Scripture Readings for November 9, 2014
Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Ezekiel 47:1-2,8-9,12; Psalm 46:2-3,5-6,8-9
1 Corinthians 3:9c-11,16-17; John 2:13-22
My Dear Friends in Christ,
Today, we celebrate All Souls Day, which is officially the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. The fact that this celebration
takes the place of our regular Sunday celebration tells us how important
prayers for the dead are. One of the Spiritual Works of Mercy is praying
for the dead, and today, all of us do that. But in particular, this celebration is intended for us to pray for everyone who is in purgatory, because
our prayers will help them in their journey toward Heaven. Each of us
may pray for particular persons – family members or parishioners – but
our prayers can be applied to anyone who is in need of them. The reality is that we pray for everyone who has died, because we cannot know
whether they actually need our prayers or not. It becomes a wonderful
opportunity for us to pray for all the deceased who are in need of our
prayers.
But today is also a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the
meaning of death from a Christian perspective. Through Christ’s resurrection, death has been defeated. When someone dies, there is still
sadness, and we mourn the loss of people we love. But as St. Paul
wrote to the Thessalonians, we do not grieve as those with no hope.
Our faith tells us that one day we will be reunited with those we love, if
we only persevere in following God’s commandments. That’s why we
look forward to Jesus’ second coming – we look forward to the day
when there is no more death or suffering, but only joy in God’s presence.
And so, while we wait for Jesus’ return, we are called to be
busy doing his work. We are called to be people of faith who spread his
Good News throughout the world. In our society, there are still many
people who see death as something permanent, and who grieve with
no hope. We are called to help them to know what we know. We are
called to care for everyone, and part of that care requires us to pray.
Let’s all take the opportunity throughout the month of November to remember those who have died, whether at Church or at a cemetery. All
Souls Day isn’t just one of the great traditions in the Church, its an important part of our lives as Catholic Christians. Praying for the dead isn’t
just something nice to do, but its also one of our Christian duties
May God Bless Us and Keep Us,
Fr. Bryan

Knights of Columbus Raffle
It’s only a short time before we’ll be planning Christmas for family and
friends. It’s also a time to remember those who are less than fortunate
and will need assistance for their children’s Christmas gifts and dinner.
The Knights of Columbus are selling tickets offering chances to win
three prizes: 1st prize is $500, 2nd is $200, and 3rd is $100. It is not a
tremendous amount, but this will allow us to offer more to (hopefully)
two families for their Christmas. Please consider helping the Knights
with this special fundraiser by purchasing one or more books of tickets
You may buy one ticket for $1 or a book of 12 for $10. The drawing will
take place December 12th. Please see a representative for the Knights
of Columbus after all Masses. Please help to support this worthy cause.
