HISTORY HUB Fall 2014 No. 11 Thank you El Paso for re-building downtown. As a former El Pasoan it gives me great pleasure seeing how it has been transformed and exhibiting all the wonderful history. We are working on the development of the Digital Wall! Here are the highlights: DIGIE, the Digital Information Gateway In El Paso, is our new mascot for the Digital Wall. The museum team is implementing DIGIE’s content and have already uploaded more than 4,000 digital images to the database. www.digie.org is the website created specifically for the DIGIE. Here you can upload your personal images and help us create El Paso’s identity. A new pavilion is being constructed right outside our front door to house DIGIE. A public art piece, as part of the 2012 Quality of Life Bond, will be part of the pavilion. The Grand Opening is scheduled for December 2014-January 2015. Please stay tuned for more information to come! As you know, 2014 celebrates the El Paso Museum of History’s 40th birthday. We will dedicate a special issue of this newsletter recognizing this occasion in December. In partnership with the El Paso Museum of History Foundation we are planning a Grand Re-opening of your Museum. We will showcase and share with you the museum’s greatest accomplishments. We sincerely hope your support and generosity will continue in the decades to come. We have exciting news to share with you. The Office of Honorable U.S. Congressman Beto O’Rourke has nominated the El Paso Museum of History for the National Medal for Museum Services. The nomination process takes time and the winners will be announced in the spring of 2015. Among more than 16,000 museums in United States, only five will be honored with this prestigious award. We are pleased to inform you that the El Paso Museum of History will be the premier location in the United States for the International traveling exhibition, Julius Caesar: Military Genius and Mighty Machines. We realize that many El Pasoans cannot travel to Rome to experience the ruins of the Roman Empire, so “we are bringing Rome to El Paso.” Please mark your calendars for September 20, 2014 for the exhibit reception. Thank you for your loyalty and continued support to your museum! Respectfully, Julia Bussinger, Phil.,Lic. Museum Director EPMH & EPMArch EPMH 3 Curator’s corner The Curatorial Team is pleased to announce that Jaime (pronounced “Jamie”) Knoedler has joined the museum as our Community Engagement Coordinator. Jaime will oversee all museum educational programming going on and off site. An important part of her duties will be developing teacher materials for the DIGIE, and arranging a touring schedule for our “Mini-Digie.” As fall approaches, the museum is making plans to disassemble the People of the Sun exhibit. Our last lecture on “Ysleta Mission of the Tigua Indians of Ysleta del Sur Pueblo: A Living Legacy,” was given by Tribal Anthropologist Nick Houser with comments by Tigua War Captain Javier Loera, and other members of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Tribal Council and Traditional Council. This event is an example of how so many of our projects Barbara Angus Senior Curator interconnect with other community organizations. The lecture is the last in a series on, The Missions of Spain in the Borderlands, funded by Humanities Texas which added depth to our fourth Wall of Giants, The Missions and Their People. The artwork on the invitations was by Frederick Carter who was featured in our exhibit, The Architecture of an Artist. The last History Hub focused on our Foundation’s fundraiser, Polo Real 2014. This issue introduces the exhibit, Julius Caesar: Military Genius & Mighty Machines. Our Foundation provides funding for exhibits such as this, so many thanks to the Foundation members. Roman Machines, as we call it in-house, is an interactive display with working models of machines used during the Roman Empire. It has travelled internationally (one set of exhibit catalogs is in English and Chinese with Portuguese subtitles), but El Paso will be its first venue in the United States. The models were made by the same Italian firm that brought us the Da Vinci exhibit we hosted several years ago. Visiting the exhibit should be an extra credit assignment for students being introduced to physics principals and to college architectural students required to read Vitruvius! We are also hosting a temporary exhibit, The U.S. in Polish Historiography and Periodicals from 1764 – 1919. The exhibit relates United States history as it was reported in contemporary Polish journals and newspapers. The panel exhibit was originally designed and displayed in Warsaw before being translated and shipped to a library near Chicago. El Paso’s General Casimir Pulaski Society made arrangements to bring the exhibit to El Paso. Its members are providing a series of lectures. The Warsaw Library’s wonderful collection of early periodicals, the raw material for this exhibit, was hidden by its librarians during WWII, thus avoiding a fire that gutted the building and destroyed many of the books. The DIGIE project continues to be the major focus for the curatorial staff. We are scanning photographs from the museum’s collections to add to what has been contributed by the El Paso Public Library, the El Paso County Historical Society, UTEP Special Collections Library, and the Magoffin Homestead. We are also busy tracking down photographs from El Paso that are held in university and library collections outside the region. DIGIE’s public website will have launched by the time this newsletter reaches you, so we urge you to contribute images yourselves and to pass the word on to your friends and the organizations to which you belong. The website address is www.digie.org. EPMH 4 development There are so many positive changes taking place in and around the museum. Construction of a new pavilion to house DIGIE is already underway (see artist rendering below). This 2,000 sq. ft. space will house the only digital wall of its type in the United States. The Pavilion will become the new front entrance to the museum. 400,000 people visited the original 3-D digital wall in Copenhagen, Denmark within its first six months of operation. We might experience these same visitor numbers. Can you imagine? The museum is currently looking for additional volunteers and docents to assist us when DIGIE opens within the next few months. We know that the Junior League will be helping us, but we could use your help too. Our new pavilion is going to be beautiful. It creates a perfect naming opportunity for an individual or business. Everyone is going to visit DIGIE. Jim Murphy Development Director When the pavilion is completed and DIGIE is open to the public, we will set our sights on our next major outdoor project; the illusive glass ballroom. Our Cinderella Room. We’ve moved our desired location to the back of the museum where our Garden Terrace now sits. But the Cinderella Room encompasses much more than this area. A full 3,000 sq. ft. to be exact. The museum needs a community gathering space. A ballroom, something grand. Now is the time. Join us won’t you? In other news, the museum would like to thank the Curlin family for their generous contribution to the museum’s foundation. Their support allowed the foundation to open the Curlin Family Conservation Fund that will last in perpetuity. Call me if you would like to contribute to this fund. We would also like to thank Mr. Frank Gorman and his family and friends for allowing us to host a private celebration marking Mr. Gorman’s 90th birthday. His accomplishments and his dedication toward the museum means a lot to all of us. Mr. Gorman was one of the key players in the 2000 bond election that allotted funds for the facility where we are now located. In other development news, a tremendous thank you goes out to Liz Uribe-Sinclair for her passion, dedication and hard work toward Polo Real 2014 this past May. What a wonderful accomplishment. It proves that months of legwork does pay off. Our hat also goes off to the Polo Real team consisting of Dede Rogers, Rita Baca, Ric Lara, Barbara Armendariz, Joe Gomez, Beate Burdett, Bernie Sargent and our foundation chairman, Christian Perez Giese. Polo Real 2014 was held at Dr. Zamudio’s Rancho Santa Maria Polo Club. And of course, our guests of honor, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Foster put the icing on the cake. Thousands of dollars were raised for the museum and its foundation. There were so many sponsors, in-kind contributions and volunteers, it was really amazing. The weather was perfect and best of all, it was sold out! Thank you Liz. Artist Rendering EPMH 5 Digie These are very exciting times for El Paso and I am delighted to be a part of the DIGIE experience. We have surpassed 4,000 images loaded into the system. Included in these images of El Pasoans is Anthony Quinn. Quinn was the first Mexican-American to win an Academy Award. Also recognized is Sandra Day O’Connor, born on March 26, 1930, in El Paso, Texas. She went on to become the first female justice in the United States Supreme Court in 1981. El Pasoan William Deane Hawkins was presented with the Medal of Honor for valorous and gallant conduct above and beyond the call of duty. He served as the Commanding Officer of the Scout Sniper Platoon attached to the Second Marine Division in action against the Japanese-held Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands Everett Thomas Curatorial Coordinator on November 20 and 21, 1943. Hometown giant Jake Erlich was born at a weight of less than four pounds. By the time he was ten years old, he was more than six feet tall. The locals nicknamed him “Pecos Bill.” Erlich lived much of his life in El Paso. He was a movie star featured in several silent films, an artist and author, and he also was a circus performer for several years. But Erlich was famous mainly for being taller than everyone else. In fact, he was once named the “Tallest Man in the World,” standing at 8’ 6” tall. Photographer Otis A. Aultman captured faces, feelings, and unforgettable moments in El Paso’s early 1900 era. Aultman immortalized border history, recording it through his camera. These are just a few of the individuals you will meet when you visit DIGIE. It is of great importance that you help us with your history. Feel free to visit www.digie.org and upload your favorite photos and video snippets to our growing history. The world will be accessing DIGIE. Let’s show them what makes El Paso special. Erlich Anthony Quinn Otis A. Aultman Sandra D. O’Connor William Deane Hawkins EPMH 6 Meet digie EPMH 7 Marketing Working for the El Paso Museum of History has been great fun and a wonderful experience. Managing the marketing and cultural events has been a pleasure for me. At the museum, we are committed to offering you the best learning experience regarding El Paso history as possible. Here you will find thousands of photos and artifacts that tell you a story. You may also learn about your family roots and will learn to understand the beauty of our city. We currently have six different exhibitions showcasing the history of UTEP, the influence of Poland in the history of the U.S., the history of El Segundo Barrio and Chihuahuita, local history and the Marilú Valenzuela Alemán Marketing Director changing pass, the history of our fire department, and for the first time in the United States: Julius Caesar: Military Genius & Mighty Machines which opens on September 21, 2014. General admission for the museum is free but for traveling exhibits like Julius Caesar: Military Genius & Mighty Machines there is an admission cost. This is the reason we encourage our visitors to become museum members so they can enjoy these exhibits for free. For any suggestions or questions about events please contact me at: alemanmg@elpasotexas.gov or 915-351-3588. From the back of the house These past summer months have been relatively calm regarding the installation of exhibits, that is with the exception of The U.S. in Polish Historiography and Periodicals from 1764-1919. The main challenge with this exhibit was arranging the installation in the given exhibit space while still leaving room for museum programs that occupy the same area. The Museum Operations team has kept busy with several minor projects and we have been preparing for the inspiring months ahead: We are disassembling the People of the Sun exhibit and completely redesigning the first floor while getting ready to install the Julius Caesar: Military Genius & Mighty Machines exhibit. We are going to have a unique entrance built exclusively for the exhibition and we are going to repaint the gallery walls. Also, the Up in Smoke exhibit will be downsized to make room for the Roman artifacts. So our first floor should look very different very soon. The construction project for fabricating and installing the Touch City 3D Digital Wall will be occupying our time for the next few months. We are going to assist the contractors in relocating the main entrance of the museum to the rear entrance of the facility during the time that the construction lasts. We have Museum Operations already received a portion of the electronic components for the Wall, so DIGIE, is becoming a reality. We are very excited to be part of this unique project. And, of course, we will diligently keep setting up for all of the classes, lectures, and other events the museum hosts so our visitors can truly enjoy the experience of visiting our museum and learning all that history has to offer. EPMH 8 education Hi! My name is Jaime Knoedler and I am pleased and excited to be chosen to be part of the El Paso Museum of History as the new Community Engagement Coordinator. I hail from Long Island, NY with a BA in Biology and an MA in Museum Professions with a dual concentration in education and registration. I have over ten years work experience in museums such as The Barnum Museum, The Southold Historical Society, The Science Museum of Long Island, and others in the realm of education. I am eager to jump on in and get the ball rolling. This is an exciting time for the museum with the exhibit, Julius Caesar: Military Genius & Mighty Machines coming at the end of September, and The TouchCity Jaime Knoedler Community Engagement 3-D Digital Wall breaking ground in December. As the Community Engagement Coordinator there are a lot of opportunities for Coordinator programming and partnerships. I am looking forward to working with this great group of people who are developing fantastic opportunities for our community. I am enthusiastic in becoming a member of the El Paso community and experiencing what it means to live in the Southwest. As an avid hiker and explorer I’m excited to trek through the Franklin Mountains and learn about the ecology and history of the Sun City and beyond. Please keep in mind that we are holding numerous education classes from belly dancing to Italian Language and Culture as well as Digital Photography along with lectures. Please visit, www.elpasotexas.gov/history/events.asp or our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/EPMuseumofHistory for more information. You may also contact me via email, knoedlerjm@elpasotexas.gov or by phone, 915-351-3588. I look forward to hearing from you! EPMH 9 Volunteer’s corner Since March 2014 I have volunteered for the El Paso Museum of History. Together with the team, I mainly work on the Digital Wall project. I select and collect the photographs we will use for the Digital Wall. I upload them onto the system and I research and add the information about the image, like the location, date it was taken, the neighborhood and its background story. I also upload pictures I have taken. Personally, as a German with an educational background in European history and culture, I enjoy learning about the history, buildings, people and stories of El Paso very much.. In particular, the mixture of nationalities, ethnicities, cultures and Lisa Heinemann languages throughout the centuries, which make El Paso a very special EPMH Volunteer place, fascinate me. I also take part in meetings and workshops in relation to the project and with our international partners. The atmosphere in the team is friendly and constructive so I am comfortable to bring forth my ideas and thoughts. Apart from the DIGIE project, I give tours through the museum, mainly for daycare and student groups. Bringing history closer to younger people is very important, which is why I think that the hands-on activities for children in the exhibits are very useful. They make the learning process easier and they remember the museum as a fun place. I also help out with the monthly Museum Happy Hour which is a great project and very interesting. I hope that we can host a German Happy Hour soon. I want to support the intercultural exchange which is promoted through this project. So far, working in the El Paso Museum of History is a lot of fun. The work is interesting, diverse and inspiring. Getting to know other people, projects and institutions in El Paso and around the world broadens my horizon in every regard. For everybody who is interested in working in the cultural field as I am, volunteering at the museum gives great insights into museum and cultural work, while being supported by a wonderful team. Thank you to the Junior League of El Paso volunteers for helping with Digie. Thank you to Emilie Lamb, Alyssa Chavira, Sara Vega, Patricia Siqueiros, Rachel Gonzalez, Lucy Ybarra, Alicia Angle, Stacey Nuñez and Cesar Nuñez for your help with Digie, events and different activities in the museum departments. If interested in applying to become a volunteer, please visit: www.elpasotexas.gov/history/ volunteer EPMH 10 Circle of giants It’s been a very exciting year for the Circle of Giants Community Group and the El Paso Museum of History. We still have a lot more to look forward to. First of all, we started the year with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the 5th Wall of Giants. The honoree is the University of Texas at El Paso and its Centennial Celebration. The evening was filled with fun and excitement as the UTEP Cheerleaders, the Golddiggers and the UTEP Alumni Pep Band performed for the crowd. Paydirt Pete and the Amigo Man added to the ambiance. It was one of the largest, if not the largest, crowds since we began celebrating and honoring the Giants of El Paso’s history. Rebecca Whitaker Circle of Giants Co-Chair Equally exciting and fun was Polo Real 2014 held on May 17, 2014 to benefit the El Paso Museum of History Foundation. The honorees for the evening were Mr. Paul L. and Mrs. Alejandra Foster. The evening included two exhibition matches, dinner, an auction, music and dancing, and much more. There was quite a response and support from the community for this momentous event. In addition to all of this year’s excitement, we rolled out the concept of an artfully designed glass structure which will house our DIGIE. The pavilion will showcase DIGIE in a high visibility area right across from the new Southwest University Baseball Stadium. This glass entrance and world class 3-D digital wall is targeted to open late this Fall. The 6th Wall of Giants was unveiled during our UTEP Centennial Celebration. It will be dedicated to Fort Bliss this coming Spring 2015. A Giant in itself and interwoven in the history of El Paso, Fort Bliss is home to the 1st Armored Division and home to thousands of soldiers and their families. This magnificent fort sits in the middle of our beautiful city and is comprised of approximately 1.12 million acres of land spanning across Texas and New Mexico, making it the largest U.S. military installation in the country. Established on March 8, 1854, Fort Bliss is a rich part of El Paso history and its community. Therefore, it is with great privilege that we honor Fort Bliss, our soldiers, their families, and its many contributions to El Paso and the surrounding area. Please join us in celebrating this 6th Wall of Giants as we prepare for the grand opening in the spring, 2015. David Saucedo Circle of Giants Co-Chair EPMH 11 Julius Caesar: military genius & mighty machines This exhibition is based on factual evidence, real life accounts, genuine artifacts, and historical scientific discoveries. The data was collected and published together for the first time in one impressive volume: MACHINA-TECNOLOGIA DELL’ANTICA ROMA, 2009, Palombi Editrice. A display based on this book was presented to the public in Rome from December 2009 to May 2010 at the Museo Della Civilta’ Romana. The Niccolai Group, Artisans of Florence International Pty. Ltd., were contributors , and the creators of the machines presented in this one-time display. Because of the success of this project, The Niccolai Group has produced the ultimate English version of their expanded international travelling exhibition. Through display panels, videos, 3D virtual reality reconstructions and iconic objects from important historical events, myths and legends, the exhibition sets the scenes of Ancient Rome. Guided through each section, the visitor is able to identify the historical moment illustrated with the help of time-lines. Among the artifact-replicas on display is a collection of rare copies of famous “volumen” and "codices" (books and scrolls) including: De Architectura Book X by Marcus Vitruvius Pollio De Bello Gallico by Gaius Julius Caesar The first known travel guide, The Tabula of Peutinger Theme I – Military Genius: In this section visitors will experience the Roman Military Machines at work during one of the greatest sieges before the start of the Common Era, and be introduced to a Roman leader who oversaw the end of the Republic and the birth of the Roman Empire. Theme II – All Roads Lead to Rome: In this section visitors discover inventive machines for measuring, for transportation, for communications, and the powerful propaganda tactics employed to spread Roman culture. Theme III – Building Rome: This section of the Exhibition contains the devices that contributed to the massive construction and industrialization of Rome, which may be considered the prelude to the industrial revolution. Theme IV – Entertainment and Lifestyle: For wealthy Romans life was good. They enjoyed an extravagant lifestyle with luxurious furnishings, surrounded by slaves and servants. Poorer Romans, however, could only dream of such lifestyle but could still relax and be entertained by popular sporting activities such as Gladiators fighting for their lives or chariot racing. Charity and love are the same -- with charity you give love, so don't just give money but reach out your hand instead.” ― Mother Teresa “We only have what we give.” ― Isabel Allende Kids’ corner EPMH 23 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED Nonprofit Org.
