The value of winning a medal can be enormous in terms of marketing power,
even for those who don’t win, just entering gives wine producers the
opportunity to benchmark their wines and perhaps improve it. In this way the
RAST believes the Royal Hobart Wine Show is an important contributor to the
development of fine Australian wines.
Each year, the Wine Show attracts wine entries from all around Australia, with
judging undertaken by a panel of international, national and Tasmanian
experts.
The prestigious RAST Trophy - Best Pinot Noir sponsored by Etihad Airways
is the major prize and attracts pinot noir entries from all over Australia. The
winner of this prestigious trophy receives a return Coral economy class trip for

40 years of experience & history……..
The Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania traces its history back to 1821
when a group of residents of Van Diemans Land corresponded with the
Official Secretary and gained approval for the establishment of a Society for
the protection of animals. Tasmania has the distinction of being the first
colony in Australia to form an Agricultural Society when the “Van Diemans
Land Agricultural Society” was formed in Hobart Town on 1st January 1822.
The first show was conducted in January 1822, in the Old Market Place, just
in front of the present State Parliament House.
The first Royal Hobart Wine Show was held in conjunction with the Royal
Hobart Show 22 to 25 October 1974, entries totalled 382.
Since 1974 the Royal Hobart Wine Show has grown and entries have
increased to over 2,500 on average with a peak entry record of 3,254. The
Wine show now enlists international judges to join the panel of judges from all
over Australia. Just to mention a few, John Avery - UK, Clive Torr - South
Africa, John Belsham - NZ, Kent Tsiang - China, Emma Roberts - UK.
The Royal Hobart Wine Show is the only wine show in Australia with Certified
Quality Management accreditation ISO 9001 which is strictly adhered to and
audited each year.

The annual awards presentation dinner will be held on Friday 21 November 2014. The dinner will be
accompanied with wine selected from the 2013 trophy and gold medal wines. As the event is so
popular we encourage you to book early. This year, the dinner will celebrate our fortieth year. A very

All classes are open for competition to
vignerons, wine makers, distillers and wine and
spirit merchants.
A wine and spirit merchant shall mean any
person, association, or company, buying wine
and brandy for resale.
A wine maker shall mean any person or firm
manufacturing and selling wine from grapes.
A vigneron is any person or firm who grows
grapes for the production of wine for sale.
Fees for each entry will be - RAST Members
and Tasmanian Exhibitors $60.00, all others
$70.00.
All entries become the property of the Society.
Entries shall consist of SIX 750 ml bottles and
the minimum wine quantity specified must have
been bottled or will be bottled by the
commencement of judging on 15 November
2014. The entry number for half bottles is
double that for 750 ml bottles.
The qualifying stock volume of wine for each
class is 2250 litres for all entrants except for
Tasmanain entrants whose qualifying stock
volume is 225 litres for each class.
A further six bottles will be required in the event
that the entry wins a Gold Medal.
Entries will be awarded points (on the 20 point
scale) by the judges and aggregate trophy
points per Regulation 11 will be set out in the
list of awards. Certificates for Gold, Silver and
Bronze Medals will be issued to award winners.
Points for aggregate trophies will be allocated
according to the following scale:

The Tasmanian exhibitor accruing the highest
aggregate score receives the Most Successful
Tasmanian exhibitor award.
Entries must be made on forms supplied by the
Society for that purpose. Exhibitors must state
on the entry form the class to be competed for,
the name under which the wine is marketed,
vintage, the grape varieties contained therein,
their proportions, whether the wine is wooded
or not, the alcohol content and that the
stipulated quantity will be in stock at the time of
judging. (See also Regulation 14).
There is no restriction on the number of entries
in any one class, but no exhibit may be entered
more than once, regardless of class, even if
bottled under a different label and/or by a
different exhibitor. However, entries in Fortified
classes are restricted to only two entries by any
one entrant in any one class.

All bottles received by the RAST must carry
the identifying RAST Wine Show Label
provided, and must show:
a) the year of the competition;
b) the number of the class;
c) the year of the vintage;
d) the grape varieties and proportions
thereof;
e) the alcohol content.
Incorrect or incomplete information on the
entry form may result in the disqualification
of the entry.
No person, except for the RAST Staff and the
Chair or the nominee of the Wine Show
Committee, will be allowed to inspect an entry
form of any entry until the Judges' Awards
have been made public.
After the close of entries, no person will be
permitted access to bottles, except the Wine
Show Coordinators, Stewards and authorised
RAST staff, until the awards have been made.
In addition to the RAST Wine Show Label,
exhibitors must have their own commercial
label, or an accurate facsimile, on the bottle
with the RAST Wine Show Label placed on the
back of the bottle. Bottles not carrying the
RAST Wine Show Label will be excluded from
judging. The RAST label must be placed so
that on at least one bottle of the entry the
variety(ies), vintage, and vineyard name (if
applicable) on the commercial label(s) are
clearly visible.
BLEND & VARIETAL CLASSES. Wines
containing 85% or more of any single variety
must be entered into a varietal class unless the
blend is stated on the commercial label (or
facsimile) whereupon the wine must be entered
into the appropriate blended class. The
proportions of grape varieties in blended wines
MUST be specified on the entry form. Special
attention is drawn (by way of example) to
Shiraz and Viognier blends. If a wine is ≥ 85%
Shiraz and labelled Shiraz (only), then it must
be entered in Classes 24-27. If the wine is
labelled Shiraz/Viognier it must be entered in
Class 38 or 39.
INDIVIDUAL VINEYARD WINE. All entries
must be made from 100% of grapes grown on
an individual vineyard, the name of which
appears on the commercial (or accurate
facsimile) label of the wine. All entries in this
class must have a commercial label (or
accurate facsimile) on each bottle as well as
the RAST wine show label. It is insuffient to
say on the label that it is from an individual
vineyard, whilst not naming that vineyard.

TASMANIAN WINE ENTRIES:
To be eligible for a Tasmanian Wine Trophy
the wine must be made from ≥85% grapes
grown in Tasmania. The exhibitor must
certify this by ticking the box provided on
the entry form.
SPARKLING WINE. With the exception of
Class 41, entries must represent wine with
natural effervescence as a result of
fermentation.
OUT OF CLASS ENTRIES MAY BE
DISQUALIFIED AND NOT TRANSFERRED.
Entries must be delivered as follows:

in containers holding not more than one dozen
bottles, properly marked to show the exhibitor's
name and the class number(s).
All entries, except as otherwise provided for in
these rules, must be solely the product of
grapes and conform to the respective Acts of
States and the Commonwealth of Australia.
These include the Customs and Excise Act
and Regulations, Health Act and
Regulations, and the Australian Wine and
Brandy Corporation Act 1980.
In all classes, the wine stock as stated on the
entry form may be inspected and checked by a
representative of the Society or its nominee at
any time between the closing date for entries
and the completion of judging.
Inspection and/or testing of any award winning
wines may be made in the eight weeks
following the announcement of awards and the
Committee of the Society will later consider this
audit and take appropriate action if necessary.
No entry will be received from any person or
persons disqualified by this or any similar
Society during the period of such
disqualification. Should any such entry be
accepted, it shall, when discovered, be
deemed void and the entry fee and exhibit shall
be forfeited.
A judging panel shall consist of three judges.
All persons exhibiting shall accept the decision
of the judges appointed by the Society as to
the merit of the entries.
No protest with respect to process will be
entertained unless made within seven days of
the announcement of the awards.
The exhibitor must comply with the
Winemakers’ Federation of Australia Code of
Practice for the display of Awards.

Any competitor making misleading or other
improper use of awards won in the Royal
Hobart International Wine Show may be
disqualified from any future Show or Shows.
JUDGING CRITERIA
1.
Judges will judge each class and on receipt of all result sheets applicable to any one class, the Panel Chair shall have the
points totalled. He or she shall have the power to arbitrate the Awards.
2.
Judges will not have access to entries apart from the glasses placed in front of them by the Stewards.

Quality Objectives
The Royal Hobart International Wine Show aims to conduct an annual wine show that meets or exceeds our customers
expectations by incorporating the following objectives and using the listed performance criteria:

Conduct an annual wine show to judge quality in Australian wine styles.
Assessed by: Chairman of Judges’ and Judges’ satisfaction; survey results from entrants; number of nonconformances; wine press review/appraisal.

Provide leadership among wine shows both in the application of quality assurance standards to the conduct of wine
shows and in the judging of cool climate wines.
Assessed by: successful QA accreditation; one third of Judges experienced with cool climate wines; at least one third of
judging panel are Tasmanian judges; Chair of Judges and one other judge experienced in Pinot Noir.

Accommodate changes in industry products and provide direction for exhibitors by the annual review and
designation of classes.
Assessed by: provision of new classes; changes to rules; customer survey results.

Provide in-service training for Judges and Stewards.
Assessed by: Chair of Judges and panel chairs after completing the associate judge’ training period. Training of
stewards to be the responsibility of the chief steward and the chair of the Wine Show committee.

Maintain and constantly improve wine judging facilities.
Assessed by: improvements to cellar, judging rooms, lighting, glasses; better procedures for split classes and trophy
judging; ensuring that judges’ accommodation, food and social activities while attending the Show are of the highest
possible standard; absence of critical comment from judges.
