LAUREN DAVIS SELECTED WORKS MY NARRATIVE This body of work from 2012-2014 is some of the most special to me because it represents a period of transformation, letting go and letting the process guide me; rather than my own expectations. For so long I’ve tried to control so many aspects of my life and this restraint definitely showed within my art. Being born with a condition called microphthalmia, it causes me to be blind in my right eye. I believe that my need for order is definitely a result of coping with this, which is so widly out of my control. During this period through experiments with color, texture, printmaking, collage and pattern; I began to see what happens when you let go. When I began to let go I was able to see just how mysterious and fascinating my work and the world can be. ETCHING ON PAPER, EDITION 2/10 EXPERIMENT Experimenting for me allowed me to try new things without any judgement. Without judgement from others and most importantly myself. When I was first introduced to natural dyeing I became enamored by it; but, I wanted to take it a step further. A lot of my work includes elements of food; but, in a much more unconvential way from smearing to burning and so forth. The color combinations, shapes and textures I get from these methods are so intriguing to me. Introducing themes such as anatomy and nature with methods such as printmaking I wanted to see where this experimentation with food could lead me. RASPBERRIES & BANANAS ON PAPER SCREENPRINTS ON PAPER, UNIQUE EDITIONS PROCESS Exploring and letting go through process go hand in hand. If theres anything I’ve learned in my journey it is to embrace and love the process. The end result is not nearly as exciting as the process it took to get there. Documenting and being transparent and showing how the end result is created with my work has become fundamental. It tells a story that is otherwise hard to explain. SHARPIE ON MYLAR OATMEAL, BANANA, HONEY ON PAPER DIGITZED REPEAT PATTERN TAKEN FROM SAMPLE RE-COLORED VERSION OF REPEAT PATTERN MIXED MEDIA SCREENPRINTS ON PAPER COLOR With color is where visions truly emerge and ideas start to take shape and are given life. Manually through CMYK screenprinting this process has allowed me to really explore and have a thorough and hands on understanding of color mixing. The endless possibilities with color are fascinating in that they require both intuition; but also, an equal amount of technical skill. ACRYLIC PAINT ON COTTON CMYK SCREENPRINTS ON PAPER, UNIQUE EDITIONS HANDMADE AND HAND SCREENPRINTED CALF LEATHER TOTE INSPIRATION My inspirations are always changing, growing and evolving. However, specifically for this body of work during this time, the body and its forms inside and out were particularly fascinating to me. Maybe it’s because of my own physical limitations I became intrigued with the body; but nevertheless I feel elements of anatomy, nature and their perfect imperfectness find their way directly or inadvertently within much of my work. DIGITAL COLLAGE DIGITAL COLLAGES PATTERN Combining the elements of experimentation, color and trusting my process I came to pattern. Patterns are my resolve, they are the end result to the madness and the mess. It’s where things begin to make more sense. Moving into pattern was a way for me to seize back some of the control that was lost in the process of making and experimenting. Most of these patterns come from a tactile study which was then altered by playing with scale and contrasts in color. Her work is most fertile within its process stage. She has a completely unique approach to the development of prints; the strength and vital part of Lauren’s work is within its physical and material explorations. Lauren uses a diversity of methods and new media to arrive at powerful forms of artistic expression. For her, the process is as, if not more important, than the end result. Her spontaneity and playfulness leads to unexpected results and has propelled her artistry and aesthetic sensibility into a territory, which is extremely fertile.”- Pascale Gatzen All content © 2014 by Lauren Davis | laurendavis417@gmail.com | 314-359-3775 | lrndvs.com
