Please help us minister to you by calling the church and letting us know. Today’s Music Liturgy We Live Today’s organ prelude and postlude are based on the great hymn “Sleepers wake! a voice astounds us” (No. 61 in our Hymnal). The prelude is by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) who made this transcription for organ solo with music from Cantata 140. The postlude, by Paul Manz, treats the tune as a dialog between the big Tuba stop of the organ and the rest of the organ. Manz (1919-1009) served the Lutheran church as recitalist, composer, teacher and leader in worship. He was Cantor Emeritus at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saint Luke, Chicago, Illinois; as well as Cantor Emeritus of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was the director of the newly established Paul Manz Institute of Church Music, and was Professor Emeritus of Church Music at Christ Seminary Seminex at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. by Dr. Gil Haas Some dioceses within the Anglican communion can be very large while others are quite small. The Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf covers several countries, while the Diocese of Sodor and Man covers just the Isle of Man (221 square miles). Some populous dioceses are divided into areas with each assigned to a suffragan bishop who remain suffragans until the appointing bishop retires. For example, the Bishop of Toronto has suffragans assisting him in four geographical divisions. Another alternative is for a bishop to appoint an assisting coadjutor bishop who will become the diocesan bishop on the bishop’s retirement. In some parts of the Anglican communion, archdeacons are named to assist the bishop in administrative functions, and they are the most senior clergy in that diocese. In the Episcopal Church, the senior priest of a cathedral is called the dean. Before 2000, some persons who held this position were called provosts. Deans are assisted by canons or, formerly, prebendaries. In the Scottish Episcopal Church, the senior priest of a cathedral is called provost. In the Anglican Church of Canada, a cathedral’s senior priest is known as the rector of the cathedral and dean of the diocese. The Parish Choir sings an engaging anthem by Gordon Young, “Now let us all praise God and sing.” The music is in classic ABA design, that is, similar outer sections with a contrasting inner section. Hymn Notes Before the Service Rejoice! rejoice, believers - Hymnal 68 Laurenti, considered one of the finest of pietistic hymn writers, wrote a set of texts and tunes for the entire church year. This hymn, based on Matthew 25:1-13 (the story of the wise and foolish virgins) was intended for a Sunday in Trinity season, but it usually is included in the Advent section. It is a call for us to be prepared to meet the Bridegroom (Jesus) whose coming is imminent. Please keep a moment of silence to prepare your hearts and minds for worship and if you so desire you may use the following prayer: Gracious Father, we pray for your holy catholic Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. Amen. Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates - Hymnal 436 This is a famous paraphrase of Psalm 24, and reveals a spirit of praise and hope unexpected from the depths of the dreadful Thirty Years’ War. Its theme is the preparation for the Messiah’s coming. Prelude 3 IWachet auf! ruft uns die Stimme (Sleepers, wake! a voice astounds us) J.S. Bach Collect for Purity W BCP 355 Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. [Please stand if you are able] Processional Hymn Hymnal 68, verses 1-3 Rejoice! rejoice, believers, and let your lights appear! The evening is advancing, and darker night is near. The Bridegroom is arising, and soon he will draw nigh; up, watch in expectation! at midnight comes the cry. Hymn of Praise Hymnal 620, verses 1-5 Jerusalem, my happy home, when shall I come to thee? When shall my sorrows have an end? Thy joys when shall I see? See that your lamps are burning, replenish them with oil; look now for your salvation, the end of sin and toil. The marriage feast is waiting, the gates wide open stand; rise up, ye heirs of glory, the Bridegroom is at hand! Thy saints are crowned with glory great; they see God face to face; they triumph still, they still rejoice in that most happy place. There David stands with harp in hand as master of the choir: ten thousand times would one be blest who might this music hear. Our hope and expectation, O Jesus, now appear; arise, thou Sun so longed for, above this darkened sphere! With hearts and hands uplifted, we plead, O Lord, to see the day of earth’s redemption, and ever be with thee! Our Lady sings Magnificat with tune surpassing sweet, and blessed martyrs’ harmony doth ring in every street. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, God grant that I may see thine endless joy, and of the same partaker ever be! Opening Acclamation BCP 355 Hymnal S77 W Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen. 4 Collect The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.” But Joshua said to the people, “You cannot serve the LORD; for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume you, after having done you good.” And the people said to Joshua, “No, we will serve the LORD!” Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.” The people said to Joshua, “The LORD our God we will serve, and him we will obey.” So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem. BCP 236 O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Lesson [You may be seated] Joshua 24:1-3a, 14-25 A Reading from the Book of Joshua. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Long ago your ancestors-Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor-- lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods. Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan and made his offspring many. “Now therefore revere the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River, and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. Now if you are unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods; for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; and the LORD drove out Hymn [Please stand if you are able] Hymnal 596, verses 1-3 Judge eternal, throned in splendor, Lord of lords and King of kings, with thy living fire of judgment purge this land of bitter things; solace all its wide dominion with the healing of thy wings. Still the weary folk are pining for the hour that brings release, and the city’s crowded clangor cries aloud for sin to cease; and the homesteads and the woodlands plead in silence for their peace. 5 Crown, O God, thine own endeavor; cleave our darkness with thy sword; feed all those who do not know thee with the richness of thy word; cleanse the body of this nation through the glory of the Lord. Lesson Gospel [You may be seated] Matthew 25:1-13 W W W The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 A Reading from the First Epistle to the Thessalonians. We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words. Jesus said, “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, `Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, `Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise replied, `No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, `Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he replied, `Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. [Please stand if you are able] Gospel Hymn The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Hymnal 524, verses 1-3 I love thy kingdom, Lord, the house of thine abode, the Church our blest Redeemer saved with his own precious blood. Gospel Hymn Hymnal 524, verses 4-5 Jesus, thou friend divine, our Savior and our King, thy hand from every snare and foe shall great deliverance bring. For her my tears shall fall; for her my prayers ascend; to her my cares and toils be given, till toils and cares shall end. Sure as thy truth shall last, to Zion shall be given the brightest glories earth can yield, and brighter bliss of heaven. Beyond my highest joy I prize her heavenly ways, her sweet communion, solemn vows, her hymns of love and praise. 6 [You may be seated after the sermon opening prayer] We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. W We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Sermon Two Messiahs [After the sermon there will be a moment of silence for private meditation] [Please stand if you are able] Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. Prayers BCP 358 Let us pray for the church and the world. In the Lord I’ll be ever thankful, in the Lord I will rejoice! Look to God, do not be afraid. Lift up your voices, the Lord is near; Lift up your voices, the Lord is near. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name, may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world; especially for Justin of Canterbury; Katharine, our Presiding Bishop; Edward, our Bishop; and the clergy and people of the diocese of Oklahoma and our companion diocese of Uruguay. Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good; especially for Barack, our President; Mary, our Governor; and Mick, our Mayor. Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit. [Intercessions are offered at this time] 7 And we pray that we may share with all your saints, in the joy of your Eternal Kingdom. Peace In the Lord I’ll be ever thankful, in the Lord I will rejoice! Look to God, do not be afraid. Lift up your voices, the Lord is near; Lift up your voices, the Lord is near. Confession [Please stand if you are able] The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. [You may share a greeting of peace with those near you] BCP 360 Welcome Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. [You may be seated] Stewardship Talk [You may stand or kneel if you are able] Offertory Sentence [Silence is kept] BCP 376 Psalm 96:8 Ascribe to the LORD the honor due his Name; bring offerings and come into his courts. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Offertory Text and Music: Gordon Young Now let us all praise God and sing Our great Redeemer’s praise. That we may all with one accord Our joyful voices raise. Sing Alleluia! We are called to serve… …all people selflessly - those in greatest need and all God has made. Proper Preface BCP 377 For you are the source of light and life, you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. We are called to connect… …deeply - to God and other by participating in the Sacraments, engaging in relationships, and belonging to a community of fellow disciples. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Help us, O Lord… …to be more prayerful …to worship with joy and thanksgiving …to plan more intentionally …to share for Your purposes. Bless, O Lord, our pledges, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. [Please stand or kneel] Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. 9 The Lord’s Prayer He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. BCP 364 And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Fraction Anthem Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Hymnal S154 Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Invitation to Communion The Gifts of God for the People of God. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. [You may be seated] Communion of the People All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. 10 Communion Music Post-Communion Prayer Hymnal 324, verses 1-4 Let us pray. Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly minded, for with blessing in his hand Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand. BCP 365 [Please stand or kneel if you are able] Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords in human vesture, in the Body and the Blood he will give to all the faithful his own self for heavenly food. Blessing Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of Light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. BCP 339 The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, W the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.
