To all our visitors…
Bishop John R. Gaydos, the clergy and the faithful of the Diocese of Jefferson City welcome you and hope that your time in
our Mother Church may be an opportunity to share our faith
and joy in Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our parish was formed in 1959 and was elevated to the title of
Cathedral in 1968 and dedicated in 1974. Please enjoy the beauty of this spacious building dedicated to the Glory of God and
the memory of Saint Joseph, the Husband of Mary. It was built
for the inspiration of all who enter. Free tour booklets are available.
All visitors who are not of the Roman Catholic faith are most
welcome to join us in prayer and worship, but not to receive Holy Communion. Reception of Holy Communion is a sign of full
unity and membership in the Catholic community. Together let
us all pray for the unity of all believers.
If you desire to become a member of the Roman Catholic
Church or to become a member of the Cathedral Parish, please
call the parish office at 573-635-7991.
All contributions to the Cathedral ministries and maintenance
are sincerely appreciated. Please remember this Cathedral parish
in your Last Will and Testament to support our parish’s ongoing
mission.

All Souls’ Day

THE VERB
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
On this special weekend we join with the Church throughout
the world as we begin the month of November with two wonderful and important feasts. The first is the Solemnity of All
Saints, as we honor all the Holy men and women of every time
and place who are now happy in heaven. It is not the Church
who makes Saints, but it is God who makes Saints, and the
Church has the obligation to recognize the finger of God in the
lives of these Holy People. We have a special devotion to St.
Joseph, the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, after whom the
Cathedral, its school and rectory are titled. St. Joseph was the
man on earth who was closest to the Christ Child. May he help
us to always be close to Jesus as well! Each Altar in the Cathedral has relics of Saints. These relics are tiny bone chips that
remind us that in the Church of Rome, Mass was celebrated
over the graves of the Saints in the catacombs. The Main Altar
contains the relics of St. Clement, St. Irenaeus and St. Aurelius.
The side Chapel Altar holds the relics of St. Clement, St. Liberatus and St. Irenaeus. We also received from our former seminary for the Bishop’s Sacristy the relics of St. Peter, St. Paul and
St. John Vianney. If your family has some relics from older relatives that you no longer wish to possess, please consider donating them to your parish during this special month.
WELCOME to all who gather in our Cathedral Church for the
All Souls’ Day.
WEEK OF PRAYER: We ask each member of our Cathedral
parish to pray for the members of one of the parishes or missions in our diocese this week. As a Cathedral Church, all our
parishes are linked to us and we wish to deepen the spiritual
bond with them. Therefore, we will pray this week for St.
Andrew, Holts Summit.
CONGRATULATIONS to Paige Denkler and Bridget
Schneider, who were baptized in the Cathedral last weekend.
2014 CHRISTMAS BAZAAR
Our only parish fundraiser will be held next Sunday, November 9 from Noon until 6:00 p.m. in the undercroft. This annual turkey dinner, which was greatly improved last year, gives
everyone a chance to eat like a champion! Our goal this year
with the Bazaar and Grand Raffle is to fund the following three
projects.
♦

Central air conditioning for the top floor of the Parish
Office
Central air conditioning in the sanctuary of the Cathedral
Replacement of the central air computer system for the
entire Cathedral
All Souls’ Day this year occurs on a Sunday, and the somber
black vestments remind us that it is our duty as the living to
pray for those who have died. All Souls’ Day is a special day of
prayer for all those who have died and are completely forgotten
and unremembered. At death, a soul goes either to heaven, hell
or purgatory. The ones in heaven are safe and happy. The ones
in hell can never leave. The souls of purgatory can be prayed
out by our acts of charity, prayer and having Masses said. The
great Italian mystic St. Padre Pio remarked once that each soul
spends 100 years in purgatory as God counts a century. Therefore, take time each day to pray for the poor souls in purgatory.
It is also a good time to visit your local cemetery and pray at
the graves of your deceased family members and friends, introducing your family to this wonderful custom. It is also a good
time to make some funeral plans with your favorite funeral
home in advance. Don’t leave it for your children and friends.
For those who are looking ahead, our goal for 2015 will be the
replacement of the original windows of the Parish Office.
The following items were sponsored by the Parish Association
last year: Farewell receptions for the Carmelite Nuns as well as
for Mr. Carl Gales. Purchase of six silver Communion cups and
10 Communion pyxes for the sick and homebound. City food
inspection and deep cleaning of our commercial kitchen in the
undercroft. Three annual scholarships to Helias Catholic High
School in memory of Jim Weber, Bishop Marling and Bishop
McAuliffe. Our new six car concrete parking lot next to the
Parish Office, opening the spaces for parishioners. Holy cards
for Saint John XXIII and Saint John Paul II.
OUR NEW ACOLYTE
Volunteer to help! Kitchen and dining room help are especially needed. Sign up sheets are at the back of the Cathedral and at the Parish Office!
Recently we welcomed a new parishioner, Mr. Pat Coyne. He
held the ministry of Acolyte while serving in his former parish
in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. He will be ministering in the
Sacristies primarily at the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Masses. He was
instituted as an Acolyte by Bishop Edward Rice. Please make
Pat feel welcome as he shares this special ministry with us at
the Cathedral.
SILENT AUCTION/RAFFLE: Want to help make the Bazaar
a success? We are looking for silent auction/raffle items. If you
or your business has an item or service to donate, please contact
Bill Case at: cdcase@mediacombb.net.
SAINT BRIGID QUILTERS have made another beautiful
quilt for this year’s bazaar quilt raffle, a ‘scrappy quilt’ measuring 92 x 106 inches in size. It will be displayed in the back of
the Cathedral at all Masses this weekend, and quilt raffle tickets
will be available.
GROTTO STEPS
BAZAAR GRAND RAFFLE UPDATE
Keep selling your tickets for the Grand Raffle to be held at the
Christmas Bazaar on November 9. First prize is $5,000.00
second prize $500.00. If you need more tickets, they are available at the parish office. As a parish, we have sold 807 tickets.
That amounts to $8,070.00!

The wooden stairs from the undercroft parking lot to the statue
group of Our Lady of Fatima, after many years of faithful service, are no longer safe due to weather and age. It was suggested to replace them, but before we move further on this project,
Monsignor would like some input from the parishioners.
1. Should we keep them at the current location or is there a
better spot? 2. Should we think long term and replace the steps
with concrete steps and metal handrails?
Please email Msgr. Kurwicki at the parish office with your opinion at: stjosephb@catholicweb.com.

Cathedral. We will remember these souls in all the
Masses celebrated in our Cathedral during November.

Congratulations to these students
The donors hope you received and read the Catholic books donated by our parishioners at Christmas and Easter the past few
years. Our desire is to make this an annual Christmas & Easter
Cathedral tradition. To do this the donors need your support.
These books are not purchased by the Cathedral but by people
just like you, the people in the pews that have been inspired by
reading these books.
In your tithe envelope packet, you will notice there is an extra
envelope designated for Dynamic Catholic Book Give-a-way.
Any amount you can provide will be greatly appreciated so that
we may continue this well received tradition. Thank you!
Thank you to everyone who came to the Scholastic Book Fair
last week and supported our school. Thanks to your generosity
we were able to top our sales from our previous years. The profit from the book fair will come back to provide books, movies
and other necessary items for our classrooms and library. We
also want to thank the many volunteers who gave their time to
work at the book fair and help take down Thursday night. We
wouldn't be so successful without the parents and kids who help
us each year.
