In times of trouble, we turn to caring Christian friends to listen to us while we work
through our feelings. A Stephen Minister can become such a friend. If you or someone
you know could benefit from the trained, caring presence and listening ear of a Stephen
Minister, please call our Congregational Care Pastor, Dr. Hmingi Browne at 924-1323.

*Prayer of Confession (together)
God of mercy and grace, you have called us in simple words to honor
you by doing justice, loving kindness and walking humbly with you.
Yet we confess, O Lord, that we want to make our walk with you
reflect to our own credit. We are too often full of pride and short on
humility. Putting ourselves first, we hurt and neglect others. Forgive
us and redeem us for we ask it in Jesus’ name. Amen.
*Declaration of Pardon
Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel.
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
*Congregational response (together)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
*Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ Creed (together)
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day
he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on
the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come
to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the
resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

“Reflections from Micah”
Chancel Choir
With what shall I come before the Lord?
O what shall I give to my Savior?
What shall I offer to my God?
How shall I earn His favor?
Shall I offer to God the first fruits of my labor?
Shall I exalt Him with offerings of gold?
Shall I come with ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I please Him with things bought or sold?
With what shall I come before the Lord?
O what shall I bring to the King of kings?
O what shall I offer to my God, the Lord of everything?
You are Creator. You are the Giver.
What can I give You to honor Your name?
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to treasure mercy and love.
To walk humbly with your God.
So I come before God with humble thanks.
I bring Him praise and laud.
I lay before His throne of grace my heart, my life, my all.

STEWARDSHIP
Traditionally at this time of year, Church of the Palms
has conducted an annual stewardship campaign. As the
Generosity Team requested, the Session has approved
moving the 2015 Stewardship Campaign to the winter
quarter. This will allow us to reach more people with the
story of generosity. For those who would like to pledge now,
you may do so in one of two ways; you may use the website
http://www.churchofthepalms.org/pledge.html or use a 2015
pledge card now available in the back of the Sanctuary or in
the church office. We encourage you to consider increasing
your pledge for 2015.
Church of the Palms’ 3rd Quarter Financial Report and Budget Review are
available on the church website. Click on “Generosity” and then “Third Quarter
Budget Review” and “Third Quarter 2014 Financial Report”.
Communion Clean-up
After the Lord’s Supper is served, there are dishes to do, just like at home.
Disposable cups are used, but all of the communion ware must be washed and
dried. It takes 20 – 30 minutes after a service, but of course it will go much faster
if we have more helpers.Contact Yoko Spivey: yspivey@churchofthepalms.org,

Legacy Giving Corner
All of us are indebted to the past,
to those who preceded us. We drink
from wells we have not dug. We enjoy
liberties we have not won. We share faith
whose foundations we have not laid. At
the same time we are seeds of the future
for those who succeed us. We dream and
envision and set things in motion. We
are called to partner in faith with those who have gone
before us and to offer the best that we have to give to
those who will follow.

spotlight on
missions
Equipping Ministry
Church of the Palms welcomes each
individual attending one of its Sunday
services by stating in its Welcome
to Worship: Our mission and deep
commitment is: “Equipping Disciples
for the Service of Christ.” Our Pastors,
staff, and Session invite you to share
not only in our worship, but also in the
exciting opportunities that Church of
the Palms offers to learn, serve, and
grow in your faith.
Therefore, the Mission: Equipping disciples for the service of Christ means: We
connect people to Jesus Christ and one another, create opportunities for the Holy
Spirit to transform us into Christ-centered, Bible-based, Spirit-led followers, and
impact lives in our community and the world for Christ as God has gifted us.
What is “EQUIPPING”?
Equipping is training & preparing Jesus’ followers to
- know him through Scripture and
- follow him in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Scriptural Basis for Equipping
So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists,
the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of
service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach
unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and
become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of
Christ. -Ephesians 4:11-13

Church of the Palms
Who is to be EQUIPPED?
All of us!
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same
Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of
service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different
ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.
A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help
each other. -1 Corinthians 12:4-7

Support Our Troops
Veterans Day had its birth in 1954 when the national holiday,
Armistice Day, was redesignated. Armistice Day, recognized
the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when World War
I hostilities officially ceased. By 1954, two additional wars had occurred, World
War II and Korea. In remembrance of those who served in those conflicts and
those who served (and are serving) in conflicts since that time, Veterans Day is
now celebrated. Today you can remember those who served and continue to serve
our great country and show your Christian charity by packing and shipping one
or more morale support boxes to our troops serving in Afghanistan. Boxes with
complete instructions and addresses will be available following all services.
The Salvation Army -

schedule of events planned for the day. This is an event that you do not want to
miss and the best part about the Book Fair is that ECC will receive a percentage

included in this week’s bulletin may be used in-store and online. Presenting
the voucher at time of checkout will ensure Church of the Palms gets credit for
any sales made during the event. Through our church family and ECC families
participation last year, the program was able to purchase over $800.00 of new

running through Christmas Eve. We will also ring on
Saturdays ONLY from 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Macy’s

THINGS TO CONSIDER IN YOUR YEAR-END GIVING
•Supporting the ministry of Church of the Palms is like investing in a lifechanging diversified charitable portfolio. Think of all we do: educate children
and youth, feed the hungry, counsel the discouraged, tutor young students,
inspire worshippers through exceptional music, preach the message of good
news, support missionaries across the globe, and the list goes on.
•If you have highly appreciated stocks, instead of selling the stocks and
contributing the cash, contributing the stocks directly will usually provide for
a larger tax deduction. Consult with your financial planner on tax advantages
to your giving.
•Your generosity in these remaining weeks of the year will allow us to address
our severely underfunded capital reserve. We are blessed to have such fine
facilities and we must be prepared to care for them in the years ahead with a
hearty capital reserve.

about how your purchase will impact the lives of our students and
allow many to hear the gospel in Nicaragua. It’s a win for everyone.

God’s Story
Your Story
November 9, 2014
For the week of November 9, 2104
Devotion: Use this resource at home to guide your household’s daily
devotions. You can do this alone, as a couple, as a family; in the morning,
during the day, or at night. Find a routine that works best for you.
Pray: Light a candle and open your devotion time with a prayer.
God of mercy, you have transformed us by your promises of deliverance
time and time again. Teach us to do justice, and to love kindness, and to
walk humbly with you, God, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
Reflect: Reflect on the key verse from Sunday’s reading.
He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require
of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with
your God? Micah 6:8
Study: Study the reading and consider the background.
At the time of Micah, the kingdom of Israel was divided. Some lived in
the Northern Kingdom, Israel, with its capital of Samaria. Others lived
in the Southern Kingdom, Judah, with its capital of Jerusalem.
Micah spoke to Israel shortly before Samaria was conquered by
Assyria, which effectively ended the kingdom of Israel (the Northern
Kingdom). A few hundred years later, Babylon would conquer both
Assyria and Judah, putting God’s people in exile.
God’s promise through Micah proclaimed that out of Bethlehem in
Judah one would come to save the people from exile and ruin. Through
Micah’s words, God reminded the people that God did not desire burnt
offerings or sacrifices. Instead, God desired the people to live with
justice, kindness, and humility.

Read: Read the following daily readings to deepen your understanding of
Sunday’s text. After the reading, ask the follow-up questions.
Follow the book of Micah, as the prophet proclaims both judgment and
the promise of restoration.
Sunday, Micah 5:2-4; 6:6-8, Micah
Monday, Micah 1, Judgment and Doom
Tuesday, Micah 2, Social Evils Denounced
Wednesday, Micah 3, Wicked Rulers
Thursday, Micah 4, Peace and Promise
Friday, Micah 5:1, 5-15; 6:1-5, 9-16, God’s Challenge
Saturday, Micah 7, Prophecy of Restoration
What was God doing here? How were the people’s actions punished or
rewarded?
Connect:
Connect in conversation with others in your household. Discuss the
following questions, or simply check in with “Highs” and “Lows.”



What was a high point of your day? What was a low point?
How are the actions of your community/culture punished or
rewarded? How can you influence your community’s behaviors
so that they more closely match those God’s ways?
How do you act with justice, kindness, and humility? What can
you do this week to make improvements in those areas of your
life?
Do: By acting on what we learn, we make God’s word come alive. Do the
following activity this week.
Perform an act of justice, kindness, or humility for a stranger at least
once each day this week. Make a note of how your behavior shapes your
attitude.
Bless:
Close your devotion with a blessing.
God on high, inspire justice, kindness and humility in all who hear your
word this day. Amen.
