Pastoral Care 2 Hospitals no longer notify churches of your admission. If you have not received a visit or phone call from the clergy within 24 hours of your hospitalization, it is likely we do not know you are in the hospital. Please help us minister to you by calling the church and letting us know. Today’s Music Liturgy We Live We are glad to welcome John Edwards to the organ bench today while Mr. Raab is away. . by Dr. Gil Haas Baptism by the early church was predominantly by submersion. However, the Didache (100-150 AD) states that if sufficient water is unavailable, then the baptismal water can be poured (affusion). Baptism of the sick by affusion was considered valid. Some early baptistries were large enough for submersion, but others were so shallow that baptismal candidates must have stood in them and had water poured over their heads. Both submersion and affusion are depicted in ancient artwork. Submersion is substantiated by the NT phrases, “in the Jordan” or “went down into the water”. Submersion also fits the metaphor that baptism is being “buried with Christ”. The Catholic Catechism states that triple immersion is the “most expressive mode of baptism”, but “from ancient times baptism can also be conferred by pouring the water three times over the candidate’s head”. Orthodox churches have always baptized infants by immersion. Martin Luther favored immersion as symbolizing the “drowning of sins”, but he did not insist on this practice. The 1549 BCP called for threefold immersion, but this was not required in the 1552 edition. Our BCP states that the officiant at baptism shall immerse or pour water while saying the Trinitarian formula. Requested by Mark Sessing Hymn Notes For all the saints - Hymnal 287 Based on the picture of a “cloud of witnesses“ (Hebrews 12:1), the hymn gives thanks for the saints of old, makes a prayer that we may be found faithful, and acknowledges the unity of the whole Church in heaven and on earth in the Mystical Body of Christ. Vaughan Williams’ magnificent marching tune makes this a contemporary version of “When the saints go marching in.” If you have a liturgical question or an inquiry about anything that transpires during or around our worship service, please forward the question you would like researched to: gghaas@aol.com, or drop the question in the offering basin. Please note whether we can credit you as the source of the question. 3 Ye blessed souls at rest, who ran this earthly race and now, from sin released, behold the Savior’s face, God’s praises sound, as in his sight with sweet delight ye do abound. Before the Service Please keep a moment of silence to prepare your hearts and minds for worship and if you so desire you may use the following prayer: Gracious Father, we pray for your holy catholic Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. Amen. Prelude Ye saints, who toil below, adore your heavenly King, and onward as ye go some joyful anthem sing; take what he gives and praise him still, through good or ill, who ever lives! Adagio, KV 356 (617a) Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart John L. Edwards, Guest Organist My soul, bear thou thy part, triumph in God above; and with a well tuned heart sing thou the songs of love! Let all thy days till life shall end, whate’er he send, be filled with praise. W [Please stand if you are able] Processional Hymn Hymnal 625, verses 1-4 Opening Acclamation Ye holy angels bright, who wait at God’s right hand, or through the realms of light fly at your Lord’s command, assist our song, for else the theme too high doth seem for mortal tongue. W Alleluia, Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia. There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God’s call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Father of all. 4 BCP 299 Collect for Purity Collect BCP 355 Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Hymn of Praise The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. BCP 245 Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. Hymnal 293, verses 1-3 I sing a song of the saints of God, patient and brave and true, who toiled and fought and lived and died for the Lord they loved and knew. And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, and one was a shepherdess on the green: they were all of them saints of God - and I mean, God helping, to be one too. Lesson [You may be seated] 1 John 3:1-3 A Reading from the First Epistle of John. They loved their Lord so dear, so dear, and his love made them strong; and they followed the right, for Jesus’ sake, the whole of their good lives long. And one was a soldier, and one was a priest, and one was slain by a fierce wild beast: and there’s not any reason - no, not the least, why I shouldn’t be one too. See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. They lived not only in ages past, there are hundreds of thousands still, the world is bright with the joyous saints who love to do Jesus’ will. You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea, in church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea, for the saints of God are just folk like me, and I mean to be one too. 5 [Please stand if you are able] Gospel Hymn “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Hymnal 524, verses 1-3 I love thy kingdom, Lord, the house of thine abode, the Church our blest Redeemer saved with his own precious blood. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Gospel Hymn For her my tears shall fall; for her my prayers ascend; to her my cares and toils be given, till toils and cares shall end. Hymnal 524, verses 4-5 Jesus, thou friend divine, our Savior and our King, thy hand from every snare and foe shall great deliverance bring. Beyond my highest joy I prize her heavenly ways, her sweet communion, solemn vows, her hymns of love and praise. Gospel Sure as thy truth shall last, to Zion shall be given the brightest glories earth can yield, and brighter bliss of heaven. [You may be seated after the sermon opening prayer] Matthew 5:1-12 W W W The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Sermon Knit Us Together When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [After the sermon there will be a moment of silence for private meditation] [Please stand if you are able] 6 Baptismal Covenant Let us renew our baptismal covenant. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God’s help. BCP 304 All praise and thanks to you, most merciful Father, for adopting us as your children, for incorporating us into your holy Church, and for making us worthy to share in the inheritance of the saints in light; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Prayers Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God’s help. W Give to the departed eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God’s help. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God’s help. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Intercessions are offered at this time Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will with God’s help. You may now offer your own prayers, either silently or out loud. Silence The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect. 7 Confession [Please stand if you are able] BCP 360 Peace Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. [You may stand or kneel if you are able] [Silence is kept] [You may share a greeting of peace with those near you] Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. [You may be seated] Welcome Stewardship Talk Offertory Sentence BCP 376 Psalm 96:8 Ascribe to the LORD the honor due his Name; bring offerings and come into his courts. Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Hymnal S129 [Please stand or kneel] Eucharistic Prayer A BCP 367 Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” Proper Preface BCP 380 For in the multitude of your saints you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with endurance the race that is set before us; and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that never fades away. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: 9 Fraction Anthem Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Hymnal S154 Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Invitation to Communion The Gifts of God for the People of God. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. [You may be seated] Communion of the People Reading of the Names of Departed Saints All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. May they rest in peace eternal. Post-Communion Prayer The Lord’s Prayer Let us pray. BCP 364 And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. BCP 365 [Please stand or kneel if you are able] Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 10 Blessing The Dismissal BCP 339 The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, W the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. Alleluia, Alleluia. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia.
