SINGAPORE COUNCIL OF
CHRISTIAN CHURCHES
(SCCC)
REFORMATION TOUR 2014
The Executive Committee of the
Singapore Council of Christian
Churches (SCCC) decided in March
2013 to have a Reformation Tour to
Europe, with Rev (Dr) Quek Swee
Hwa (advisor of the SCCC) to lead
the tour. Praise the Lord for the commencement of the tour on 28 September 2014 to Germany, France,
Switzerland and Scotland, a 14-day
tour which ended on 12 October
2014. This is an historic event for
the SCCC. I am thankful to the Lord
for giving us 33 persons from five
different denominations (Baptist,
Castle Church,
Wittenberg, Germany.
The 95 theses door
Brethren, Methodist, Anglican and
Bible-Presbyterian).
When the reformation comes alive
This is church history coming
alive as we toured the reformation
sites in Europe. In Germany and
France, it was Martin Luther and
Philip Melanchthon. Visiting sites
like the Castle Church where Luther
pinned his 95 theses and the tombs
of these two men, as well as Wartburg Castle where Luther was sheltered and where he translated the
Bible into German, was a blessing to
me. I had always wanted to travel to
these places to see how the Lord
used these men for His purpose and
glory.
Luther especially, holds a special
place in my life as I saw the zeal and
courage of this man who stood for
the Word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ (Rev. 1: 9). I
think more importantly, there were
many believers, like Philip Melanchthon who together with Luther were
not afraid to stand up for Christ at
such a time. When it comes to Biblical truth and the need to stand steadfast, believers must rally together
with their leaders. Thank God for
Martin Luther and those who stood
with him.
In Constance, Germany, we saw
the site where John Hus was burnt.
In Zurich, we visited the site of
Zwingli who started the Swiss Reformation. One of the highlights of
the tour was visiting Geneva’s International Monument of the Reformation, known as the Reformation
Wall where many of the prominent
individuals, events and documents of
the Protestant Reformation were
highlighted. It was a
grand sight to behold
the four, 5m - tall statues of Calvinism’s
main proponents: From
left - William Farel,
John Calvin, Theodore
Beze and John Knox.
Our last destination was Scotland. I was touched by the Scottish
Reformed Church and their link to
the Covenanters. These people were
martyred in the post-reformation period. Highlights of the Scottish tour
was John Knox, the Scottish reformer. He pastored St Giles Cathedral for 13 years. Presbyterianism
springs forth from both John Knox
and John Calvin.
Lessons from the reformation tour
While we must be careful not to
honour anyone for their achievements in these events, we must know
that they were only God’s instruments in bringing the church back to
biblical Christianity. We remember
their service to Jesus. We saw their
love for the Bible. We saw how they
stood firm to the end for the Lord
and His cause. They never had it
easy in bringing forth change. One
significant thing I observed in the
lives of these people was that The
Lord was their strength and help.
They knew what they did was biblical; otherwise they would never risk
their lives and die for this cause.
“Be thou faithful unto death, and I
will give thee a crown of life” (Rev.
2: 10).

MEETING UP WITH
REV DAVID KAROON
During the reformation tour
in Scotland, Rev Mani and I met
with Rev David Karoon and his
wife Shirley on 10 Oct. Pastor
David is the son of the late Rev
Burt Subramaniam. Some of you
may remember the late Pastor
Burt who had preached in Grace
church. His son is now a minister
at the Stornoway Reformed Presbyterian Church in Scotland. He
is also a Seminary Professor with
the Scottish Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He
teaches New Testament Theology
and New Testament History.
Praise the Lord God for this
meeting.
It has been a long time since I
last saw Pastor David Karoon. I
am so happy for him. He has followed in the footsteps of his father to serve Jesus. He has done
well to be accepted by the Scots
in the Scottish church and the
seminary. In fact, he is the first
Asian and Singaporean to be in
this place of service in Scotland.
Praise the Lord!
It is always a joy to see a
young man like him serving the
Lord. He was a Law graduate but
gladly gave up his career to be a
Pastor. Not many of us would do
this today. It was a fitting climax
to the reformation tour.

How did Heinz 57 sauce get such a strange name?
God elevated [Jesus] to the place of highest honor and gave
him the name above all other names, that at the name of
Jesus every knee should bow. Philippians 2:9-10
Most people think there must be fifty-seven ingredients in this bottle of flavourful sauce. They would be surprised to find out that the number fifty-seven is really on the
label because of some shoes! Henry John Heinz owned a food
company, and one day while riding on a train, he saw a sign
through the window that claimed a store had twenty-one
styles of shoes. Mr Heinz thought that having a number in the
advertising was catchy, and he decided the name for his tasty
sauce needed a number too. Just because he liked the sound
of it and thought people would remember it, Mr Heinz picked
the number fifty-seven. It must have been a good choice—no
one calls his sauce Heinz 21 by mistake.
Special names can be important in advertising because they
remind you what’s unique about a certain product. But the
most special name on earth is Jesus Christ. He died on the
cross so you could go to heaven one day. The Bible tells us,
“God elevated [Jesus] to the place of highest honor and gave
him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow” (Philippians 2:9-10). Always remember the name of Jesus; it’s more important than any other
name there is.
