BREC, in partnership with the Library, will hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting for its Cyber Café building and plaza located at the Main Library at Goodwood. A free, family friendly fall festival will be part of the events 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, November 22 – the same day as the Attic Treasures & Collectibles Event being held at the Main Library and Independence Community Park. The ribboncutting ceremony will occur at 10:30 a.m. Music will be played by the Baton Rouge Jazz Ensemble and guitarist Dorothy LeBlanc, and activities for adults and children alike will include chess, art and crafts, cake walks and more. Library Holiday Closures Every branch of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, in observance of the Veteran’s Day holiday and Thursday, November 27, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. A Musical Tribute to Louisiana Veterans The Greenwell Springs Road Regional Branch is proud to host a musical tribute to Louisiana veterans this month to commemorate their outstanding service! Our guest speaker is Curtis Jeffery of the Wounded Warriors Project, and exhibits include Wounded Veterans, Veterans’ Affairs Suicide Prevention Team and Readjustment Counseling Center and more! The talented children and youth of Reed and Reed Consultants will perform, and relevant information and resources will be available for Veterans in the Baton Rouge area. In addition, there will be information booths with representatives from Disabled American Veterans, Wounded American Veterans, Baton Rouge and other regional VA Outpatient Clinic locations, clinical services (provided), pharmaceutical resources, Vet-Center locations and resources, My-heath-eVet signup/authentication, veteran’s benefits, disability/claims information and guidance, homeless veterans resources, and mental health resources. In addition, sexual trauma/drug rehabilitation/PTSD forums will be held to address veterans’ and public inquiries. East Baton Rouge Parish Library All Students Now Have Access to Library Cards Thanks to LSU Student There was a time when some young students could not sign up for a Library card, therefore have access to all the East Baton Rouge Parish Library’s (EBRPL) rich resources and books, because they had no transportation to the Library. That time has passed, thanks to the efforts of one Louisiana State University student, Kurt Ristroph. A student of LSU’s Chemical Engineering and Classical Civilizations, Ristroph worked with the LSU Honors College to create VOLUMEN, which stands for Volunteering Our Library’s Universal Materials for Educational Needs, Project. An Honors College soph omore, Ristroph saw a critical gap in how school children gain access to Library resources and Library Board President Tanya Freeman presented has found a way to bridge that Ristroph with a resolution for his program. gap. Through the VOLUMEN Project, the Library will be able to provide Library cards to children who would not otherwise have access to the vast array of digital resources available at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library. The plan is to make the project live in November with the issuance of special Library cards that will be added to the collections of local elementary, middle and high school libraries. Students than can check out the card from the school library and use it to gain access online to the EBRPL Digital Library for their personal use. The Digital Library (at www.ebrpl.com and open to all Library cardholders) has downloadable ebooks, DVDs and music; practice tests; reading games on TumbleBooks; homework help through tutor.com connections; Accelerated Reader book recommendations; math assistance; computer trainings; software downloads; and much more that is positive, free help for students who need it. Children also are invited to visit a local Library branch and use the free computers and free WiFi service. The East Baton Rouge Parish Library serves many children and teens who live in the area. In the last six months, for example, more than 10,938 children, 4,533 tweens and 3,155 teens used their Library cards online or at Library branches. This project has earned Ristroph a leadership award with the Ogden Leaders Selection Committee. The East Baton Rouge Library Board of Control also recognized him recently with a resolution. The Louisiana State University (LSU) Renewable Natural Resource Wetlands ecologist, Dr. Andy Nyman, and the LSU Aquaculture Research fish physiologist, Dr. Chris Green, will be at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch at 6 p.m. Thursday, November 20, to engage adult participants in an interactive presentation of their research. This research was conducted to get a better understanding of the toxic effects of oil spill dispersants on wetlands and to assist in the development of less toxic surfactants. Atchafalaya Dancers Bring Native American Traditions to Main Library To bring home the original feelings of Thanksgiving and share Native American culture with our children, the Atchafalaya Dancers will be performing traditional dances at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 8, at the Main Library at Goodwood. The free event is open to children ages 5 and up, but all those ages 9 and under should be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required. Ken Dixon and Regina Smith will lead the dance demonstrations. They are well known in Native American cultural circles down South as performers and experts at powwows stretching from Louisiana to Tennessee and Mississippi. The Genealogy Room will be packing up soon at the Bluebonnet Branch Library to move to its new home at the Main Library at Goodwood. Central Branch Exploring Dimensions of Art The Art League of Central is having a two member exhibit presented by Sheila Kelly and Derrel Robinson. Eden Park Branch Honoring Those Who Serve Veterans who have served in the Armed Forces will be honored in a photo display depicting their branch of service and any medals or stories they have to share. Greenwell Springs Road Regional Branch Poetry Antoine Mitchell will display his artwork in paintings with a reception 3-6 p.m. November 15.. Women Veterans of Louisiana Women veterans and those still considered active military personnel from all branches will have floor displays representing various Wars. Jones Creek Regional Branch Baton Rouge Scale Modelers Baton Rouge Scale Modelers will feature an exhibit of military models, vintage automobile models and more. Folk Art Wall Hangings Artist Judith Braggs displays her folk art wall hangings and quilts. River Center Branch The Great Harvest Gail Carter will exhibit her fall harvest items. Scotlandville Branch Handmade Image Dolls Carolyn Wells will display her collection of handmade Image Dolls. These dolls capture trends in dress, hair and shoe styles over the years. A Toast to Scotlandville This display will consist of art and writings by children ages 6-1 in the Scotlandville Community. A reception will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 16. Zachary Branch Calligraphy Calligraphy by Lynne Martin Branton will be on display. G I Joe Through the Years Raymond Guillaume will display his collection of vintage G I Joe Dolls. ZAG A display of local artists known as the Zachary Artists Guild will include their artwork.
