2014 Points of Pride
The District School Board of Pasco County was ranked 35th
on the list of 100 Healthiest Workplaces in America. The
School Board also earned a Silver medal as one of Florida’s
Healthiest School Districts from the Florida Coordinated
School Health Partnership, Florida Action for Healthy Kids,
and Florida Association of District School Superintendents.
The following schools won HealthierUS School Challenge
Awards:

Celena Heesch, a senior at J.W. Mitchell High School, is a
National Achievement Scholarship semifinalist.

Emily Suvannasankha, Land O’ Lakes High School
Land O’ Lakes High School was named one of “America’s
Top High Schools 2014” by The Daily Beast in its annual
rankings. LOLHS received a Silver Medal in the U.S. News &
World Report’s Best High Schools ranking. The school also was
listed as one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools
by The Washington Post in its annual national school rankings.
Six Pasco County teams competed in the World Odyssey of
the Mind finals. The district teams, their ranking, and their
problem topic are:

The Land O’ Lakes High School Gray soccer team will
represent Team USA at the 2015 Special Olympics World
Summer Games.
Florida Council for the Social Studies Outstanding Social
Studies Teachers of the Year:

Middle- Stephanie Anderson – Thomas E. Weightman Middle School
High- Scotty Carroll – Zephyrhills High School
Andy Dunn and the Communications and Government
Relations Department won a Sunshine Medallion award
from the Sunshine State School Public Relations
Association for the video about Sunlake High School,
“Changing the Culture of a School with Twitter.”
Freda A. Abercrombie, a Weightman Middle School teacher,
received the University of South Florida Alumni Spirit of
Partnership Award.
Marchman Technical Education Center (MTEC) earned four
gold, one silver, and four bronze medals in the state
SkillsUSA competition. MTEC students and their honors are:

David Bowden - Cosmetology - Post Secondary Bronze

Watergrass Elementary School music teacher Karen Reinhold
was awarded the 2013-14 Music Education Service Award
by the Florida Music Educators’ Association in recognition
of her 30 years of service in the field.
All four Pasco County Schools students who entered the
Department of Agriculture’s Student Chef Cook-Off won
first or second place in the region finals. Land O’ Lakes High
School sophomore Kyler Roy won first place in the high
school contest and was named the West/Central Region
student chef ambassador. Results:

Capital Project Budget savings of $8.3M by aggressively
using the school district’s sales tax exempt status.
Food & Nutrition Services reduced water consumption by
90 percent by replacing steamers.
Saved $475,768 in energy costs by implementing
centralized HVAC controls and monitoring team.
HR&EQ reduced the number of teachers considered out
of field or not highly qualified from 130 to 10 in one year.
