Maize silage for immediate use:

stopping the clamp heating.
Treated silage can be fed straight away.
Coolsile is safe and easy to use and is available in 25L, 200L
and 1000 Litre IBCs.
Coolsile costs from just 91p per tonne treated.
Maize silage for use later in autumn
and BUFFER FEEDING in summer:
Silo Action Maize applies one million bacteria per gram of
maize which produce a range of acids and enhance the
stability of the clamp, keeping it cool and stable, increasing
both feed value and animal performance. Treated silage is
also ideal for summer buffer feeding. Safe and easy to use,
available in conventional 2 ltrs/tonne or ULV formulation.
One pack treats 100 tonnes and costs £110

MOLASSES
One of the best value for money feeds
for the coming winter
The benefits of feeding
molasses
1. Alternative source of energy
Even with this year’s lower feed prices if you
are looking for a cost effective source of energy
molasses is excellent value for money. Also
many dairy rations are deficient in sugar (you
should be aiming for 6-8% sugar in your diet).
And molasses is the most cost effective source
of sugars available.
2. Improved palatability
Many silages this year were made in less than
ideal conditions. Molasses is an ideal way of
increasing the intake of these silages. Even with
well made silages the addition of molasses will
significantly improve dry matter intake.
3. Highly cost effective source
of protein
Did you know that you can currently buy a
molasses product with 27-28% crude protein (dm)
for around £10/T above the price of straight cane
molasses? With the current high price of protein
feeds such as soya, rapemeal and distillers this
means you can get all the benefits of feeding
molasses and effectively boost the protein level of
your ration for free. The protein in molasses blends
is also highly rumen degradable making it the
ideal complement to maize silage or wholecrop.
4. Reduced wastage
Molasses will reduce the dustiness of the ration
whilst improving the mixing and discourage the
cows from sorting out favoured ingredients. This
will lead to significantly reduced feed wastage.
5. Extend forage stocks
Molasses can be added to straw to boost
forage stocks where they are in short supply.
It is best to do this from the start of the winter
rather than making a sudden change towards
the end of the winter when stocks run out.
Choose a molasses product with added protein
to counteract the low protein in straw.
Call your Area Manager today to discuss
your best options and to discuss winter
contract prices.

EARLY SILAGE ANALYSIS IS HIGHLIGHTING VARIABLE QUALITY
Favourable growing conditions have meant that
many farmers have produced bumper crops of
grass silage. However, early analysis results are
not as promising as some may expect.
Dr Michael Marsden, Trident Feeds technical
manager explains that he has seen numerous
silage analysis results indicating that this year’s
first cut of silage is worse than that produced in
the poor season of 2012.
“Many farmers will be experiencing a
combination of low dry matter, low ME and
reduced intake factors.” warns Dr Marsden.
Producers may be questioning why their silages
are performing in this way. He explains that
the mild winter allowed grass to continue to
grow, albeit slowly, and therefore it had the
opportunity to become more lignified.
“Combining this with variable weather at
harvest has meant that typically the silage has
a low NDF fraction, representing half of the
dry matter. This has resulted in forage that is
probably more mature and less digestible,”
explains Dr Marsden.
As intake is linked to digestibility, producers may
need to feed more concentrates than originally
expected to provide rumen and total energy.
However, Dr Marsden reminds farmers that this
needs to be carefully managed.
“If too much energy is available too quickly, such
as from cereals, an excess amount of lactic acid
is produced in the rumen. It’s therefore important
that, despite low cereal prices, farmers resist the
temptation to feed more grain in order to reduce
the risks of rumen acidosis, a reduction in feed
efficiency and milk performance.
“To provide the most suitable
energy source the feed is
required to ferment slowly
in the rumen. The significant
quantity of digestible fibre as
energy in sugar beet feed makes it one of the
best options available for all dairy, beef cattle
and sheep,” he explains.
However, on a more promising note, Dr Marsden
acknowledges that analysis of second cut silages
are looking stronger with higher dry matter, ME
and intake factors. “Perhaps as they are from
re-growths,” he states.
“It is clear that feeding sugar beet in a TMR will
help balance and compensate for any variations
in forage quality,” concludes Dr Marsden.

ARABLE
Fertiliser update
Every year the fertiliser market is different, both as a buyer and a seller, but it is always related to demand and supply.
The traditional ‘early purchase market’ this year was slower than usual, partly because of uncertainty of yields, CAP reform, and falling ex farm cereal and
rape prices.
Our ‘advice’ as always has been to split ones purchases and ‘average’ out costs as a form of risk management. Many customers followed this others
continue to sit on the fence.
Production by our only domestic manufacturer GrowHow has to continue 24/7 so for the first time in a long while export
markets have been supplied, demonstrating that there is a shortage of Nitrogen product across Europe.
The consequence of not having an early delivery market will be that more product will have to be delivered in a shorter
period of time, and it becomes very difficult to satisfy everyone on time.
There is already a warning from the RHA (Road haulage Association) of a shortage of lorry drivers, as a result of recent
regulation changes, and we know that ADR qualified drivers
(who deliver Nitrogen Products) are a finite resource.
After a period in ‘limbo’ the Nitrogen market has started to
firm again, mainly due to a shortage of ‘Nitrate’ production
in Europe. The possible impact of the situation in the
Ukraine could affect supplies of gas and fertiliser to the
European markets from Russia and with the continuing
uncertainty in the Middle East impacting on urea
supplies, prices are starting to rise again.
Phosphate and Potash are also showing signs of a
resumption in demand and are beginning to firm.
We would urge you to review your requirements and
discuss the many options we have in both products
and finance options with your area manager and at
least take sufficient product on to farm as soon as
possible for your first dressings.

Housing Wormers
All young cattle need to be wormed at housing time, to help them make best use of winter feed as
well as avoiding winter scours. Levels of liver fluke infestation are very high in many areas. So, if you
are in an area prone to fluke infestation it is advisable to use a wormer and a flukicide or one of the allin-one products.
