ACE Students...
The Academic Challenge and Excellence Program (ACE) is aimed at providing a
stimulating and supportive learning environment, using the school’s latest
information and communication technologies, for high performing students to
demonstrate and achieve outcomes that are consistent with their academic ability.

Expectations
If you are accepted into the ACE program you must continually meet high standards
of academic achievement, behavior and effort. There are regular student review
points across Year 8 and Year 9 where every ACE student’s continued participation
in the program is evaluated. If you are not meeting the expectations of the program
you may be asked to relinquish your position for higher performing students in
other, non-ACE, classes.

ACE ENGLISH
AIMS OF THE PROGRAM
1. To motivate students between Years 4 – 9 to challenge themselves to achieve excellence
through language use
2. To use spoken and written language mediums to demonstrate personal capacity, resilience
and striving for excellence
PROGRAM DESIGN
Students will be engaged in exploring the power that language holds to inform, create and
persuade in the pursuit of personal empowerment. 2014’s theme “IMPACT” aims to motivate
students to explore the many and variant factors that encourage young people to make a
difference in their own and other’s lives.
PARTICIPATION
Whilst the program is in the planning stage at this point, the intention of ACE English is to provide
high achieving students with opportunities to engage with language to inform, create and persuade
in written and spoken forms. This may take the form of:

Regular, facilitated workshops
Access to ‘Writers in Residence’ and other similar resources to support writing outcomes
Writer’s camps at Bucca or Riverside Retreat
Creative access cultural capital (exotic knowledge) that contributes to quality writing and
speaking outcomes through research based projects at Kepnock SHS
5. Use of digital platforms to share work and interact with staff, including Students Space on
the Learning Place where students log into a workshop at their school
6. Access to writing and speaking competitions to exhibit outcomes
OUTCOMES
Students involved in ACE English will produce an entry into the ACE English Writer’s Competition
responding to the theme ‘IMPACT’. Students’ work enhances the capacity for success in English
in their own schools and may be used to guide decision making about placement in ACE English
in 2015.

ACE English Program
Each year, Kepnock SHS’s ACE English program delivers a program which relies upon differentiated pedagogy to meet
the specific learning needs of aspirational students. Year 7 provides a foundation to this differentiated practice while
year 8 and 9 contains explicit extension opportunities in both the daily curriculum and in assessment. These tasks are
designed to challenge students via extension work, not extra work. The assessment will look different to the rest of
the school at various junctures in the course. As time progresses this extension work may be included in the Year 7
program (tasks are subject to change via the internal quality review process).

ACE MATHEMATICS
The Kepnock ACE Mathematics (ACE-M) program is a unique targeted program that develops
the problem solving skills and knowledge of students identified as having potential in Mathematics.
Starting in the Coral Coast Cluster Primary schools, selected students from as young as Year 3
participate in a series of special ‘Challenge Mathematics’ lessons facilitated by staff from Kepnock
State High School. These students are encouraged to apply for a place in the Kepnock ACE
program in Year 8 where they continue to be engaged in an accelerated Mathematics program,
exploring open-ended investigations to develop higher-order thinking processes.
By remaining with the program through their high school years, ACE-M students are able to
complete their Senior Mathematics B in Year 11 and accelerate their pathway into University. The
ACE-M program contributes to a seamless transition from Primary to Junior Secondary School. It
creates an exciting focus for students to nurture and develop confidence in their mathematical
ability, be intellectually challenged and achieve success in our large regional State Secondary
school.

AIMS OF THE PROGRAM
1. To provide an enriching dimension to Kepnock State High School’s Instrumental Music Program
2. To motivate Cultural State School students to remain in the State School system
3. To increase student artistry, expression and aesthetic sensitivity through all five Arts disciplines
PROGRAM DESIGN
Students are invited to apply for one of 25 positions available in 2015. Students will study all FIVE Arts
disciplines throughout their ACE Music Program in order to enrich their learning. This includes five 8 week
rotations through the areas of Dance, Drama, Music, Media Arts and Visual Art.
Successful applicants will show a commitment to our Instrumental Music Program through rehearsal,
attendance, participation in workshops and compulsory public performances. Due to the importance of
music education, Instrumental Music in year 8 will occur during students’ Arts rotations. Students will
continue to experience a vibrant Instrumental Music Program without affecting their attendance in the
regular academic program.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Students who demonstrate skill and passion in the area of music and already play a musical instrument are
invited to apply for ACE Music. Students must be highly creative and motivated to pursue further study in
the Arts. Instruments can include: violin, viola, cello, double bass, bass guitar, flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet,
saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba or percussion.
PARTICIPATION
The intention of ACE Music is to provide high achieving students with opportunities to engage with all five
Arts disciplines to create, perform and present in various forms. This may take the form of:

Weekly group tuition and daily personal practice for their chosen instrument/s
Ensemble experience to develop ensemble performance skills
Solo and Chamber performances to develop confidence and independence whilst performing
Access to musical competitions, transition day performances and workshops as well as
performances at school functions such as Arts Night and Presentation Night.
5. Exposure to the latest technology available to compose, arrange and notate music using
GarageBand, Noteflight and the Arts Department’s iMac suite
6. A rounded Arts education where all five Arts disciplines are equally valued and experienced
OUTCOMES
International and Australian research shows music education can make significant differences to students’
abilities. Students who are active music-makers are more likely to have improved maths and language
performance, better reasoning capacity and problem-solving skills, better time management and self
discipline, improved memory and concentration, better social and team skills.
The ACE Music Program extends these benefits, providing students with a performance focus within their
music studies to strengthen and further increase their skills on their chosen instrument, and broadening

ACE SCIENCE
Aims of the Program:
1. Expose students to deeper scientific knowledge and concepts that allow them to truly
understand the world around them.
2. To develop important inquiry-based learning skills essential for life-long learning
3. To inspire aspirational students to think outside of the box through the teaching of embedded
contextual Science.
Program Design:
Students will be immersed in a contextual Science program. The ACE Science program strives to
deliver engaging curriculum linked closely to our local region. As Caine & Caine (1991, 1994,
1997a, b) state, “Classrooms free of threat, students engaged in immersive learning experiences,
and curriculum that connects to the community and the students' lives are all aspects of braincompatible teaching”.
Participation:
Kepnock’s involvement with the Scientists in Schools partnership, allows our high achieving
students to be partnered with current, industry renowned, scientists, David Aslin and Tim Fischer.
This relationship provides our students with access to cutting edge research and technological
advances, as well as valuable insight into the “real world” applications of Science in society.
Although ACE Science is in its preliminary phase, increased real world connectivity and freedom
for students to link, connect and integrate ideas invokes development of key life-long learning
skills of critical thinking, decision-making, and reflection.
Outcomes:
ACE Science students will develop deep scientific knowledge through contextual application of the
Australian Science Curriculum and incorporation of innovative technologies in our Science Centre
for the 21st Century. Our high achieving students will have an enhanced understanding of the role
science plays in society and the part they play as they are encouraged to take responsibility for
their learning.
Cluster Connection:
Kepnock’s ACE-S program is enhanced through the support of teacher colleagues in the Coral
Coast Cluster. By strengthening ties with each feeder Primary school we are better able to track
student progress and map curriculum relevant activities prior to students’ enrolment at our school.
Kepnock’s ACE-S program supports the training of nominated staff members to become Science
Facilitators, assisting to develop knowledge in areas such as Science program development,
resource management and professional development in scientific content areas. We have a
fantastic team of Science staff with expertise across all fields and are happy to share this
knowledge.

PE@K is a
school wide approach to developing sustained and successful teacher and student relationships.
It aims to:

The PE@K program is embedded throughout our Student Diary and it is based around the Learning
Curve Planner – Living, Learning and Thinking Program. This program is a student wellbeing program

Students undertake a weekly activity, based on the ‘Value for Life’. This activity introduces students to
