Milwaukee is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin and 22nd largest (by population) in the
United States. It is located approximately 90 miles north of Chicago, IL and about 80 miles east
of the Capitol in Madison, WI. Once known almost exclusively as a brewing and manufacturing
powerhouse, Milwaukee has taken steps in recent years to reshape its image. In the past decade,
major new additions to the city have included the Milwaukee Riverwalk, the Wisconsin Center,
Miller Park, an internationally renowned addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum, and Pier
Wisconsin, as well as major renovations to the Milwaukee Auditorium and Milwaukee Theatre.
In addition, many new skyscrapers, condos, lofts, and apartments have been constructed in
neighborhoods on and near the lakefront and riverbanks. Milwaukee and its suburbs offer a high
quality of life for many reasons. It's big enough to have urban amenities, yet it also presents a
small-town feeling in many well-established and proud neighborhoods. It is home to a diverse
community of people, and a great place to raise a family. The area is serviced by a community
based public school system, numerous top notch hospitals, health care facilities, and churches.
The city has natural beauty with a 14,759 acre county park system and a setting on the shore of
Lake Michigan. You're never too far from the countryside. Milwaukee is on the doorstep of
many Wisconsin inland lakes, streams, farms, and forests where skiing, hiking, swimming,
hunting, and fishing can keep you active year-round. Sailing, charter boating, biking, indoor and
outdoor ice skating, and golfing are among the many other available recreation opportunities.
Milwaukee is nationally recognized as the "City of Festivals". Festivals start in June with
Summerfest and continue through the summer as different ethnic groups host weekend events at
the lakefront. Milwaukee has a renowned public museum, excellent library facilities, numerous
radio and TV stations, a major daily newspaper, botanical gardens, and a zoo. For the art
enthusiast, the city boasts a world-class symphony orchestra, reparatory theater, opera and ballet
companies, and an outstanding art museum. For the sports fan, this is a major league sports
center. It's the home of baseball's Milwaukee Brewers, basketball's Milwaukee Bucks, hockey's
Milwaukee Admirals and soccer's Milwaukee Wave.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette University offer outstanding postsecondary education opportunities. In addition, there are 10 colleges, two technical schools, and
numerous specialty schools.
