St. Paul’s Giant Book Sale
To Commence This Sunday
WESTFIELD — St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is gearing up for its 27th
Annual Giant Book Sale in the church’s
newly renovated Parish Hall. Sponsored by the Friends of Music at St.
Paul’s, the sale will run this Sunday,
November 2, noon to 5 p.m.; Monday,
November 3, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and
Tuesday, November 4, 9 a.m. to noon.
Tuesday will be Bag Day, when customers can purchase all they can put
into one grocery bag for $4.
The sale will feature thousands of
donated books in categories including hardback and paperback fiction,
history, biography, science and medicine, political science, psychology,
gardening, the arts, sports, pets, crafts,
how-to, self improvement, languages,
books for teens and a large selection
of children’s books, puzzles and
games. Also for sale will be low-cost
videos, software, CDs, records,
DVDs, oversized books and sheet
music. All sale proceeds are used to
fund the various musical programs at
St. Paul’s, to which the general public is always invited.
“The Friends of Music at St. Paul’s
wish to thank all book donors and
buyers who have made this annual
Giant Book Sale a success for the past
26 years,” said Charles Banks, director of music at St. Paul’s. “This year, as
always, our dedicated volunteers are
looking forward to meeting and greeting returning customers, and all new
customers will be welcomed as well.”
Donations for the sale currently
are being accepted and may be
dropped off daily through Saturday,
November 1. An outdoor pod unit is
available for book drop-offs in the
church parking lot; visitors should
use the Euclid Avenue driveway entrance. Weekday donations will be
accepted from 3 to 9 p.m. and all day
on Saturday. Donors are asked to
bag donations by category, if possible. St. Paul’s is unable to accept
donated textbooks, magazines, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books.
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is located at 414 East Broad Street,
Westfield, near Euclid Avenue and
across from the municipal building.

The bride-to-be is a 2002 graduate of Westfield High School, where
she was a dual-sport athlete and
captained the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams her senior year. She
graduated from The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Psychology. While at William &
Mary, Miss Lang was a member of
Phi Beta Phi Sorority and the varsity
lacrosse team, where she served as a
tri-captain her senior year. She received her Master of Science degree
in Sports Management from Virginia
Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.
Lt. Hutter is a 2001 graduate of
Osbourn Park High School in
Manassas, Va., where he was a member of the wrestling and lacrosse teams.
He graduated from the University of
Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. While attending UVA,
he was a part of the NROTC program
and an active member of Delta Kappa
Epsilon Fraternity, the Madison House
charity organization, and the University Judiciary Committee. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an
ensign in the U.S. Navy.
The pair met in Virginia Beach,
Va. while the future groom was stationed at Naval Air Station Oceana
as an F/A-18 Weapons System Officer at Strike Fighter Weapons
School Atlantic, and the future bride
was the Executive Director of the

Presbyterian Church to Hold
Theology Book Discussion
WESTFIELD — The Presbyterian
Church in Westfield has announced its
upcoming theology book discussion
sessions. Alan Smith, facilitator of the
Monday evening small group discussions, will continue to lead the group
in responding to published works of
regarded theologians. This year’s series will meet on the first and third
Mondays of the month, beginning
November 3, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., in
the church’s Parish House Library at
140 Mountain Avenue, Westfield.
“We typically read one chapter
for a session, and delve into the
meaning and implications for us as
Christians in the modern world,” Mr.
Smith explained.

Self-Help Book Group
To Begin on Monday
FANWOOD — A new self-help
book group discussion on personal
growth will begin at the Fanwood
Memorial Library on Monday, November 3, at 6 p.m., with “The Gifts of
Imperfection” by Brene Brown. The

Facilitated by Nathalie Concepcion,
a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and
a certified executive coach, this book
group will delve into the idea of growth
and living a more meaningful life.

SCOTCH PLAINS — New Yorkbased jazz pianist, composer and vocalist Deanna Witkowski will perform
a solo concert on Sunday, November
9, at 4 p.m., as part of the “Music for
the Soul” series at the Willow Grove
Presbyterian Church. The concert will
be free and open to the public.
Ms. Witkowski is well known both
for her work as an instrumental composer and as an innovator in bringing
together jazz and liturgy. She is a
frequent presenter on jazz and spirituality and currently serves as the interim minister of music at the Park
Avenue Christian Church in Manhattan. She was the winner of the Great
American Jazz Piano Competition in
2002 and has appeared on Marian
McPartland’s radio show “Piano Jazz.”
Her brand-new solo piano recording,
“Raindrop: Improvisations with
Chopin,” will be released on Saturday,
November 15, and will be available at
the Willow Grove performance.
On her newest recording Ms.
Witkowski marries Chopin works as
a solo pianist with Brazilian, jazz and
free improvisation. Her earlier recordings also illustrate her huge musical range. “From This Place” (2009:
Tilapia Records) features her liturgical jazz material in formats ranging
from three-voice a cappella to an
instrumental quartet. “Length of
Days” (2005), “Wide Open Window”
(2003) and “Having to Ask” (2000)
showcase her fusions of jazz, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban music.

refreshments and an opportunity to

Being Jewish in 21st Century
SCOTCH PLAINS – Area synagogues and Jewish organizations
will collaborate to sponsor a oneday program, “Why Be Jewish in
the 21st Century? Beginning the
Conversation,” on Sunday, November 16. It will take place at the
Jewish Community Center (JCC)
of Central New Jersey.
The day will be divided into two
sessions: a session from 9:30 a.m.
to 12:15 p.m. for parents and grandparents of children from infants
through age 15, and the other from
1 to 4 p.m. for parents and grandparents of older children, age 16
through adulthood. This participatory event is free and open to the
community. Pre-registration is
strongly suggested.
The program will feature remarks
from best-selling author Doron
Kornbluth, whose books include
“Why Be Jewish?” and “Raising
Kids to LOVE Being Jewish.” An
internationally renowned speaker,
Mr. Kornbluth makes presentations
in more than 50 cities annually to a
wide range of audiences.
The morning session, entitled
“Everything You Need to Empower
Your Children to Lead an Inspired
Jewish Life,” will focus on raising
children from infancy through

a children’s program will be available during the morning session.
The afternoon session will address “Beyond ‘JDate’… Talking

the third floor. New wall signs are proposed for the building.
