OCTOBER 26, 2014 Surrender to God’s will to receive grace (by Bebe Kennedy) For the last 50 years or so, there has been greater assertion of individual freedom and rights. The women’s movement was initiated, gained much support and made a profound change in attitudes and lives. While individuals in virtually all walks of life are claiming their rights and fighting for them, women and minorities have experience very deep alterations in patterns of living. Racial discrimination has been greatly diminished; occupations other than nursing, teaching and secretarial work are successfully filled by women; and personal abuse is tolerated less. Attitudinal and legal changes have evoked many benefits for countless persons. However, there is one flip side, which is an underlying belief that proclaims: “Nobody is going to tell me what to do.” It can be difficult to surrender our will to the Lord. I have heard this expressed in statements such as, “That is one aspect of Catholic doctrine I do not accept” and “God gave me intelligence, and I am going to think for myself regarding Church matters.” Full surrender is still adhered to by those making the effort, but for many it seems to be only a memory, if, indeed it was ever initially embraced. There are countless “cafeteria Catholics” today who pick and choose what aspects of their faith they decide to follow. There is no doubt that we have strayed from submitting our hearts and minds to the Lord. Pride and self-love can be barriers that prevent us from loving God as we should and from fully surrendering to him. What better example do we have than that of Mary who, after being asked by the Angel Gabriel to be the mother of God, humbly stated, “Let it be done as you say”? Only concerned about pleasing God, she was not worried about the possible ramifications her consent would have on her personally. Our aim in life is to keep our eyes on the Lord, to be constantly alert to how he might be directing us. It is difficult to trust when adversity strikes, to admit that God knows what is best. Trials and tribulations are inevitable and often very hard to bear. But instead of complaining, it is helpful to perceive our “crosses” as opportunities sent from God. Surrendering to them moment to moment, hour by hour and day by day, produces many graces and leads to happiness. (to be continued)
