John Kline Coming Soon
Monday, October 27th begins our “Engage” initiative. Be prepared to see information posted and
different items appearing around the church. On Sunday, you were introduced to Brother John
Kline. His circuit riders will be in touch with every church member in the community and around
the world. Some circuit riders will appear in person and some will make use of the internet to pay
a visit to each home represented at NCCoB.
Brother Kline made a name for himself by visiting and caring for people of both sides of the Civil
War. He and his horse Nell traveled over 30,000 miles together in an effort to bring healing and
reconciliation to John’s world. We want to do the same in our world! Congregational
representatives will be visiting you – maybe not on horseback – but still desiring time to “Engage”
you in conversation about our ministry here.
The culmination of our festivities will be our Commitment Sunday Breakfast on November 16th.
Please note that tickets will be available for a chance to win valuable door prizes chosen
especially for you! Please reserve that date on your calendars now. Please also reserve
November 15th for Mark Yaconelli. Please notice the display in the lower narthex for more
information.
I want to thank Ray Lowe and the Finance Committee for their many hours of hard and
imaginative work in preparing this venture.
The “Engage” Experience comes as a result of the Leadership Team wanting to engage the
congregation in planning for the next five years. We are looking to bringing in Jonathan Shively,
the Church of the Brethren Congregational Life Executive Director, to assist in forging a new
reality for this community of faith. It will take your engage-ment in the process to make it a
meaningful and worthwhile process.
In the meantime, keep a look out for John Kline!
We are still collecting cans for recycling. Please save your discarded aluminum cans and either bring them to the
church and place them in the barrel under the coat rack in the Fellowship Hall by the stairs, or if you a large
amount and need someone to pick them up, call Tony White.
Did you know?

The aluminum beverage can returns to the grocer’s shelf as a new, filled can in as little as 90 days
after collection, re-melting, rolling, manufacturing and distribution. Consumers could purchase the
same recycled aluminum can from the grocer’s shelf every 13 weeks or 4 times a year.
We use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum soda cans every year.
Used aluminum beverage cans are the most recycled item in the U.S., but other types of
aluminum, such as siding, gutters, car components, storm window frames, and lawn furniture can
also be recycled.
Do your part and help keep America clean!

Nursery care givers are needed for the Sunday
school hour. Right now we don’t have children using
the nursery during that time, but we need people to
be on call in case the need is there. There are only 4
people on the list and they are on call every month.
We could also use more volunteers during worship.
Please let the office know if you are willing to play
during Sunday school and/or worship.
Our love and deepest sympathy go out to
the family of Marjorie Petry who passed
on September 26. Marjorie was the wife
of Dan Petry and the daughter-in-law of
Shirley Petry.
BCU is in need of volunteers to help with the sign-ups
for the Christmas Basket ministry. Dates and times
are: Wednesday, October 29 from 12 - 8, then in
November on Wednesdays from 4 - 5:30 and Fridays
from 12 - 2. If you can help, contact Robyn Anderson
at 620-9627. If you know of a family that is need of
assistance this Christmas, please let them know of
these times and dates. Further information is on the
bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall.
There is still time to get your registration in to attend the Mark Yaconelli
workshop on Saturday, November 15. This workshop will focus on
practices and strategies for creating a local, personal storytelling series that
strengthens community, heals shame, cultivates compassion, and
relationships. Through presentation, ritual, contemplative processes, and
narrative exercises participants will develop the skills and practices for
creating their own community storytelling series. Mark speaks and leads
storytelling events each year for various non-profit organizations including
Compassion International, and the 2013 Annual Conference of the
Church of the Brethren. Mark Yaconelli is a writer, speaker, retreat leader,
spiritual director, community activist, youth worker, storyteller, disco
dancer, husband, and father. He is the co-founder and program director
for the Center for Engaged Compassion at Claremont School of Theology
which seeks to heal broken people and communities through
contemplation, creativity, and compassion. Cost for the day is $20
(includes lunch). Registration forms are available in the office.
