WORSHIP
Sunday, October 26, 2014
Eternal god, you are the power behind
all things: behind the energy of the storm,
behind the heat of a million stars. Eternal
God, you are the power behind all minds:
behind the ability to think and reason, behind
all understanding of the truth. Eternal God,
you are the power behind the cross of Christ:
behind the weakness, the torture and the
death, behind unconquerable love. Eternal
God, we worship and adore you. Amen.

*Prayer of Confession (together)
Eternal God, our judge and redeemer, we confess that we have
tried to hide from you, for we have done wrong. We have lived for
ourselves, and apart from you. We have turned from our neighbors,
and refused to bear the burdens of others. We have ignored the pain
of the world, and passed by the hungry, the poor, and the oppressed.
In your great mercy forgive our sins and free us from selfishness,
that we may choose your will and obey your commandments; through
Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
*Declaration of Pardon
Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel.
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
*Congregational response (together)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
*Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed (together)
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day
he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on
the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come
to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the
resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

“Come Dwell in Solomon’s Walls”
Z. Randall Stroope
Chancel Choir
When the final timber lay ‘gainst the measured stones,
With the door posts in their place overlaid with gold.
The Lord appeared to Solomon, blessing all the house,
The temple of the ark of God, pure and whole.
Come dwell in Solomon’s walls, come dwell in the house of the Lord.
Where the humble bow down, seeking wisdom and strength,
For the Lord dwells within and heals their land.
Come dwell in Solomon’s walls, come dwell in the house of the Lord.
Where wisdom and righteousness, justice and holiness,
Join at the feet of God.
When the people of this house kneel and humbly pray,
When they turn from dark to light and Your will obey,
O Lord of Heaven and Lord of earth, Show favor on this house,
And heal, restore, forgive, and bless, Lord we pray. Come dwell!
offertory
pastoral prayer and the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is
the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;

Chancel Choir, Congregation (please stand as directed)
Chancel Choir:
Christ, the Lord, is our sure foundation, Christ, the head and cornerstone.
Chosen by our God most precious, binding all the church as one;
Jesus Christ, the one rejected, by faithless cast aside,
Living Stone, ordained to live eternally on high.
Chosen race, O holy nation, called from darkness into light.
Sing of grace and mercy and proclaim God’s pow’r and might.
You are led by God’s great light.
Chancel Choir and Congregation:
Lead on, O King Eternal, the day of march has come.
Henceforth in fields of conquest your tents will be our home.
Through days of preparation your grace has made us strong;
And now, O King eternal, we lift our battle song.
Lead on, O King Eternal, till sin’s fierce war shall cease,
And holiness shall whisper the sweet Amen of peace.
For not with swords loud clashing, nor roll of stirring drums,
With deeds of love and mercy the heavenly kingdom comes.
Lead on, O King Eternal, we follow, not with fears,
For gladness breaks like morning where’er your face appears.
Your cross is lifted o’er us, we journey in its light.
The crown awaits the conquest, lead on, O God of might.

Agape Flights
Serving Christ by Serving His Missionaries
The most recent “Flightline” from Agape Flights reports:
“God’s transformational love is a matter of the heart,
from the inside out. At first glance, Agape’s most visible
transformation this summer might be the outside of the
hanger building. In an effort to care for the ministry home
that God has provided, the outside of Agape’s hanger
received a much-needed facelift. The leaky downspouts
were repaired, the rusty building was primed and painted,
the torn awnings replaced, the overgrown bushes and
trees trimmed and the parking lot sealed. The funds used
to complete the work were raised last March during the ‘Pie in the Sky’ pie auction,
and earmarked for the purpose of building repairs.” Among the eight visitors from
COP, several bid successfully and took home pies!
“The outside of the building has been transformed to more closely mirror the
excellence of God’s work, but where Christ’s transformational work truly matters
is at the heart, the ‘inside’ of the mission work, to ‘Serve Christ by Serving His
Missionaries’ in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.”
“God’s transformation is a continual process. Last year, Agape celebrated the
successful completion of the safety
“We are taking pains to do what
audit and adoption of values driven
governance principles. Agape met is right, not only in the eyes of
another of it ‘heart related’ strategic the Lord but also in the eyes of
goals just a few weeks ago when
we gained accreditation by the man.” - 2 Corinthians 8:21
Evangelical Council of Financial Accountability (ECFA). We have taken the ECFA
accreditation process seriously to demonstrate further our commitment to our core
values of Service, Integrity, Excellence, and Shared Purpose. These
values continue to remind and inspire the Agape staff and board
to stand accountable, reflect our mission, purpose and beliefs in
all that we do.” The Mission Partner Advocate for Agape Flights is

God’s Story
Your Story
October 26, 2014
For the week of October 26, 2104
Devotion: Use this resource at home to guide your household’s daily
devotions. You can do this alone, as a couple, as a family; in the morning,
during the day, or at night. Find a routine that works best for you.
Pray: Light a candle and open your devotion time with a prayer.
God of abundant blessing, you granted wisdom, wealth, and long life to
your servant, Solomon. Grant us wisdom, so that we may know your ways
and follow in your footsteps, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Reflect: Reflect on the key verses from Sunday’s reading.
“Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your
people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this
your great people?” It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.
1 Kings 3:9-10
Study: Study the reading and consider the background.
Solomon was the first son born to David and Bathsheba after they lost
their first son because of David’s sin. David had many other sons with
other women, and many of them wanted to become ruler after David.
But the prophet Nathan, and Solomon’s mother, Bathsheba, plotted to
ensure Solomon would be king. Bathsheba appealed to David in his final
days to appoint Solomon king, and David agreed. Solomon succeeded
David as king.
As king, Solomon became the primary instrument of carrying out God’s
plan for Israel. God asked what God could give to Solomon. Instead of
asking for gifts that would serve Solomon alone, Solomon asked for
wisdom so that he could rule God’s people wisely, and with justice.
Solomon’s request pleased God so much, God gave Solomon wisdom as
well as riches and long life. As long as Solomon followed God’s ways, he
would continue to receive God’s blessings.

Story
Your Story
- continued -
Read: Read the following daily readings to deepen your understanding of
Sunday’s text. After the reading, ask the follow-up questions.
Follow the story of Solomon. See how God uses even imperfect humans
to carry out God’s work in the world.
Sunday, 1 Kings 3:4-9, (10-15), 16-28, Solomon’s Wisdom
Monday, 1 Kings 6:1-22, Solomon Builds the Temple
Tuesday, 1 Kings 8:1-13, Dedication of the Temple
Wednesday, 1 Kings 8:54-61, Solomon Blesses the Assembly
Thursday, 1 Kings 10:1-13, Visit of the Queen of Sheba
Friday, 1 Kings 10:14-29, Visit of the Queen of Sheba
Saturday, 1 Kings 11:1-13, Solomon’s Errors
How did God bless others through Solomon? Where did Solomon
succeed? Where did he fail? How did his successes and failures shape
the kingdom?
Connect:
Connect in conversation with others in your household. Discuss the
following questions, or simply check in with “Highs” and “Lows.”



What was a high point of your day? What was a low point?
Where do you see justice carried out in your community?
Where do you see injustice? What might you do to further the
work of justice in your community?
What does it mean to you that God chooses, calls, and equips
imperfect people to do God’s work in the world? How can you
use your flaws and strengths to do God’s work?
Do:
By acting on what we learn, we make God’s word come alive. Do the
following activity this week.
Make a list of strengths you possess. If you do this activity with your
household, list the strengths of others and share them. Keep the list
visible this week so you can be reminded that you are God’s worker.
Bless:
Close your devotion with a blessing.
Wise and wonderful Lord, speak wisdom to our hearts in the reading of
your word. Amen.
