live. Hirvikallio in Halikko is a beautiful area that’s great for every member of the family - services and hobbies are easily available at the centre of Halikko and the centre of Salo is easy to reach as well. From Hirvikallio it is also easy to go west - for example, if you need to travel to Turku for work, the distance is about 50 kilometres. Live & enjoy She is also pleased about how active the local business community and the city’s services for businesses are. In her opinion, Yrityssalo and the various entrepreneur communities, such as Salon yrittäjät, support both big and small companies in many ways and help the companies network. Eat & sleep The decision to move back to Salo was easy to make since she knows the city and has a lot of friends and relatives here. According to Anna, Salo is also a large market area with good connections to both Turku and Helsinki. Salo is a growing city and all of the services are easily available in the city centre. The city centre is a compact and functional area where it’s easy to find everything you need.
