ITE 06/18/01 Press Release No. 14/14 ITE Collaborates with Industry to Set Up a Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) Assurance Centre MOU signed with four companies to enhance student and staff capability in HSEQ More companies are recognising the relevance and importance of health, safety, environment and quality (HSEQ) related policies, systems and processes to their businesses. Coupled with state legislation such as the Workplace Safety and Health Act 2006, the Fire Safety Act 1994, and the Environmental Protection and Management Act 1999, HSEQ is becoming crucial to businesses in achieving good quality products and services, delivered with high standards of safety and safeguard for environment. 2 Aligned with the Government’s direction and the growing importance of HSEQ, ITE will be setting up a HSEQ Centre for its Engineering students at ITE College West. It will be launched with strong support from Endress+Hauser (S.E.A) Pte Ltd, Hexcel Solutions Pte Ltd, Non-Destructive Testing Society Singapore, and Rotary Engineering Limited. 3 They signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ITE today to collaborate in training students in HSEQ. This is the first multi-party collaboration of its kind to develop HSEQ-ready manpower. A Win-Win Partnership 4 The five partners will play a key role in training students to have HSEQ skills to meet growing industry’s demands. Students and staff can learn from industry experts through industry attachments, transfer of knowledge and expertise, and organisation of forums and workshops. 1 5 A series of training programmes have been planned, such as, the Construction Safety Orientation Course (CSOC) incorporating Working At Height (WAH), Metalworking Safety Orientation Course (MSOC), Workplace Safety & Health (WSH) Management, and Environmental Management. Upon completion of a course, students will be issued with a pass that allows them to undergo internship or seek employment in the relevant industry. Sponsorship of Facilities, Materials and Equipment 6 To conduct these courses, the industry partners have sponsored key facilities and equipment to create an authentic learning environment. For example, the ITE-Rotary Engineering’s Working At Height Training Centre will conduct training for safety in the construction industry. Also, Hexcel Solutions will complement ITE's Fire Safety Programme with four dynamic, realistic, safe and environmentally-friendly fire simulators. This includes a 12-metre Mobile Fire Trainer (MFT) – the first-of-its-kind in the region. The realistic learning environment will facilitate fundamental understanding of HSEQ, and enable students to grasp skills easily. 7 E-Learning materials will also be made available to students to gain knowledge on HSEQ at their own time. Endress+Hauser has sponsored a suite of six e-learning courses that come with a Learning Management System for ITE students. 8 Also, ITE will be assisted by the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Society Singapore [NDTSS] to become an Authorised Qualifying Body offering training in NDT areas, such as Ultrasonic Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Penetrant Testing and Visual and Optical Testing. NDTSS will provide ITE with the training syllabus and list of training equipment, as reference materials to conduct training. 9 Mr Bruce Poh, Director & CEO, ITE, viewed that the setting up of an integrated Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Centre within ITE is timely. He shared, "These fields are critical to business success. Having a one-stop HSEQ Centre will value-add to students' learning and help them understand how these areas are intertwined to help organisations deliver high quality products and services. We are glad that four industry partners are committed towards supporting our efforts in developing HSEQ-trained manpower.” Media Contacts 10 The media is invited to publicise the contents of this release.
