Illumination of Atrium, Building NN1
Novo Nordisk’s new corporate headquarters is comprised of two office buildings,
NN1 and NN2. Building NN1 houses offices, boardrooms, meeting facilities, breakout spaces, learning areas, a library, and a cafeteria. The building’s round form, the
spiralling inner staircase, and the dynamic balconies in the atrium have all been
inspired by the helix structures of an insulin molecule.
The architectural vision for the project entailed creating dynamic spatial settings, where
synergies of collaborative working are encouraged and supported; synergetic cooperations between employees from different professional fields, as well as between
employees and guests from all over the world.Based on the guiding architectural vision, as
well as on Novo Nordisk's functional and visual requirements, a lighting strategy has been
created. The strategy ensures a main concept for the lighting design and a hierarchy for
the varying lighting elements.
The overall lighting strategy necessitates accentuating: the building's iconic significance
and identity; movement and flow through the building; and the building's appearance and
functionality during the daytime, evening, and night time hours. This is achieved through a
varied lighting environment, where the orientation and movement are controlled by vertical
lighting, low placement of the lighting elements, and variations in lighting levels and
characteristics (for ex. direct and diffuse lighting, and colour temperatures). The strategy’s
prioritisation of lighting levels, location, placement and management moreover ensures
sustainable lighting.
