Principal's Message
As we prepare this newsletter, we remain
uncertain about the current labour situation
and the impact it may have on our school
opening. No matter what happens with the
start of the school year, we hope this newsletter will provide important information for parents and students . It
includes important dates, club information, our fee schedule, and the
dates and times for locker sign-up and counselor appointments. Of
course, all of this is dependent upon the resolution of the labour situation.
It’s important for parents and students to utilize all of our communication tools: our school district website at SurreySchools.ca, our
SchoolLink app, the Surrey_Schools Twitter account, the Frank Hurt
website at wwwfrankhurt.ca , our new app (see page 7) the FrankHurtSchool Twitter account.
Student schedules will be mailed to your homes in August. If your address has changed, please e-mail the changes to
frankhurt@surreyschools.ca
I’m hopeful that things will be resolved soon and that we will be back
at school soon.

Student Timetable Changes -- and -- Counsellor Appointments
On the first day of classes you will receive your timetable. You may
notice changes that were necessary due to summer school and
provincial exam results and class balancing.
This year, there will be no appointments made by
telephone for returning Frank Hurt students.
In August, counsellors will ONLY see students who:

These are the times the counsellors will be available for required course changes. Please come to the counselling
area during these times and our assistant will give you an appointment time.

Students are asked to come to school at the specified times
shown below to pay their 2014/2015 school fees of $25 for
Grades 8 - 12 or $70 (includes grad fee) for Grade 12s and
choose a locker.
Students who do this before the start of school will be able to select their
own locker and locker partner.
Students must have all previous debts paid in order to choose their lockers.

Valuables: KEEP THEM AT HOME !!!
There may be times when students wish to have valuable electronics at
school. We would like to remind students to check with their teachers
for individual classroom policies regarding the use of any electronic devices. We also want to remind students to be extremely careful about the
storage of these devices. Sometimes students who leave their devices in
an unlocked locker, leave them unattended in a classroom or let a friend
borrow them may have the devices lost or stolen. The school is not responsible for the recovery or replacement of these devices and reminds
students to be careful with them or to leave them at home.
NOTE: Students will not be issued their new Go-Card unless their $25.00 student fee
has been paid !!
School Photos and Go Cards – Wed., Sept. 17th
This year, student photos will be taken on Wednesday, September 17 th. All students
must have their photo taken in order to receive Frank Hurt school I.D. – there is no
charge for getting a picture taken for a school Go Card, however, students will NOT
receive their Go-Card unless they have paid their student fee for 2014/2015. Information regarding photo day and Artona Photography is included in this mail out. Photo re-takes are scheduled for Wednesday, October 15th.
Class Attendance at Frank Hurt
We know there is a strong relationship between good attendance and success at school. Students are expected to be
at school on time (8:25 am) and to attend classes regularly. Failure to adhere to these simple rules may result in detentions and/or suspension from school. Parents … if your son or daughter has to arrive at school late, leave school
early, or miss a school day, please call our office at (604) 590-1311 prior to 8:30 am or write a note for your son or
daughter and have them bring it to the office, at which time we will issue them an “excused late-slip”.
STING - Frank Hurt's new Smartphone Agenda App
A new smartphone app will be up and running for the start of the school year. This app will be an exciting
new way for students and parents to keep track of what's going on at school and to keep on top of homework. The new app, called STING will be available to all parents and students as part of the school
fees. For use with smartphones, tablets or iPod Touch, the app will be available free from Apple's App
Store and Google Play for Android; otherwise it can also be accessed from home and school computers
using an Apple Safari or Google Chrome web browser at http://sting.school2go.ca
The QR code will direct your device right to the app.

The agenda is a wonderful resource for students AND parents – it has information on everything you’ve ever wanted and needed to know about Frank Hurt’s procedures, programs, rules, bell schedules, etc. Students are encouraged to use their agenda
on a daily basis to help them schedule homework and manage their busy schedules.

Sometimes extreme weather conditions or other unusual circumstances can cause a school closure
on short notice. In the event of a potential school closure during the 2012-2013 school year, please

Surrey school closure information may also be broadcast on the Weather Channel and local TV stations. Whenever possible,
the Surrey School District will post such information on its web site at www.surreyschools.ca.
Even if all schools are open, many schools can face conditions and circumstances unique to a specific neighbourhood. Therefore, the district encourages and respects the importance of parental decision-making regarding accessing a school, based on
parents’ own location and individual circumstances, their route to school and overall attention to safety.
Frank Hurt Dress Regulations
At Frank Hurt Secondary it is important to have an atmosphere that is both safe and respectful. To that end, student clothing
is expected to be appropriate for both a learning and working environment. The purpose of the school’s dress code is not to
impede students’ style or freedom of expression, however, student attire should not be distracting or offensive in any way.
Students are required to dress in an acceptable manner suited to the activity in which they are involved. Hats and bandanas
are not to be worn in the school.
Inappropriate attire includes:







Designs/promotion of drugs and alcohol
Sexually explicit or suggestive designs
Profanity or violence
Threatening language or violent imagery
Derogatory and/or discriminatory language
Clothing must sufficiently cover underwear, cleavage, bottoms, midriffs (front and back) and upper thighs
Protective clothing may be required in certain courses, at the teacher’s discretion (ie: aprons, coveralls, etc.)
Home and Emergency Contact Updates
Parents are responsible for ensuring that the school has all the correct contact
numbers and correct names on our emergency contact database. If these numbers
or names change throughout the school year, it is extremely important that the
school be contacted and informed of the change. Otherwise, in the event of an
emergency or if we need to contact parents, this may not be possible. Thank you for
your cooperation.

Parent/Teacher Interviews – October 23rd
Communication and cooperation between the home and the school are key ingredients to
your child’s success. Whether exchanging information or identifying and solving common
concerns, parent/teacher interviews can be valuable learning experiences. Parent/
teacher interviews will be held in the Frank Hurt gym on October 23th, 2014. No appointments are necessary. More information will be available in the next newsletter. Please
plan to attend.
PAC Meeting
Wednesday, October 8th – 7:00 p.m. in the Library
Frank Hurt is an exciting and dedicated school. One sure way to become involved
with your student’s education is by attending the PAC meetings. The PAC meetings are
held the first Wednesday of most months in the school library at 7:00 pm (check the student agenda calendar or the Frank Hurt website @ www.surreyschools.ca/frankhurt).
Parents, this is an excellent opportunity to meet the administrators,
other parents, and to find out what is happening at your child’s school.

Appendix: Legislation and School Fees
Instruction is provided free of charge to all students registered in a school's education program sufficient to
meet the general requirements of graduation, and we provide free of charge any resource material necessary to
participate in that program. The School Act permits the charging of fees for certain items. In Surrey secondary
schools, the following structure applies through Board Policy 9802 related to fees and any costs for students or
families. We communicate our fees to parents and students of on an annual basis.
Basic School Supplies
Students will need to provide their own basic supplies and equipment for their own personal use at
school. This includes supplies such as paper, writing tools, calculators, notebooks, gym strip, sewing
kits, and some other items needed for various electives.
Inability to pay fees
The district's hardship policy is an important part of our fees. No student will be denied the ability to
participate in any part of the school's educational programs as a result of an inability to pay. Frank Hurt
has a process whereby fees may be waived because of financial hardship. The process incorporates the
principles of fairness, confidentiality, and sensitivity, while maintaining family respect and dignity. We
ask parents or guardians to contact the school counselor in these cases.
Student Activity Fee
This fee is charged to all students. At Frank Hurt, the breakdown of where the funds are directed is as
follows:
Athletics, intramurals & extracurricular activities - $9
Student Council and other student clubs - $8
Locks, magnets, student agenda - $5
Schoolwide events and special presentations - $3
Athletics
Participation in athletics and organized sports is an important part of a Frank Hurt’s school culture. A significant portion of the costs associated with athletics goes to the provincial and local bodies that organize
athletic events. The activity fee portion is used for supplementing tournament and referee fees for each
sport and the cost of the annual athletic banquet. In addition, fees for various sports cover the cost of
referees and tournament fees. Some of our sports are more costly to run than others. Basketball is a
longer season than most sports with more referees and tournaments and incurs a higher cost than other sports. For cheerleading the fees are used for team gear, offsite facility rental and athletic fees. The
football program fees include the costs for referees, safety gear and Football BC fees. The ice hockey
team costs include referees and ice rental. Every attempt is made to keep costs to a minimum.
Certification
Some programs include a component that offers an external certificate recognizing unique qualifications.
Examples are St. John's First Aid, Food Safe, Superhost, and Worldhost. These certificates help prepare
students for employment and schools charge a fee to recover the cost of certification. The cost to the
student will match the cost to the school for the certificate.
Examinations
Some programs offer external examinations where students can obtain credit for post-secondary institutions as a result of successfully completing the exam. International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement are examples. Where students take these exams, a fee is charged to recover the cost of the examination and the fee shall be less than or equal to the actual cost of the exam.

Field trips
Students may be charged fees for expenses such as transportation, accommodation, meals, entrance
fees and equipment rentals for optional field trips, or other extracurricular outings or events. Students
will not be charged fees for any field studies/field trips where attendance is mandatory as part of a
course or program.
Graduation Ceremonies
The graduation ceremonies are important traditions that represent the end of a student's school experience. Costs do apply as these extracurricular events are hosted in a variety of venues. No student will
be denied the ability to participate in the commencement ceremony due to an inability to pay the cost.
Every effort is made to keep costs to a minimum and we do not compile an ongoing surplus as a result
of monies collected to host a graduation ceremony. At Frank Hurt the cost includes the commencement
and grad supplies and activities, and other commencement ceremony expenses. The cost of the Graduation Dinner and Dance is separate from this fee and is sold at the cost of the venue and dinner. In
2013, the cost of the Dinner and Dance was $80 per student. The Dry Grad Event is a parent-run event
that follows the Dinner and Dance. Tickets are sold by parent sponsors at a cost of the event.
Materials consumed in a course
In courses that consume materials (e.g. art, cooking, woodworking, metalwork, science) schools can
only charge for materials or goods that are surplus to what would be necessary for the student to meet
the expected outcomes in a course. If a student is going beyond the basic requirements of a course and
creating projects for personal use (e.g. creating a table of mahogany rather than plywood), then the
student may bring their own materials from home or the cost for the materials for these enhanced projects may be recovered through a fee. Examples at Frank Hurt include optional fees and materials for
home economics and project materials in woodworking and tech ed that go beyond the basic supplies.
Musical Instruments
A board may charge a fee for the rental of a musical instrument for the student's personal use or the
student may provide their own instrument when he/she is part of a fine arts class or a course with a
musical component.
Students in Apprenticeship Programs
Industry Training Authority apprenticeship, fees may be charged for the rental of tools, equipment and
materials necessary for participation in the program or the Board may require the student to purchase
his or her own tools, equipment and materials required for the program.
Textbook or Calculator Deposits
In accordance with the School Act, the Board may require deposits for educational resource materials,
such as textbooks, novels and other resource materials. The Board will refund all of the deposit to the
student upon return of the educational resource materials in good condition. Students will be advised of
terms of the deposit at the time the deposit is required. Waiver procedures must be in place for all deposits.
Uniforms
Students sometimes need special clothing (uniforms for band or for cafeteria) to participate in an educational program. These clothes are not a requirement to participate in a program but are logical savings for parents where clothes could be soiled or damaged in shops or the cafeteria. If the clothes (e.g.
band or choir uniforms) are owned by the school, a fully refundable deposit may be required to ensure
the return in good condition.
