PURBECK Film festival seventeenth year eighteenth year 10 - 25 October 2014 Purbeck Film Festival 2014 Our focus this year is on Italian Cinema and with good reason, for over the years the Italian film industry has won more Oscars for best foreign film than any other country, not to mention an impressive host of Palmes d'Or. You will find eighteen of the finest of these films in our programme this year. The festival also presents a bird's eye view of the best of British cinema leavened of course with a choice selection from world cinema: six from France, three from Australia and some beguiling tales from Norway, Denmark, India and Iran. There are also four brilliant animations which I hope you will enjoy. All this is backed up by our special exhibition at Durlston Castle which includes visuals from Italian cinema and exhibits loaned from Aardman, showing how the hilarious animated characters from Creature Comforts were made. Times have moved on since La Dolce Vita was everyone's signal Italian film. Maybe we are less mesmerised by the glitz and glamour of the life it portrayed, or is it that we are just that much older? You have a chance to decide when you see our selection. I like to think it is because we have grown accustomed to the good life here in Purbeck every day of the year. Lady Kate Cotton President of the Purbeck Film Festival Festival Venues The unique Rex Cinema in Wareham, under the ownership of Purbeck Film Charitable Trust, is the main Festival venue and a nostalgic viewing experience, although right up to date with its digital projection and new sound system. Each section shows how differing national styles might deal with the theme of the eternal triangle, husband, wife and wife's lover. Critics praised the expert observation of film styles, and the film was Oscar nominated. With this entertaining start to the festival we are fortunate enough to have the director, Christopher Miles (brother of Sarah Miles, star of the film) to introduce the film. (Christopher Miles, UK 1963, 29 mins) followed by OPENING GALA TICs and the Rex. - film to be announced see our website, 5 Purbeck Film Festival 2014 8.00pm - Lighthouse, Poole - Adult £8.00, Child/Student £5.50, Senior £6.50 IL CONFORMISTA The Conformist 15 Jean-Louis Trintignant plays Clerici, the titular conformist who’s desperate to fit in with the prevailing mood of fascism sweeping 1930s Italy. After joining a paramilitary group he’s assigned to assassinate a subversive professor who taught him at college. Combining the execution order with his honeymoon, he takes his new wife to liberal Paris but finds himself haunted by indecision as he falls for the professor’s irresistible bohemian wife. A potent mix of sex, psychology, politics and visual extravagance, The Conformist is one of the truly great films of the 1970s. With introduction. (Bernado Bertolucci, Italy 1970, 111 mins) Saturday 11th October Treat yourself to a day in Venice, a double bill including buffet lunch From 11.30am - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £18.50 for double bill and lunch A DAY IN VENICE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT VENICE, ITALY and FILM with John Julius Norwich and Christopher Miles John Julius Norwich, diplomat, historian, prolific author of travel, literary and architectural works including 'A History of Venice', and 'Paradise of Cities, Venice and its 19th century Visitors', and presenter of some 30 TV documentaries will be engaged in conversation by his old friend and colleague, Christopher Miles, British film director, producer and screenwriter. Perhaps best known for The Virgin and The Gypsy and The Priest of Love as well as our opening, Oscar-nominated short, The Six-Sided Triangle, Christopher is Professor Emeritus of Film and TV at the Royal College of Art and winner of the Golden Globe and many prizes from international film festivals. The conversation will be followed by an opportunity for Q and A. We are extremely grateful that this unique event is made possible through the Dick Odgers' Memorial Fund. At 1.00pm the conversation will be followed by an Italian inspired buffet lunch provided by Love Cake (of High Street, Swanage) in the Rex auditorium and bar. 6 Purbeck Film Festival 2014 The afternoon will proceed to the Venice-based film: BREAD AND TULIPS PG-13 Courtesy of Adriena Chiesa Enterprises, Italy. Rosalba, a young housewife from Pescara, gets left behind on a bus trip and decides to make her own way home. On the way she gets to Venice and here she finds love, life and happiness. A simple story, but one told with humour and a wonderful soundtrack! A great uplifting film, not to be missed! (Silvio Soldini, Italy 2000, 114 mins) (subtitles) If you are still in the Venetian mood, stay to watch the 6.30pm screening of the Italian documentary, Theorema Venezia, The Venice Syndrome. 6.00pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50 THEOREMA VENEZIA The Venice Syndrome Venice is pure romance. But the world's most beautiful city turns into a ghost town at nightfall. Entire quarters stand empty, their structures merely providing a myth to serve business interests. This fascinating, and rather sad, documentary shows what remains of Venetian life and the impact of vast cruise ships. (Andreas Pichler, Italy/Germany 2012, 82 mins) 8.30pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50 IL CAPITALE UMANO Human Capital (cert tbc) Based on an American novel by Stephen Amidon, and originally set in Connecticut, this is translated to the industrial north of Italy, and concerns two families whose destinies are tied together by a road accident. An engrossing and anguishing thriller. (Paolo Virzi, Italy 2013, 109 mins) (subtitles) 3.00pm - Lighthouse, Poole - Adult £6.50, Child/Student £5.00, Senior £5.50 ERNEST and CELESTINE U On Aw Introduced by Paul Hilton AUB While rummaging through the town’s dustbins, Ernest the bear finds sleeping mouse Celestine and is dissuaded from eating her. The pair are our introduction to the parallel surface world of the bears and the underground world of the mice, both of which prove hostile. An Oscar nominee in the category of best animation feature this is one of the most visually pleasing and unique animated experiences you could have in a long, long time. (Stéphane Aubier, France 2012, 80 mins) 7 Purbeck Film Festival 2014 ANIMATION WORKSHOP Durlston Country Park Learning Centre £15 to include materials and refreshments 1.30pm Registration; 2.00pm to 4.00pm Workshop Learn how to make your own animations in this special workshop led by Richard Haynes Stop Motion Animator/Senior Lecturer at Arts University Bournemouth. (Franco Zeffirelli, Italy/UK 1999, 117 mins) 7.00pm - Little Red Roaster Parkstone - £6.00 PROFUMO DI DONNA Scent of a Woman (cert tbc) On Unlike the American remake starring Al Pacino, which slides into sentimentality and rousing speeches the original is neither kinder nor gentler. It displays a more hard edged approach to a blind, embittered army officer (played with hearty machismo by Vittorio Gassman) who tours Italy with his young aid in order to sate his libidinous appetites and bring his life to a kind of closure. He's a crass old man, hiding his bitterness and loneliness behind bravado and sex. Tickets from Little Red Roaster, Station Road, Parkstone BH14 8UB or call 01202 240450. Refreshments available from 6.00pm. (Dino Risi, Italy 1974, 103 mins) (subtitles) 9.00pm - Shelley Theatre, Bournemouth £10 including performance BOURNEMOUTH ARTS BY THE SEA FESTIVAL What fate became the fifty brides of Bournemouth, last seen disappearing over the horizon in 2013? The story continues with Resurrection of the Sea Brides, a gothic spectacular in the historic Shelley Theatre and grounds. Artist Zerelda Sinclair, once described as the ‘wicked stepmother of Bournemouth’, presents a new performance inspired by the ancient Venetian ‘Marriage of the Sea’ ritual. Featuring haunting choral soundscapes by Ali Sharpe and Language, Timothy!, associate artists Kate O’Malley and Denise Poote, and fifty local women young and old. Not for the faint hearted. For the full Gothic experience, a screening of Ken Russell's post-psychedelic horror film will follow the performance. 8 9 Purbeck Film Festival 2014 THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM 18 An archeologist discovers a skull in the ruins of a convent, and sets off a chain of events connected to the legend of a dragon-like ‘worm’ seemingly worshipped as a god. Named the D’ampton worm in the film, those of a Geordie background might recognise the Lambton worm, an old legend of those parts. A real Ken Russell movie!! Tickets from www. artsbournemouth.org.uk/festival. (Ken Russell, UK 1988, 93 mins) The fourth Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival presents an extraordinary visitor experience, offering the arts to a wide audience through free and ticketed events and unique performances in unusual places and spaces in Bournemouth. 7.30pm - Stoborough Village Hall - £6.00 UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN 12A Chrissy Widmer writes: An inspiring and delightful romantic comedy/drama which follows a writer in her mid 30's (Diane Lane) who is struggling to write a book after her recent divorce. Not knowing what to do with her life, Frances decides she needs time away from her problems. While on a holiday to Italy she is captivated by the beautiful Tuscan countryside. So inspired, she impulsively buys a dilapidated villa and fully embraces the new friends and adventure she experiences while restoring it. Tickets from 01929 554113 or Discover Purbeck. Refreshments and Purbeck Ice Cream available before the film. (Audrey Wells, USA 2003, 113 mins) Sunday 12th October 7.15pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50 A Special Screen Bites Evening THE LUNCHBOX Dabba PG Aw Set in Mumbai, where a (usually) highly efficient system exists for delivering lunchboxes to workers. A mistake connects a young housewife and an older man, who build a world together through notes in the lunchbox. Subtle, simple and fresh! (Ritesh Batra, India 2013, 104 mins) (in Hindi and English) 8.00pm - Lighthouse, Poole - Adult £8.00, Child/Student £5.50, Senior £6.50 LE CONSEGUENZE DELL'AMORE The Consequences of Love 15 Aw In a Swiss hotel, an Italian businessman named Titta Di Girolamo sits silently, alone in the window of the café as he’s done every day for eight years. So what, exactly, is he doing? The glittering, mustsee Consequences Of Love stars Toni Servillo as the mysterious 50 year old resident. He sits apart, impeccable and impenetrable; he smokes and he waits. And so do we - but not for long as Signore Girolamo has secrets everywhere. The plot unfolds with great elegance and the genre remains a mystery for almost an hour but then plays out with a brilliant flair for the unexpected. With introduction. (Paolo Sorrentino, Italy 2004, 100 mins) (subtitles) 10 Purbeck Film Festival 2014 7.30pm - Studland Village Hall - £6.00 ROMAN HOLIDAY U Ow The film that made the world fall in love with Audrey Hepburn. She plays a Princess, bored with her stifling world of protocol, who goes awol in Rome and by chance is found asleep on a bench by journalist Joe (Gregory Peck). The incognito princess blossoms as she embraces another sort of life for a day followed by Joe, on the track of an exclusive, and his photographer - a terrific performance by Eddie Albert. Shot on location, unusual at the time, and so described by one critic as "Hollywood's answer to neo-realism". Tickets from Swanage TIC. Purbeck Ice Cream available. (William Wyler, USA 1953, 118 mins) Be sure to visit the our Exhibition at Durlston Castle to see Roman Holiday memorabilia. Monday 13th October 7.15pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50 WAKOLDA (cert tbc) Aw Patrons' Choice - Sarah & John Wootton, Tom's Field Camping Set in 1960, this is the true story of an Argentine family who lived with Josef Mengele without knowing his true identity, and of a girl who fell in love with one of the most notorious Nazi fugitives. Fascinating and moving. (Lucia Puenzo, Argentina 2013, 93 mins) (subtitles) 2.30pm & 7.45pm - Pavilion Dance - £6.00 (two for £10) LA TERRA TREMA U Blending its operatic qualities with its intense realism the story tells of the plight of the fishermen in a small Sicilian fishing village of Aci-Trezza. Told through the eyes of the Valastro family they become victims of the middlemen who steal their profits. Given today's financial crisis in Italy, the film still resonates with how the unscrupulous privileged class takes advantage of the working-class and how the only way to overcome such greed is by the people rallying together to fight back against exploitation. Tickets from 01202 203630 or www.pdsw.org.uk or Discover Purbeck. (Luchino Visconti, 1948, 160 mins) (subtitles) 7.30pm - St Mary's Church, Swanage - £7.00 THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST MATTHEW U On Described as "one of the most effective films on a religious theme ever made", Pasolini's Jesus is often depicted as a man angered by social injustice, using parables to make anti-establishment points attracting both followers and the ire of the ruling Pharisees. The film's beauty derives from its simplicity - no flashy effects, the dialogue using only the words of Matthew and the nonprofessional actors for the cast. The Italian landscape makes a convincing backdrop and Pasolini's use of an astoundingly diverse mix of music enhances the whole. Tickets from Swanage TIC and on the door. Refreshments from 7.00pm. (Pier Paolo Pasolini, Italy 1964, 137 mins) (subtitles) 11 Purbeck Film Festival 2014 7.30pm - Square & Compass, Worth Matravers - £6.00 PAINTED ANGELS aka Prairie Doves 15 Cath Newman's Desert Island Flick. This 1998 film debunks the myth of the good-time Saloon girl prostitutes portrayed in “Westerns”. Based on diaries and newspaper reports of the time, it describes the true emotional and physical poverty of the thousands of women whose only chance to make a living was to sell their souls and bodies in godforsaken frontier towns. British director Jon Sanders allows us a glimpse into the life of an 1870’s brothel, run by hard-asnails madame Annie Ryan played to perfection by Brenda Fricker. This slow moving, thought provoking and sometimes heartbreaking film is beautifully detailed and flawlessly acted, bringing us close to the true experience of the women portrayed. And if you begin to imagine that madame Annie Ryan has a hidden heart of gold, the final scenes will tell you all you need to know! Tickets from The Square & Compass or ring 01929 439229. Bar available! Advance booking recommended. (Jon Sanders, UK/Canada 1998, 108 mins) Tuesday 14th October 7.15pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - Donations Please A HIJACKING (Kapringen) - A Charity Event 15 Aw The crew of a Danish cargo ship is hijacked by Somali pirates who proceed to engage in escalating negotiations with authorities in Copenhagen. Released before the acclaimed Captain Phillips, this is a tense and sombre, film. Fans of Scandi Noir TV will recognise Soren Malling in the lead role. (Tobias Lindholm, Denmark 2012, 103 mins) 8.00pm - Lighthouse, Poole - Adult £8.00, Child/Student £5.50, Senior £6.50 FRUITVALE STATION 15 Aw With its gritty slice of life feel and depiction of the minutiae, Fruitvale Station almost feels like a documentary. By concentrating on a myriad of little things to create a rich characterisation of its central character, Oscar Grant III (Michael B. Jordan) who was tragically and senselessly killed by police on New Year’s Eve, 2008, Ryan Coogler’s directing debut provides a rich and intimate insight. Real world violence, especially when law enforcement and racial politics are involved, is all too easily sensationalised when adapted into a feature film, but Coogler counteracts that expectation, by treating the incident as just that, an incident in the greater context of an ordinary day. With introduction. (Ryan Coogler, USA 2013, 85 mins) 7.30pm - Durlston Castle, Swanage - £7.00 to include Parking IL POSTINO U On Introduced by David Griffiths; Sponsored by La Trattoria Swanage The famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda is exiled to a small island, and the need quickly arises for an extra postman to handle his large correspondence. The poor man given the job befriends the poet, and learns from him the language he needs to woo a local beauty. Comedy, drama, and romance...perfect! Tickets from Durlston Castle and Swanage TIC. (Michael Radford, Italy 1994, 108 mins) (subtitles) David Griffiths is a translator/interpreter based in Spain since 1980 who has worked in the San Sebastian Film Festival since 1996 and the 'Punto de Vista' Documentary Film Festival (Pamplona) since it started in 2005. 12 13 Purbeck Film Festival 2014 6.30pm Supper, 7.30pm Film - The Black Swan Inn, Swanage - £11.00 to include Supper, £6.00 Film only THE ITALIAN JOB U GGn A wonderful action comedy about a plan to steal a gold shipment from the streets of Turin by creating a traffic jam. Numbers limited - advance booking strongly recommended. (Peter Collinson, UK 1969, 99mins) See Thursday 16th for the 2003 re-make screening. Wednesday 15th October 7.15pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50 CASTLES IN THE SKY cert tbc The dramatised story of Robert Watson Watt, the pioneer of Radar, and his efforts to develop the system in the mid 1930s, prior to the outbreak of war. Starring Eddie Izzard, this is a story with great local resonance...Worth Matravers anyone?! (Gillies Mackinnon, UK 2014, mins (tbc)) 8.00pm - Lighthouse, Poole - Adult £8.00, Child/Student £5.50, Senior £6.50 MIRACOLO A MILANO Miracle in Milan U Aw A kindly old woman finds a baby in her cabbage patch and decides to raise him as her own son. When she dies though, the little boy, whom she has named Totò, is sent to an orphanage. Upon leaving the orphanage at the age of 18, Totò fatefully arrives at a shantytown on the outskirts of Milan. Here, the young man quickly sets to work with a rather miraculous spring in his step. We watch intently, entranced at once by his innate compassion and instinctive generosity. And soon enough there is indeed a fine little town for the poorest of society. This idyllic new life is soon shattered however by the discovery of oil, with the spectacularly wealthy Mr Mobbi wanting his land back, and the pitiful squatters out of his sight at once. It would take a miracle for him to change his mind. With introduction. (Vittorio De Sica, Italy 1951, 100 mins) (in Italian and English) 7.30pm - The Blandford School - £6.00 in Association with Blandford Forum Film Society SAVING MR BANKS PG On Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks star in this over-looked gem of a film about the making of the Disney film Mary Poppins. Well worth watching the next film for another view of the Outback. (John Curran, Australia 2013, 112 mins) 8.30pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50 WAKE IN FRIGHT - Outback Evening 18 Aw Q & A with Director of Photography Brian West No mere curiosity from 1970, Wake In Fright is a riveting film with exceptional relevance today in its cultural truth and its observation of not just outback Australian society (if you can call it that) - but in human nature. Through the eyes of its ultra handsome British protagonist played by Gary Bond, we are trapped in a wild, vulgar, upside-down world in the outback where beer flows like water, money is tossed and lost gambling, women show their animalistic urges and men bond in a cloud of dust while hunting. (Ted Kotcheff, Australia 1971, 114 mins) 5.15pm - Lighthouse, Poole - Adult £8.00, Child/Student £5.50, Senior £6.50 8½ 15 Ow Aw The movie is the portrait of a man desperately trying to weld together the carnal and spiritual sides of his nature; the mistress and the wife, the artistic and the commercial. From time to time a muse appears to him: a seductive, calm, smiling dream woman (Claudia Cardinale). She offers him the tantalising possibility that all will be forgiven, and all will be well. But she is elusive and ethereal, and meanwhile the producer is growing desperate. This wonderful and famous film reminds us that the movies really can shake us up, if they want to. With introduction. (Federico Fellini, Italy 1963, 138 mins) (subtitles) 15 Purbeck Film Festival 2014 8.00pm - Lighthouse, Poole - Adult £8.00, Child/Student £5.50, Senior £6.50 LES FEMMES du 6ème ETAGE The Women on the 6th Floor 12A The distance between the bourgeoisie and the working class has never been so delightfully measured as in this delicious upstairs downstairs comedy, when a Spanish maid becomes the catalyst for change. Writer director Philippe Le Guay contrasts only too well the chilly mood that exists in the fine apartment of the stockbroker and his icy wife with the warmth and joie de vivre that exudes from the Spanish contingent of domestics who live on the 6th floor. Vive la difference! With introduction. (Phillippe Le Guay, France 2010, 102 mins) (subtitles) 3.00pm - Durlston Castle, Swanage - £5.00, £3.00 students or free if you have a ticket for the The Valley of Gwangi ANIMATION from MÉLIÈRES to HARRYHAUSEN and BEYOND Ray Harryhausen is no longer with us but we have his friend and right hand man of several decades to put him in context and demonstrate the impact this giant of cinema had and is still having. Harryhausen's legacy is out there in the world and on our screens regularly but the artefacts from production also exist and can be visited. Tony will give us the inside story from his vantage point. Later in the evening we show Tony's suggested film The Valley of Gwangi, very appropriate for Durlston Castle, the HQ of the UNESCO Jurassic Coast. Be afraid! When placid, hard-working snowplough driver Nils Dickman's only son is found dead from an apparent drug overdose, he decides to take revenge against those responsible...a ruthless drug gang. He's outnumbered for sure, but Nils knows the terrain...A hugely enjoyable, gruesome, ingenious, brilliantly-cast, pitch-black comedy set against the hugely cinematic white landscape of a rural Norwegian winter. Like Death Wish set in Fargo, but funnier...and bloodier! (Hans Petter Moland, Norway 2014, 116 mins) (subtitles) 7.30pm - Bloxworth Village Hall - £6.00 CAPTAIN PHILLIPS 12A On Based on the true story of the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years in 2009. Tom Hanks, the captain of the title, gives a fine performance as he faces a life and death struggle against the Somali pirates in the battle to save both his ship and crew. The relationship between him and the pirates' captain, Muse (played by Barkhad Abdi) is at the centre of this thriller both in the struggle to assert control and in the clash of cultures, a theme that is expanded to question the effect of globalisation on both their lives. Heart-stoppingly tense as it reaches its dramatic conclusion - your pulse will be racing! Lee Van Cleef was never better than here as Jonathan Corbett, a legendary gunfighter and would be congressman who is hired to track down a child murderer. His pursuit of this man played with panache by Thomas Milian is plagued by doubts that maybe this is not the man he should be chasing; these doubts are well realised and lead to the final big gundown that gives the film its title. A charming warm and sentimental story; if you enjoyed the director's film The Well Digger's Daughter we showed previously you will LOVE this; don't miss the sequel Fanny on the closing night! It's strange and weird and yet it makes sense in its own little world. With endless invention and a huge amount of wit, it's a wonderful film that is as entertaining for kids as it for adults. Indeed grown-ups will appreciate that there's more going on here than just silly fun, as the King's castle works as sharp critique of a bureaucratic class system. Although the film is from a Hawaiian perspective, it really is a global film - the Hawaiian islands are a microcosm of our planet and they are in a unique position to tell us where we are going wrong environmentally and how we can adjust man's behaviour to put things right. The film follows the effort of scientists, environmentalists and surfers to clean their ocean as it becomes increasingly clear that the world's seas and the magnificent marine life that inhabit the waters are in peril. For those who have come to expect all motion pictures to develop in safe, expected ways, Swept Away offers an opportunity to experience something different. The movie is not realistic, but the strong element of fantasy doesn’t limit its ability to captivate and intrigue. That's because the characters and their relationship rise to the top and arrest our attention from beginning to end. This gem of a film surprised audiences when it came out, and has lost none of its power or relevance since then. With introduction. You can also bring your own wine/popcorn to add to the enjoyment. 7.45pm - Pavilion Dance, Bournemouth - £6.00 (two for £10) ALLEGRO NON TROPPO PG Introduced by Dr Paul Ward AUB A high-spirited, energetically animated feature that expands on FANTASIA’s idea of using classical music as a basis for cartoon movement. Director Bozzetto’s style is frantic in pace and occasionally violent, but his use of colour and line is dazzling. Each segment of the film is rich and funny, but the evolution of life from the last few drops of a Coca-Cola bottle set to Ravel's 'Bolero' is a true showstopper. Tickets from 01202 203630 or www.pdsw.org.uk or Discover Purbeck. (Bruno Bozzetto, Italy 1976, 75 mins) Saturday 25th October 6.00pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50 PINOCCHIO U Ow Patron's Choice - John Hooker One of the great classic Disney cartoon features, from the original Italian fable by Carlo Collodi, about an old carpenter who fashions a marionette, and wishes he was a real child. His wish is granted by a fairy, and so his adventures begin. That's what happens when you wish upon a star. (Norman Ferguson and others, US 1940, 88 mins) 8.30pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50 Closing Gala - FANNY PG The Marseilles trilogy of Marcel Pagnol has inspired several film versions, notably the 1931 movie directed by Marc Allegret followed a year later by the sequel Fanny. The films tell the story of the life and loves of the eponymous hero and heroine, their families and friends. A charming warm and sentimental story.
