PROJECT SUMMARY
ARTS Obispo, the Ann Ream Public Art Legacy Project Committee, and the Art in Public Places
Coalition, are currently seeking artists with the qualifications for an exterior work of art in San Luis
Obispo, CA. This project is a tribute to Ann Ream, the founding chair of Art in Public Places
Committee, and a dedicated advocate for the Arts in our community. This is a unique opportunity for
selected artists to work together collaboratively. Artists or artist teams (2 or 3 members) with
experience and/or passion for public art should submit their qualifications. Artists without previous
collaborative experience can apply.
 Up to 32 artists or artist teams will be chosen, based on their qualifications, to submit proposals.
 These selected qualified artists need to attend a mandatory project information meeting, after
which specific design proposals are to be submitted.
 A total of 16 artists or artist teams (finalists) will be selected for this project based on their
proposals.
 The finalists will collaborate with the Project Committee on the construction of a large, multimaterial base representing the different disciplines of the Arts.
 The collaborative component of this project requires a willingness to work within
predetermined outlines, color schemes, and to meet as a group to refine composition and
arrangements.

A second element, two slender intertwined forms made from non-ferrous metals, will rise from
the base.
ANN’S LEGACY
Ann was many things to many people including: a wife, mother, sister, friend, dancer, poet, beauty
queen, fashionista, farmer, and teacher. In our community she was both a pioneer and a fierce
advocate for the arts. She was Past President of ARTS Obispo, SLO County’s Arts Council and a
longtime Chair of the Art in Public Places Committee. Without Ann's drive there might not be Public
Art in San Luis Obispo County today. She was responsible for building the foundation of the Public Art
½% Program in the City of San Luis Obispo and creating the Public Art Policy. She was an unceasing
creative resource for all cities in SLO County, passionately reminding local builders of their obligation
to include Public Art in their project plans. She believed artists must be financially compensated for
their contributions of skill and expertise. Her encouragement and education of local artists and
citizens about the responsibilities and rewards of involvement with the Arts changed the face, hearts
and minds of our community. The Ann Reams Legacy Project was designed with Ann as our
inspiration.
BUDGET
The budget for the entire piece of public art is $200,000.
Each finalist will receive a stipend for their efforts. Finalists; the largest panels will pay somewhere
around $2,500 to $3,000 (will include cost for materials), smaller panels will be compensated in a like
fashion, proportional to that panel's area. Additional information/details will be given at the
December 1 meeting.
RFQ DEADLINE
November 17, 2014: Applications complete with images must be submitted.
November 24, 2014: A jury will select the qualified artists for which they would like to see proposals.
November 25, 2014: Qualified artists will be notified before Thanksgiving, and given information on the
December 1 meeting.
December 1, 2014: Meeting for selected qualified artists, 5pm (location TBD).
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project consists of two interacting elliptical, arcing vertical non-ferrous metals sculptures standing
approximately 18’ tall on a 20’ circular mound with a two foot rise. Art viewers will be able to walk
around the mound reading poetry, over the mound and under the sculptures interacting with the
shapes, textures, designs and colors. The mound will be divided into an overall design using stainless
steel ribbons; each section of the design will be available for the artists’ interpretation of the Arts
(visual, theater, dance, music, literary). Stiff, accurate templates of each section will be generated.
The material pallet includes (but is not limited to): cast glass or ceramic, mosaics, metals with durable
finishes, or synthetic molding or casting compounds the have proven track records. Selected
qualified artists will present proposals for the sections based on the art disciplines. Up to 16 proposed
designs will be accepted. The final selected artists will be responsible for a specific section and will
collaborate with the group to complete the piece.

A more detailed description of the requirements for proposals will be distributed to the selected
qualified artists on December 1, 5pm (location TBD).
REQUIREMENTS / APPLICATION
Applicants must complete the online application (includes 3 images of artwork) by November 17,
2014.
SELECTION PROCESS
The Ann Ream Public Art Legacy Project Committee will review and jury all qualified applicants. Artists
will be notified before Thanksgiving.
Up to 32 selected qualified artists must attend a meeting on December 1, 2014 5pm (location TBD).
BASIC PROJECT TIMELINE
November 24, 2014: Up to 32 qualified artists will be selected.
November 25, 2014: Qualified artists will be notified and given information on the December 1
meeting.
December 1, 2014: Selected artists must attend a meeting at 5pm (location TBD). A maquette of the
piece will be on display to study at this meeting. Additional information about proposal requirements
will be given.
February 17, 2015: Artists will submit proposals for their chosen/designated slice of the base.
February 19, 2015: Committee will jury proposals. Up to 16 finalists will be selected.
March 2, 2015: Fundraising Campaign begins.
April, 2015: Fundraising deadline.
May/June, 2015: ARTS Obispo and the Ann Ream Public Art Legacy Project Committee will work to
secure matching funds from the City of San Luis Obispo.
Summer-Winter, 2015: At this time we cannot say when installation will be as so much of public art
projects are determined on funding, permits, city/county schedules, etc. We will be updating this
rough timeline as often and promptly as possible.
