Careers in Accountancy
Working as an Accounting Technician
Accounting Technicians are qualified accounting professionals that work at all
levels of finance. They can work in every type of organisation and are widely
employed throughout the public sector, industry and commerce and in private
accountancy practices.
They are involved in the day-to-day practical work of accountancy and play a
key operational role in producing reliable financial information. Accounting
Technicians can perform a wide range of finance roles, from accounts staff to
financial controller and beyond. For instance, they can do financial accounting and
budgeting, costing and credit control, payroll administration and tax returns. More
experienced Accounting Technicians may often perform senior managerial tasks
and audits.
Accounting Technicians can work on their own or alongside professional
accountants. In a small company, they may be the only qualified employee looking
after the finance function, while in a larger company, they may be working as
part of a team alongside accountants and administrative staff. While they are not
accountants, they can perform many of the same functions and are qualified to take
accounts beyond trial balance stage, as well as prepare full financial accounts.
Career prospects for Accounting Technicians
Accounting Technicians enjoy excellent career prospects and there is always a
strong demand for their skills in the marketplace. Results from our most recent
member survey show that almost 95% of our members are employed.
They can work in a wide variety of finance roles for many types of organisations,
including manufacturing companies, local and central government, the health
service, banks and insurance companies and private accountancy firms. Selfemployment is also a possibility for qualified technicians.
In addition, many who qualify as Accounting Technicians go on to continue their
studies, and use the qualification as a stepping stone to eventually become full
professional accountants.

The jobs market
Careers in accounting and finance can be very
rewarding and those with lots of experience often
receive very high salaries. Studies show that
many accounting graduates often end up in senior
management positions.
There is a great variety of work within the accounting
profession with a vast array of career opportunities to
suit all interests. This includes auditing and assurance
work, consulting, corporate finance, tax planning,
and insolvency. Despite the challenging economy, the
overall jobs market for accounting and finance in Ireland
remains very positive.
The National Skills Bulletin 2013, a study produced by
the Skills and Market Research unit of SOLAS for the
Expert Group on Future Skills Needs in the Republic of
Ireland, identified accounting and finance as a sector
where there are skills shortages.
8
Student Prospectus
There are over 100,000 people employed in a range
of accounting and finance professions (making up
almost 6% of the ROI’s workforce) and the report
highlighted skills shortages in the areas of risk,
regulatory compliance, accounting, solvency, financial
management, multilingual technicians, fraud, and credit
control. The demand for accounting is also strong in
Northern Ireland. According to the UK Commission’s
Employer Skills Survey 2011: Northern Ireland, “In the
next decade it is predicted that over half of net new jobs
will be in accounting and audit activities (2,400), one
quarter in financial intermediation (1,200) and one sixth
in auxiliary financial employment (800).
International financial services remain a burgeoning
development sector in the island of Ireland with a
continued and strong need for accounting technician
and professional accounting skills. The average annual
growth of employment among Accounting and Financial
Technicians was 17.9% in 2010-11. This was one of the
highest growth rates among all the business and financial
occupations.
“It’s an excellent course as it gave me a superb
grounding in accounting, tax and law. This meant
that as I advanced within the company, I had a
good knowledge of all the key areas.”
Ivor Gleeson
CEO, Central
Applications Office

they obtain 50% or higher. There are 15 exam centres nationally for students to choose from.

Online Tuition – New for 2014
We are delighted to announce the launch of our new
Online programme beginning this September 2014
for both new and continuing students in the Republic
of Ireland.
This 35 week part-time programme offers you
the chance to achieve a professional qualification,
without the need to leave home. Online students
registered with us are provided with course materials
for each module they undertake and also access to
the vast array of online resource materials. For each
module you undertake, you are allocated an online
tutor. Online students receive support in a number of
different ways:
• ‘Live’ orientation session at the beginning of
the first term
• Dedicated tutor support
• Online tutorial support via a virtual learning
environment called Moodle where students
can ask their tutors a question at any time;
The programme provides a supportive online
learning environment. As an online student you will
need to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages
to this type of learning. e.g. you can study at your
own pace, and you can combine study with domestic
and work commitments, on the other hand you need
to be very disciplined and allocate appropriate time
for your studies and there is very little ‘live’ social
contact.
Online study suits students whose personal
commitments mean they don’t have time to attend
classes or lectures. Often students live too far or don’t
have transport to get to classes or lectures and an
online programmes provides new opportunities to
access qualifications.
For further information contact Gosia Lakoma,
Online Programme Manager on 01 6498180 or email
glakoma@accountingtechniciansireland.ie
• Weekly recorded online lectures and notes;
• Three classroom based tutorials during the year;
• Regular online assessment and mock exams
“I am now a huge fan of online learning, not just the
recorded lectures, but the Moodle format with forums,
tutor contact and information repository. It made
returning to study after 20 years as painless as possible
and the overall support from ATI has been brilliant.”
Sophie Hayley

Financial Assistance
Republic of Ireland
The student grant is the main source of financial help
available in the Republic of Ireland for students in fulltime courses. For eligible students, the grant is there to
help with the various costs of participating in further
or higher education.
Northern Ireland
Students in Northern Ireland can access information
on www.studentfinanceni.co.uk which will outline
the various funding options. Please note that our QCF
approval as a Level 5 Diploma means the qualification
is classified as a Higher Education course.
Students on part-time, access or foundation courses (in
higher education institutions) and short courses are
not eligible to apply for a student grant. If you think
you are eligible for the student grant, you should apply
for it as soon as possible. Full details are available on
www.grantsonline.ie.
As such, if you are studying part-time, you will be
able to apply for a grant towards your fees and course
costs from your local Student Finance NI office. There
are a broad range of grants, loans and government
sponsored schemes available so NI students are
best advised to research those which best suit their
individual circumstances.
ROI students who are unemployed or in receipt of
social welfare can also apply for various schemes
which let you return to study and keep your benefits.
These include the Back To Education Allowance
(BTEA) and the Vocational Training Opportunities
Scheme (VTOS ). There is also the option to study the
qualification through a fully funded programme at one
of our Approved Partner Training Centres around the
country or online via eCollege.
Employers
Many of our students are already in the workplace and
a large number receive financial support from their
employers to sit our exams. Many employers will offer
help to pay for tuition and professional fees and also
allow staff time off to study and take exams.
If you have applied or been approved for funding
of any type, please contact us directly in advance
of registration on (0)1 649 8180 for further
information.

progress from affiliate to full membership after a few months. Others who have no previous
experience might remain an affiliate member for a few years, in particular if they choose to
work part-time.

28 Student Prospectus
Work Experience
In addition to passing our exams, you must also obtain two years relevant work
experience to be awarded the Diploma for Accounting Technicians and progress from
affiliate to full membership
Work experience ensures you build the “on-the-job” skills required to be effective as a qualified accounting
technician and apply the theory you learn in the classroom to a practical setting. Any relevant experience from
a previous job can be counted towards your two years experience. Accounting Technicians Ireland will also
recognise any relevant experience obtained while you are studying or after you have completed your exams.
Your work experience needs to be signed off by a mentor who can verify that you have achieved the required
work experience learning outcomes overleaf To complete the work experience requirements you will need to:
• Find a workplace mentor (this could be your line manager, employer or a qualified accountant)
• Gain two years experience in an accounting or finance-related role
• Record your progress using the Record of Work Experience form and have this verified by your mentor
• Submit your Record of Work Experience to Accounting Technicians Ireland on successful completion of
the two year academic programme.
Work Experience Learning Outcomes
Accounting Technicians Ireland has a flexible approach in reviewing the precise experience that students need
to gain, given the wide variety of Accounting Technician roles. Students must complete 9 different work based
assessments. The core compulsory modules are as follows:
• Essential Accounting Skills
• Advanced Accounting Skills
• Personal Development for Accounting Technicians
• Using Information Technology
• Maintaining Accounting Systems
• Maintaining Statutory Compliance
Your mentor will be able to help you plan your work experience effectively, and Accounting Technicians Ireland
will be able to assist with any queries you may have.
29
How To Get Work Experience
If you are not already working, work experience
can be gained in any number of ways. For example
through placements, part-time jobs, voluntary work,
internships, or job shadowing. These allow you to
gain experience and skills in a particular field or
industry with a view to working in that industry in
the long term.
Make sure you cast a wide net when searching for
work as you will need to follow a process similar to
that of finding any other job; e.g. job boards, local
companies, recruitment agencies, career services,
networking and exhibitions. Here is some advice on
where to start in your job search.
• Make use of all your contacts. Speak to friends,
family, colleagues, classmates and let them
know you are looking for some accounts
related work.
• If you know someone who runs their own
business, volunteer to help them with their
accounts.
• Ask your current employer about working
in the accounts department (perhaps one
afternoon per week). If your organisation has
an external accountant ask them about possible
work placements.
• Use social networking sites such as Facebook or
Linkedin to increase your profile.
• Attend industry events and sign up for any
accountancy newsletters seeking out any
opportunities that may arise.
• Use all relevant media sources - newspapers,
industry publications, recruitment websites,
professional bodies, education providers,
company websites.
